@lisamjfan92- It would be easy to speculate that a heavy cigarette consumption over the years, might have contributed to Brian ruining his voice. Just hearsay on my part, of course. The great thing is that he has overcome his demons! Being new to BBs . I suggest, along with their well known music (1962-66 era), listen to some of their less known, but wonderful songs from 1967 to '73) Thanks to this medium, I've been able to discover some beautiful gems from this period.
When I hear pieces like this, written and sung by Brian Wilson, different thoughts come to mind. It's a darned shame that within a few years, he ruined his beautiful falsetto voice. Compare this to "Love You" album (I do like it in its own way, but not the same magic as this piece.). It's gratifying and inspiring that Brian is really "back" for good, seems happier, albeit a little battered from his life's struggles, and continues to enchant with his concerts and music.
The 1st time I heard this, I was in tears. Never had I heard such heartbreak, & yet, hope, in a song. Mike's exquisite lyrics, with Brian's musical genius, created a Masterpiece, for all-time. They were both just 20 y/o--Fall of '63, when they did this. Wolfsky9
Beach boy songs make you fell young forever; kissing your love on the beach, feeling their warm, tan body; sitting on the sand, feeling the breeze, watching the sunset....
So my neighbor asks me last week: "hope you were not bothered by my washing machine yesterday. I started it a little late at night?"
No bo I didn't hear it I said. And after he'd left I had a massive laugh because I remembered that I had been playing the Beach Boys quite loud at 5 am.
There are no negative comments to make on any of THE BEACH BOYS songs. They were brilliant at harmonising, and great musicians, thanks for the videos. Keith, drummer,THE REMOULDS.
WHEN I WAS A TEEN MY MOTHER KEPT TELLING ME TO TURN THE PHONO-PLAYER DOWN --AND THE WARMTH OF THE SUN PLAYED--SHE STUCK HER HEAD IN THE ROOM AND SAID, "NOW THATS MORE LIKE IT"
This song is beyond sublime and absolute musical perfection--all in under 3 minutes. I was in the studio in '88 when Brian cut the lead vocals for "Love And Mercy." He bashed out perfect intricate 5-part harmony in 5 passes--all first takes. He IS American music.
Alot of people like the uptempo surf type classic's but my favorites are this song and " In My Room'', the beautiful ballads. The tears just flow when you listen to these great songs.
I could listen to this song forever and die in my sleep listening to it... although it's a break up song.. but I still love it. Shed a few tears, reminisced of what it was and what it could be... but life goes on. I will never know how he truly feels about me, maybe someday I will.
I like the rockers, but the Boys have some of the best crooning tunes ever. Amazing cool and power. Wish I could just have this play in my head forever. Blessed.
Brian Wilson is a musical genius. That such stunning, hauntingly beautiful music could come forth from such a tortured and damaged mind is enough to move one to tears. Never again will the Earth be graced by such an astonishing yet mysterious talent. Masterpieces such as "Til I Die" are why we cannot live without music. @Hawk44Gent So true!! Love this song especially because it takes me back to the summers of my youth and touches me still so very much....the mark of a really great song. Brian Wilson was and still is the master of musical composition and a genius in capturing the essence of an era...and the Beach Boys are an American treasure. I love them!
If i can stop crying long im going to hit replay again. After 64 day playing on repeat my CD player finaly gave out. O well now iim going to play it on piano.. Thank you Brian and Beach Boys a millon times over. .....................L+ m
Never really appreciated this song until I heard his remake on "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times." Still like that version slightly more than the original.
Holy hell. When I was young, I trashed the Beach Boys without giving them a chance because my mom was always pushing them on me. But they really are fucking sublime. What was wrong with me?
@kmacmuzikmafia27 Same here. When I got really heavy into classic rock, I always dismissed the Beach Boys because I only knew them for their early surfin hits. And then I found Pet Sounds, which I'd now put in my personal top 5 albums list.
I love when you find good music you never gave a chance to. I don't think I could even have a top 5 albums, lol. But Beach Boys would be somewhere in the top for sure.
Brian not only wrote, but arranged every background vocal to compliment his incredible falsetto lead. The Beatles had trashed almost every American band from the charts but were always in wonder of how Brian Wilson could creep up their backs, and sometimes bump them out of 1st .The pressure eventually got to him but what an amazing accomplishment for one guy.....Brilliant .
