  • this video sucks ass its just a friggin slide show i would go to friggin google if i wanted to wach a fuckin slide show, but good song

  • Kick Ass Song!!!! I heard this somewhere before, but I forgot to write it down. Is the bands name Night Wish by any chance?

  • Agreed, but I would say that he Main was not the final straw but the perfect pretext and green light that our interests needed to take over the colonies of the declining Spanish empire that included Puerto Rico, Guam (which we still own) and the Phiiippines that was our colony until WWII.

  • @mar0113

The fighting in the Pacific and Puerto Rico was considered a side show, many were surprised by Dewey's victory at Minilla Bay and no one knew what to do with the Phillippines and tensions between US and Fillippino troops hit the breaking point after Spain surrendered which triggered the Phillippine-American War of 1899-1902. Even if the Maine hadn't been sunk war would still have broken out since the newspaper mogals on both sides had heated up the desire for war to a boiling point

  • @mar0113

The Spanish American War is something you need to look at it from the perspective of 1898 and not 2011. Back then it was the age of Imperialism, when countries messured their greatness on the size of their empires and the so called "white man's burden" became an excuse for numerous wars In the case of the war with Spain there are no veterans left to tell this generation what the war was really like and the only sources we have are reports diaries and biased newspaper articles

  • Before writing comments I will recommend you guys to read about the Ostend Manifesto.. it will give you a better historical perspective about the matter..

  • @mar0113

The manifesto in which the US offered to buy Cuba from Spain, in the 1854 and suggested military action if Spain refused but was shelved due to the outrage it provoked when published.

The point we can all agree on though is that the despute over Cuba was the real cause of the Spanish-American War and by 1898 tensions over Cuba and US support of the rebels were at the boiling point and a war between the US and Spain over Cuba was inevitable the Maine was the final straw

  • Point is this was an accident not some conspiricy dreamed up by a media mogal who was then stopped by James Bond. The story has been so twisted and distorted that the fact the Maine Disaster is one of the worst disasters in US Naval History is over looked. Yes neither side was whiling to back down, the US supported the Cuban rebels in their war against Spain, and Spain was too proud to give up it's Empire

  • iheard t waz an accident but theres always some1 2 blame :-( WAT DO U THINK???

  • @yesiica13 it was an accident, coal bunker explosion most likely, an incorrectly someone said it was not investigated at the time, it was. the navy had a board, three naval officers, they concluded that the spanish most likely did not blow it up. Capt Sigsbee, was on that board, he was the Capt on the Maine when it exploded. BUT, the Press back then printing bogus stories, and whipped the natin into a frenzie for war, all to sell newspapers. look it up, it's true.

  • @ ejdiii333 yea iagree TOTALY umm wats aqe? o.O

  • iam spanish ... the spanish NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER make this NEVER ...FALSE !!!!!!!!!!!!!! US Goberment kill his own people , US Goberment help the independent of Cuba and kill inocent spanish ,inocent american and inocent cubanos ....THIS IS THE TRUE

  • @CapitanFiro

To be honest the sinking of the Maine was an accident. It was caused by a coal bunker fire (an accident that was common on ships of the late 19th and Early 20th Centuries) that spread to the ship's magazines. At the time though no one thought to investigate the sinking, and like today everyone believed what the media told them

  • thanks you are an honest man merry christmas : )

  • @snakes3425 . the Us navy did explore it somewhat, and the board assigned to the incident said they doubted strongly the spanish blew it up. but you are very correct in saying it wa the press who whipped thewhole thing up. never the less, Cuba did get it's independence from Spain. and if you want t othink like a conspiricy theorist thinks, blame it on the Cuban insurgents. they had motive, to force the Us to go to war with spain, do help the rebels. not much changes in world events.

  • @ejdiii333

War had already become inevitable by the time the Maine was lost, the US was already firmly behind the Cuban rebels, because of outrage over Gen. Weyler's, the Spanish General in charge of Cuba, brutality in putting down the revolt, including the use of terror, periodic executions and relocating Cuban citizens to Concentration Camps, hence the reason he's got his nickname "Butcher Weyler" the Sinking of the Maine, even though it was an accident, was the last straw

  • I agree with you there. Yes it was inevitable, the Maine explosion was an excuse at best to speed things uo. The Media took the incident and ran pell mell with it, and as you know spiced up (made up) much of the stories, yes there where atrocities, but like most media, they add a little (in that case alot) of extra color to events. But you do know that the TOP US NAVY OFFICIALS did not agree W ith the media, but who listens to them when the country wants a war anyways. Hearst not alone

  • @ejdiii333

The point is the explosion was an accident, and since the wreck of the Maine was rediscovered more evidence has surfaced of a coal fire in bunker A-16 spreading to her forward magazines. However even members of the Spanish Government felt Weyler had crossed the line and wanted him removed.

