@adibnagui Totally different bikes really, the L is an air cooled older design more suited for dual purpose (street and more gentle dirt) riding, and the R is a liquid cooled beast. Neither are bad but they are different.
I know this does not relate to this video...but we are " Pig" riders. I had an issue with cold starts on my XR650L. Read many a post about the kickstand switch and sure enough my Red Pig would fire right up with the stand up but crank and crank with no fire with it down. Simple fix is to follow the KS lead up to the connection under the seat, cut the two green wires and pig tail them frame side, for me, seal them in heat shrink. The yellow wire is your KS down light on the bars.
Whats the difference between a dual sport and the crf dirt bike? Do they add a speedometer, lights, side view mirrors, and turn signals? Or can this bike really work like a cbr250rr and go 70+mph on the freeway?
@joshuatree1001 I used to ride the Los Angeles freeways on mine but, it's no sport bike. Still with the stock gearing it will go around 100. It is a 650 after all. The neat thing about the XR650L is that you can ride it to the woods and then keep going off road. I now ues mine for extended dual sport/adventure rides. The XR650L is a good bike and has few real rivals. Most of the new crop of dual sports are better performers in the dirt but are a bit high strung. IMHO
@joshuatree1001 the xr 650 is super heavy vs a 250r. Mine was a tank. i only rode mine on trails and its was like riding a dump truck lol. Ivan is the man and makes that look so easy.
This is unbelievable, I had a DR650 and rode it on some tracks. If you had skills and no fear you can make them work in the corners. They're just so big and heavy.
Horns should be required on MX/SX tracks. You could even have a system, like if you beep for a really long time it means you really want to pass the guy.
Dam Ivan thats Awsome riding as most people dont know the XRs dont handle like the little bikes. Come out to Arizona again and Ride my R model. I take my XR560R to the track just to make the others jaw drop
@oldmotorguy can you please tell me why Honda doesn't go to fuel injection like the kawi klr650 is now. I love the xr650l but I'm a little intimidated by the carburetor. I dont know how to tinker and tune them. Is their any reason why I should prefer a carb? and if you can answer my first question too please. thanks
Not the lightest nor the fastest... The Honda XR650l is without a doubt one of the most reliable machines ever made ! Youll never push one, unless you run out of gas, You can work on it yourself ! and Its ride is good all around !
I've been an Ivan fan since his days racing for Plano Honda. But, I gotta' say that the pictures Joe Bonello caught of Ivan losing his drawers in the middle of the Hangtown national were "priceless"!!! How he kept riding with his gear hangin around his thighs, boxers blowing in the breeze...too funny!!
Well i cant ride like that on my 650l, But they are a blast. Im on my third one since they came out in 1993. Ive owned dozens of bikes and this is the one i keep coming back to. They havent had to change them cause theres no need (yes, lighter would be nice). Best upgrade is to the tires and regearing the sprockets lower.Great bike for tall riders like me. 6ft5. Fun post!
@dragracer464, I do have a 650L and ride it very well but this video is of Ivan Tedesco a professional, He is doing a heck of a job making the big L look light and flickable, it isn't. This is what truly awesome skills look like!
@oldmotorguy Well yeah, i have realized it isnt a light bike. He is very good at throwing that beast around. Its ridiculous just how easy the pros make it look!
I live in Lancaster and love riding to Helendale, Barstow, and Stoddard Valley. Harper Lake and Black Canyon are great rides. I'm going to try a ride from Lancaster to Stateline.
I have been riding XR650L's for the last 12 years offroad exclusively. I like the freedom to go on the road anywhere i want for "guerilla offroading". I have put in 40,000 miles on them. I think they are the best all-around motorcycle in the world with a sweet engine that easily opens up with just jets and filter work, and removing plug in stock muffler to be a 4-sec 0-60 monster (with full knobbies) with massive torque.
haha the horn! lol they need horns on their supercross bikes so when they make a pass they can flicker their lights and honk the horn and they will move over
According to minute 4:50 of this video, if you listen closely, the Honda mechanic clearly states that the brp in this video is chipped. This might be a good performance tip, for anyone with an XR650L.