@gfgentile wow thats so funny, i had goose bumps right as i read your reply! i have this song on vinyl but it's so beat up from when i was a kid, that i'm afraid i'll ruin my needle.
Dumb question: Is that Brian singing the lead in this?! I am still "learning" . Will someone let me know. I think it is, but u know, us Beach Boys fanatics NEED to know all! Thank you. I love you, Beach Boys! THANK YOU FOR ALL THE TUNES!
The song starts in C major but ends in C# major. Where did Brian sneak in the half step key change? Answer: At 1:40, following a brief modulation at 1:38.
There are several versions of this song on youtube, but this one has particularly good quality stereo.
@ronaldjevans Well noticed mate! Have you ever listened to just the left OR right speaker? It's well mad dude! Pax to all from Ian 'BeachBoy' Smith.Xxx.
@dorkhunter1 Brian wrote whole albums while the rest of the band was on tour. How is he overrated? As well as writing most of the lyrics for their stuff. Mike just made little snips here and there to make it sound better.
Loved the Beach Boys as a group and Brian Wilson as the musical genius that he is..Les Paul was an innovative inventor and withouth him we would not have rock & roll as we know it....
@dorkhunter1 if it wasn't for different viewpoints discussions like this would never happen. i didn't mean to question your love of the beach boys, but that bass player comment hit me the wrong way. anyway from one BB fan to another, good discussion.
@dorkhunter1 let's not compare an outside artist - les paul - in their own right to brian wilson. we're talking about the band. i agree that the entire band deserves credit for the songs because without them, these wonderful songs would've never been recorded. the magic was there because of the band and not one single person. i am simply disagreeing that mike love was as important a songwriter as brian wilson. and you are right, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
@dorkhunter1 also do you think mike love could write a chord progression like this for "the warmth of the sun": I > vi7 > bIII7 > i7 > ii7 > V7 > Vaug or even understand it? does mike even know what a tri-tone substitution is and how important it was at the time in pop music? i think he sums it up best when asked how the vocal harmonies work in their cover of "their hearts were full of spring." he says, "i dunno, but this is my part."
@dorkhunter1 mike wrote the lyrics. brian wrote the music. as a beach boys fan, i am fascinated and astonished that you would classify brian wilson as "nothing but a bass player." clearly you know nothing about the beach boys based on your asinine/comical comment towards me.
@chankagogo12 it's funny that you mention that. I'm reading/studying from my history of the recording industry book "American Popular Music" right now lol. I was just reading how brian not only played with the beach boys, but he wrote, produced, arranged, AND performed for the beach boys. To state that he is simply a bassist would be a ridiculous notion indeed! If anything, Brian Wilson WAS the beach boys, at least during the years that they made all their good hits.
@chankagogo12 Brian wrote the music and Mike added to the lyrics Brian had already written. It is about the feelings Brian had after the JFK assassination... Mike Love is really kind of an idiot that has taken a ride on the coat tails of Brian Wilson's genius, lets not give him that much credit. After all, he hated 'Pet Sounds' and every other song Brian wrote that was not about girls and cars and now performs them live like he loved these songs from day 1.
Bull. Mike never hated 'Pet Sounds'. What he didn't like was the direction the 'Smile' sessions were going; but neither did the other Beach Boys, for that matter.
It's true that Mike has often been a total dick with his endless lawsuits against the other Beach Boys, but that doesn't minimize just how important he was for the group during their heyday.
@beagle123ist It is well known that during the recording of Pet Sounds, Mike was obstinate and indifferent at best toward the music and lyrics, complaining that 'no one will care'... He only waxed poetic about the record after it was released and it gained acclaim... and started to make him money.
@lordkoos Yes, I realize that this song was not on Pet Sounds, just illustrating Mikes lack of foresight of all things beautiful... BTW, Brian states in is biography that he wrote this song the day after JFK was assassinated.. Mike may have 'helped', as he does have writing credits.
@shutterbugblues brian wrote this song. mike love had nothing to do with it. the greatest thing about this song is the flat major chord (EbMajor) and how brian resolves it.