  • @CapitanFiro spanish opressed the cubans. we intervened. spanish got defeated. end of story

  • oh yeah for this reason us goberment kill 1.000.000 filipines for example ,kill vietnam peoples ,irak people,.. clasic american ... end of history ^^

  • You are the classic American who needs that they tell him a story to sleep calmly but this not to be true...

  • I am only going to say this once spain's army and navy could not win a battle if there mothers lives depened on it they sucked and they still do at the battle of san juan the spainish had helping them non other then the GERMANS with the germans they won with out they lost so get the history porsion right before you decide who has the best military obiveously not SPAIN!!!!!

  • And you are proud ? Spain in decadence sent cuba 200 mil soldiers the same than the USA ...the majority dead by the "malaria " not combat ...only the state of california had more money than Spain...stupid wars stupid money ...

  • The U.S blew up the maine to have an excuse to get into the war, AMERICAN GREED. those were Madoff grandfather anboard those ship

  • Remember the Maine and her victims!

  • There's a USS Maine memorial monument in New York City. It's located on the southwest corner of Central Park on Columbus Circle.

  • you should all watch Citizen Kane, explains the whole story quite well

  • Spain only lost the naval battle, the others win!!spain 4 ever!!!!!!

  • spain lost the battle of san juan hill and every other land engagement in the war. in the philippines/guam they where too cowardly to fight and turned belly up and surrendered without a fight

  • No USA or Spain did not sink the Maine it was caused by coal dust explosion. Also, My grandfather Who was a cheif Petty offcier was there on USS Geoditic Survey Ship Batch and took a picture of the Maine the morning after it blew up. Also, he later spied on the spanish fort guarding the harbor using a vetigable merchants cart to hide the large glass plate camera he used to take pics of the defenses.

  • I knew it!

First I always thought that is was a boiler explosion, because ships back then were powered by steam.

  • This is what my History teacher told me...

There were 2 rooms and 1 of them had a fernacethe one next to it had ammo,gunpowder,etc...the fernace had a spark and it got to the other room...thus blowing it up. Idk if thats really the reason but its a pretty good answer i think

  • R.I.P members of the U.S.S maine and the sank ships that also sank with thousands of people

  • my teacher said once that it couldve happened by the crew smoking maybe someone dropped a cigarette on some gunpowder or something. noone knows for sure noone ever will.

  • True, the wreck was rediscovered back in 2000, however the area were the explosion occured, has broken up

  • telkines . The batle of San Juan Hills was not in Havana .

This hill is located in an otre province (state)call oriente , and the city is Santiago De Cuba .

I am very fascinated by all the documentation , pictures and information that was colected about the Maine , and the war at the time when the filming was just invented

  • USS Maine = THE BIG LIE!

  • how is it a big lie. ur the big lie big fat ass. thousand of peeps died.

  • yes the USS Maine did sunk! what I meant by a lie is that the spaniards did it, the truth is that the USS Maine was sink by the americans, and then the spain took the blame.

  • The Maine was sunk by an accident, not by either a Spanish, Cuban, or American conspiracy. The press of course twisted the story ( funny how little has changed with the Press) to blame Spain.

But if you still want to jump on the "Screw America" Bandwagon, that is your choice.

  • Spain only lost the naval battle

  • spain lost every battle in that war i belive, only chance it woulda had at winning one was when it sent a fleet too retake Manila bay from the American but it called back when a powerful American fleet sailed towards Spain

  • the legendary resistance of spain is know through centuries and thousands of years. No powerful fleets and no technological toys , the heart of the spain Homeland resists the Roman invaders during decades (Numantia, Carthago...), the Muslim invasions , the Napoleon and Hitler armies...

  • american and spaniards were brave, but we lost no because a low valor or heroism of spanish military , only defeat was possible due to the corrupt politicians of the government of the King´s Court.

  • 1741 : a "powerful" fleet of 200 british ships , 30.000 troops and 4.000 guns pretends to invade Spain in Cartagena, the entire PEOPLE OF SPAIN defended their Freedom and Honour and the British were defeated by the led general Blas de Lezo.

