  • Go Thunderchickens! Carrying on the PROUD tradition of the CH-46 crews that flew in Vietnam. From the proud son of a US Army Aviator that flew 'Slicks' in Vietnam, '65-'66.

  • Eventually they will give these osprey some Littlebird or Firescout drones to command aswell.

They currently use the Littlebird drones as targeting and recon for the apache longbow which acts as a control center and can use the little bird's target lock to fire from the apache and hit targets from out of range of sight attacks

  • Agreed. Also, the door gunner needs a telescopic sight on the M240 as well as a ballistic shield. How stable is that MG mount?

  • @dmcfarli No they don't. a shield would just take up more room and space.

A telescopic sight on a M240 or any heavy MG is pointless. You wouldnt be able to stay on target with a scope.

  • @kicknbazz1615

"More room and space" ? Looks pretty spacious to me.

For a mounted heavy MG, a scope makes complete sense; the recoil for the 7.62mm NATO is totally manageable from the 240 especially when it's mounted.

  • @dmcfarli Well there doing just fine without all that stuff.

  • @kicknbazz1615 haha, plus theyre not really meant to be troop killers. theyre really more for cover fire and support. and youd have to hunch down to use a sight cus of how low its mounted

  • A British weapons company has a side gunner weapon system in where the gunner has a telescopic sight system and FLIR built into the helmet. It's a weight/cost issue vs accuracy. My guess is that the gunner's job is to lay down cover fire for those entering and exiting the aircraft. It looks like a bad set up for air to ground operations so I don't think that's the use for this system.

  • @orlock20 yeah, pretty sure its just a precaution. they really havent turned these into warbirds yet. theyre still only used for troop transport and this is about as armed as they get. i really wish theyd expand on the design.

  • @09011994 Yeah man, a gunship version would be interesting.

  • They need to place a chain gun onboard that the pilot can use.

  • Yeah I've always wondered why they haven't armed this thing with pilot/co-pilot controlled weaponry. They could easily mount a minigun under the cockpit. I would think anyway. It doesn't seem like the weight would be a problem ether. Its kind of strange.