@shutterbugblues yeah, just like how mike was credited with songwriting on "wouldn't it be nice." the only thing he wrote was the "sleep tight baby" round at the end of the song. don't get me wrong, mike was an important member of the band vocally, but nothing else.
The fact that he didn't contribute to Wouldn't It Be Nice (which I agree that his claim was ridiculous and petty) has nothing to do with Warmth of the Sun, okay?
I don't think I have heard a more beautiful song than this. No matter how many times I listen to it, it brings tears to my eyes. Can't explain that, but perhaps that's a reflection of how music can touch our emotions.
Yeah, this is one that always makes me cry, too.....and a few of their other ones. I think, for me, it's more for what was lost and the foolishness and senselessness of it all...........We had Paradise in our grasp and blew it.
Let's see........which of the 2 previous posters is the most lame? Is it the clueless a capella person or the dictionary policeman with a bad case of "I'm smarter than you are". It's the policeman of course. Genuine ignorance although sad is understandable, unlike the grandstanding arrogance of a know it all seeking self confidence at the expense of others.
This is the absolutely best song the Beach Boys ever recorded. Pure a capella. It captured the outstanding vocal harmonies that this group made, which will never be equalled. Poignant, powerful, emotional lyrics. "I don't feel the same way....." Beautiful.
This is one of the most spiritually uplifting, and at the same time, soothing songs that were ever written in the entire history of mankind. Brian and the Boys were definately in tune with a celestial chord line, during these years. I remember reading that Brian and some of the rest of the group was into prayer. This song is one that substantiates it.
The "ugly war" was a bitter pill to swallow for all and I am sure the many who were lucky enough to take the few days off for the R&R were only enjoying whatever brief rest period they had. The music brings memories of the era, some good but some not so good. I try not to look back but when something is there to remind me, it is hard not to see the past. The friendship was brief and I don't even recall their names anymore. But sometimes I cannot help but wonder... did they ever make it out?
Along with Jame's Brown's "I Feel Good", Louis Armstrong's "Its A Wonderful word", this song and several others, was used as a background in the 1987 movie, "Good Morning Vietnam. The song however takes me back to the mid-60's, my College days in the Island of Cebu, the Philippines. An Air Force Base on nearby Mactan Island was an R&R destination for many American GI's coming out of the jungles of Vietnam. Many I met and got drunk with, many probably never made it back to the US after the war.
This song, I believe was written on the night of President Kennedy's assassination by Brian & Mike. This is my favorite BB song along with In my room.
oh, i love this song. Memories. i played the wax off this record. my needle is broke - i am broke, so THANK YOU for sharing this song - and other Beach Boy songs. This song is so simple, so true, and so hopeful. What a genius is Brian Wilson. Thanks, Brian - and the Beach Boys.
The last show I saw @ the bowl was Paul mcartney w/ 10,000 Maniacs. paul boared me to death and I left. Beach Boys however bring it live. Saw them do a free show @ the Queen Mary years ago. Just awesome. I won`t say one is better than the other. For every Beatle fan you have a Stones fan. For every Stones fan, you have a Zeppelin fan. Who, Kinks so on. I just know Beach Boys need to be in this pack of greatness. IMO, The Stones are greatest without reservation. But the Beach boys? Greatness!
Brian and all of you... if I could only tell you how grateful I am for your inspiration... so simple... so perfect... literally brothers, you send my soul off to live another day, in spite of it all...
Some folks compare The Beatles to the Beach Boys . Brian was The Beach Boys . All the music was played by top L.A. studio musicans . The Beatles played in the studio and wrote .
And the Beatles had George Martin who was largely responsible for their success. The Beach Boys may have had studios players on their albums but the Beatles were no virtuosos on their instruments either
Listen - I'm a BB fan . Ringo was a pro drummer before he joined the Beatles . Paul was a great & innovative bassist . George and John more than adequate guitarists . And they all wrote exc. Ringo . Don't give all the credit to Martin . He had a lot work with .
Why the comparison...? I was 13 when the Beach Boys first came out, we loved them. Then the English "Invasion". I told my grandson, I was so fortunate to grow up with the music we had then, from Motown to Acid Rock...Like comparing apples and oranges. Love this song!!
...the love of my life... she left me one day....what could be more tragic than that!