  • In Battle of San Juan Hill, La Havana, Cuba, 1898, the spanish garrison of 400 infantrymen fought bravely and rejected the superior forces of 8000 soldiers from the roosevelt rough riders cavalry.

  • People of La Havana and officials helped the sailors of the Maine after the disaster, but yellow reporters "imagine" the evil Spain in newspapers.

  • Spain innocent.

    U.S. murderer its own marine

  • Far more likely is that the incident was used to agitate public opinion toward war with Spain. It was not the first accident in a ship of similar design, the Maine was the last of the ships built with no separation or little counter designs to prevent an accidental explosion like that one (I think). That adds even more criminal elements to the story and feeds the conspiracy theories about the U.S. intentionally placing the ship and the crew in danger in potentially hostile shores.

  • Truth of the matter: the Maine was destroyed by a coal bunker fire that spread to her forward powder magazine.

  • That was the design flaw, the closeness of its engines and its magazine that led to accidents in other ships like her. The design flaw was repaired in later ships, but not in her. Being a potentially accident prone ship by design, one has to wonder why she and not other ship was send to Havana. The conspiracy theory of intentionally putting the ship in harms way to create an incident to feed into the anti-Spanish frenzy does not seem so far fetch in this view (at least politically wise).

  • At the time the nature of the design flaw wasn't known, and up until the explosion the Maine had a spotless accident record.

  • Oops, my bad it was the Maine accident that forced a change in the design instead. Thanks for the information. Which raises questions intead on sabotage or a mine then. The mystery goes on, any evidence of sabotage could have been eliminated by the explosion and under water. But the political manipulation was very controversial just like the one of 9-11 a century later.

  • The coal in the the bunker closest to the forward magazine is believed to have self-ignitghted, which was a common problem on ships built after the civil war.

  • Diving expeditions and analysis by naval engineers have concluded that the USS Maine was sunk by a boiler explosion instead of a mine.

The remains of the USS Maine clearly show that the source of the explosion came from WITHIN the boiler-room compartment.

  • was there a funeral at havana as it is said below the photo?

  • Yes there was a funeral in havana it was pretty big too

  • Manifest Destiny, Alfred Thayer Mahan, Theodore Roosevelt's appropiation of the Monroe Doctrine... Look where all of that has driven the USA and the world into. Greetings from Madrid.

  • Big Deal! Conquistadors, Spanish Empire, Gold, God and Glory...look at what that gave Spain! Please you are just ticked off you lost your empire.

YO OS LLAMO COBARDES...ALGUN DIA LLEGARA VUESTRA HORA

  • Nightwish... nice, I doubt most people would recognize Sleeping Sun. Great touch though.

  • franfe80, que manera de comer mierda

  • America is guilty. God save brave spanish army in Cuba. Dammned americans!!!!!!

  • the brave soldiers and sailormen died ,but the politicians and journalists continues to make lies for wars (the Maine, the invasion of Poland 1939, the imaginary massive mass destruction weapons of Iraq...) .

  • The spaniards never sunk the USS Maine. This was a great Lie written in the Papers by Hersch.

  • umm...do you mean "HEARST"?...just wondering...dummy

  • sorry, I mean Hearst, yes. Greetings from Spain.

  • Very well done. Who sings that song, very haunting.

  • i dont know what mckinley hoped to achieve by sending the Maine to cuba, it was only gonna be the spark that set the war off, surely he knew that

  • Good for you! The heroic dead are often overlooked in this day of cynicism and childish conspiracy theories.

  • a very moving tribute

  • I chose the USS Maine because I felt it's the forgotten part of the Spanish American War.

Like the victims of 9/11 the crewmen who died are forgotten instead over shadowed by conspricy theories

  • I remember when I was in fifth grade in the early sixties in Cuba, as good leftists the communists were rewriting the history of Cuba. In the history class the teacher brought three different stories about the explosion of the Main IN A SINGLE WEEK. The first: The spanish blewed it. On the second day: It were the Cuban patriots fighting for independence who blew it. The last one: It was the american themselves who blew it, see that no officers died.

  • I'm not surprised.

  • that's alot of people who got blown...

  • Three of four days after I came to this country, I visit Washington DC with my uncle. I visited the Monument to the Main in the Arlinton Cemetery and actually I saw the name of many officers in the list of the dead.
