Sooo jealous of the 3rz, been looking at doing the swap for a while, following on Marlin ect.. but ORS closed down and just to be honest I coundnt do wiring if my life depended on it... but the fact that the 3rz passed the 22ret blows my mind! awesome build! - Kitty.
Sweeeeet bro! 3RZ's are the way to go! Quick tip on those engines...pull the balance shafts for +15-20hp and it will lighten the rotating mass by 20lbs. I had to do it the hard way when one of the bearings blew out and destroyed my engine.
Definitely the 3.4 V6 will have more bottom end torque than a 4 cylinder. But it is far heavier, more things to go wrong (like two headgaskets), more expensive to tune (requires more spark plugs & wires), generates more heat, and you'll be more likely to break a drivetrain component from the increased weight and torque. Also, the extra weight will wear out your suspension and tires at a faster rate.
I understand these are nit-picky complaints I am describing but you've gotta look at it from each side. Of course nothing I will say will change your mind. Either you are a powerful V6 guy or a more nimble 4cyl guy like myself. I enjoy the lightweight easy to work on, lots of space and room under the hood, cooler operation, and 17 MPG in the city with 37" tires. I make 21 MPG on the freeway! Try that with a V6 and 37" rubbers!
uhh No the 22R does not have head gasket issues. The only way you could have issues is if you over heated & put the head back on or the machinist didn't mill the head correctly. The 22R does not have head gasket issues
Now now the 1fz... or the 7MgT or the 3VZ. But those are b/c of materials & poor number of head bolts or placement.
Don't think the 22R would have the rep it's got today with "head gasket issues"
yes I take great offense at you smearing the 22R b/c YOU had problems with one
the stock 22ret our turds just more to go wrong for hardley any more power