The Beatles had trashed almost every American band from the charts but were always in wonder of how Brian Wilson could creep up their backs, and sometimes bump them out of 1st .The pressure eventually got to him but what an amazing accomplishment for one guy.....Brilliant .

Dumb question: Is that Brian singing the lead in this?! I am still "learning" . Will someone let me know. I think it is, but u know, us Beach Boys fanatics NEED to know all! Thank you. I love you, Beach Boys! THANK YOU FOR ALL THE TUNES!

Brian pulled the half step trick on Surfer Girl
jjhtr 1 year ago
The song starts in C major but ends in C# major. Where did Brian sneak in the half step key change? Answer: At 1:40, following a brief modulation at 1:38.
There are several versions of this song on youtube, but this one has particularly good quality stereo.

@dorkhunter1 Brian wrote whole albums while the rest of the band was on tour. How is he overrated? As well as writing most of the lyrics for their stuff. Mike just made little snips here and there to make it sound better.

@dorkhunter1 if it wasn't for different viewpoints discussions like this would never happen. i didn't mean to question your love of the beach boys, but that bass player comment hit me the wrong way. anyway from one BB fan to another, good discussion.
chankagogo12 2 years ago 3
@dorkhunter1 let's not compare an outside artist - les paul - in their own right to brian wilson. we're talking about the band. i agree that the entire band deserves credit for the songs because without them, these wonderful songs would've never been recorded. the magic was there because of the band and not one single person. i am simply disagreeing that mike love was as important a songwriter as brian wilson. and you are right, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
chankagogo12 2 years ago 3
This has been flagged as spam show
@dorkhunter1 also do you think mike love could write a chord progression like this for "the warmth of the sun": I > vi7 > bIII7 > i7 > ii7 > V7 > Vaug or even understand it? does mike even know what a tri-tone substitution is and how important it was at the time in pop music? i think he sums it up best when asked how the vocal harmonies work in their cover of "their hearts were full of spring." he says, "i dunno, but this is my part."

@dorkhunter1 mike wrote the lyrics. brian wrote the music. as a beach boys fan, i am fascinated and astonished that you would classify brian wilson as "nothing but a bass player." clearly you know nothing about the beach boys based on your asinine/comical comment towards me.
chankagogo12 2 years ago 30
@chankagogo12 it's funny that you mention that. I'm reading/studying from my history of the recording industry book "American Popular Music" right now lol. I was just reading how brian not only played with the beach boys, but he wrote, produced, arranged, AND performed for the beach boys. To state that he is simply a bassist would be a ridiculous notion indeed! If anything, Brian Wilson WAS the beach boys, at least during the years that they made all their good hits.
benbird28 1 year ago
@chankagogo12 I think dorkhunter is Mike Love!
dmcguire70 1 year ago
@chankagogo12 Brian wrote the music and Mike added to the lyrics Brian had already written. It is about the feelings Brian had after the JFK assassination... Mike Love is really kind of an idiot that has taken a ride on the coat tails of Brian Wilson's genius, lets not give him that much credit. After all, he hated 'Pet Sounds' and every other song Brian wrote that was not about girls and cars and now performs them live like he loved these songs from day 1.
deweypug 8 months ago
@deweypug
Bull. Mike never hated 'Pet Sounds'. What he didn't like was the direction the 'Smile' sessions were going; but neither did the other Beach Boys, for that matter.
It's true that Mike has often been a total dick with his endless lawsuits against the other Beach Boys, but that doesn't minimize just how important he was for the group during their heyday.
beagle123ist 4 months ago
@beagle123ist Hey, Is Mike paying you? LOL
wygakyl 2 months ago
@beagle123ist It is well known that during the recording of Pet Sounds, Mike was obstinate and indifferent at best toward the music and lyrics, complaining that 'no one will care'... He only waxed poetic about the record after it was released and it gained acclaim... and started to make him money.
deweypug 2 months ago
@deweypug This song wasn't on Pet Sounds. And Mike Love wrote the lyrics... probably the most soulful thing he ever did.
lordkoos 4 weeks ago
@lordkoos Yes, I realize that this song was not on Pet Sounds, just illustrating Mikes lack of foresight of all things beautiful... BTW, Brian states in is biography that he wrote this song the day after JFK was assassinated.. Mike may have 'helped', as he does have writing credits.
deweypug 4 weeks ago
no other group could have done this, its the king again....BRIAN WILSON.

Fantastic song, one of the Beach Boys' best musically and lyrically. Brian and Mike were the George and Ira Gershwin of the 60's on this song.
shutterbugblues 2 years ago
@shutterbugblues brian wrote this song. mike love had nothing to do with it. the greatest thing about this song is the flat major chord (EbMajor) and how brian resolves it.
chankagogo12 2 years ago
Mike wrote the lyrics.
shutterbugblues 2 years ago
@shutterbugblues yeah, just like how mike was credited with songwriting on "wouldn't it be nice." the only thing he wrote was the "sleep tight baby" round at the end of the song. don't get me wrong, mike was an important member of the band vocally, but nothing else.
chankagogo12 2 years ago
The fact that he didn't contribute to Wouldn't It Be Nice (which I agree that his claim was ridiculous and petty) has nothing to do with Warmth of the Sun, okay?

I don't think I have heard a more beautiful song than this. No matter how many times I listen to it, it brings tears to my eyes. Can't explain that, but perhaps that's a reflection of how music can touch our emotions.

Time for someone to grow up.

If you dont know the meaning of the word that means: "without instrumental accompaniment" then plz do NOT use it
zoob77 2 years ago 4

Ulitawo 2 years ago
Along with Jame's Brown's "I Feel Good", Louis Armstrong's "Its A Wonderful word", this song and several others, was used as a background in the 1987 movie, "Good Morning Vietnam. The song however takes me back to the mid-60's, my College days in the Island of Cebu, the Philippines. An Air Force Base on nearby Mactan Island was an R&R destination for many American GI's coming out of the jungles of Vietnam. Many I met and got drunk with, many probably never made it back to the US after the war.

Greatness!

Some folks compare The Beatles to the Beach Boys . Brian was The Beach Boys . All the music was played by top L.A. studio musicans . The Beatles played in the studio and wrote .
sonor23 2 years ago
And the Beatles had George Martin who was largely responsible for their success. The Beach Boys may have had studios players on their albums but the Beatles were no virtuosos on their instruments either
doable1 2 years ago
Listen - I'm a BB fan . Ringo was a pro drummer before he joined the Beatles . Paul was a great & innovative bassist . George and John more than adequate guitarists . And they all wrote exc. Ringo . Don't give all the credit to Martin . He had a lot work with .
sonor23 2 years ago
Why the comparison...? I was 13 when the Beach Boys first came out, we loved them. Then the English "Invasion". I told my grandson, I was so fortunate to grow up with the music we had then, from Motown to Acid Rock...Like comparing apples and oranges. Love this song!!
