  • I always thought of this technique as "that thing at the very beginning of Dream Theater's 'The Mirror'"

  • @Guitarmazdur it is used then as well, the earliest uses i know of are pantera, dream theater, and morbid angel. I simply call it a gojira pick slide because of their frequent use of the sound

  • This sounds better/is easier to achieve if you use the tip/nail of your thumb. Try it!! :D

  • I was doing this sound since 2002. But for me honestly sounded like crap unuseful thing. GOJIRA CAME AND MADE IT GOOOOOOOOOD! xD

  • I mean, quite simply this is just a rake across the strings while you are hitting natural harmonics. Not a slide, per se, but I suppose that is close enough.

  • It's the sound Godzilla makes to attract prey

  • That's one FAT & HEAVY tone!

  • How do you get a heavy sound like that? My rg has inf's but it's hard to get that tone

  • @FrenchToastSucks1 Hey if you want a heavy tone the most useful piece of info I learned was to "scoop" your mids or to have lower mids. It gives your tone a more articulate low end try the badd a little past 12 o'clock and your treble a little less below 12 o'clock. keep experimenting though and just keep the mid scooping in mind.

  • @Boooby

Why would you scoop your mids? Scooped mids sound like shit and will be hard to hear in the studio, and almost impossible to hear live. You should actually be cranking the mids almost as much as you can, and rolling back on the treble a little bit, and rolling back on the bass even more.

  • @BasedBaglier works for me bud.

  • @Boooby I usually keep my mid knobs between 11 and 2. I can't just scoop them all out because that's just horrid lmaoo. But I yanked those INF's soon after I left that comment and it sounds a lot better now :)

  • @FrenchToastSucks1 Thats great and I didn't mean get rid of em completely just turn em down.

  • so many bands are all over this, Whitechapel, danza, Acacia Strain, Within the ruins, I couldn't figure out how to do this, thanks!

  • dream theater does this to in erotomania

  • @thijsbults oh really? what I'm 100% sure is that they used this technique on The Mirror. The very beginning of the song. Oh the heaviness

  • @williamindragunawan lol

    I always mess those up

  • @williamindragunawan lol

    I always mash those us

  • You can also do it by dragging your thumb over the strings as you drag the pick. The benefit of that method is that you don't have to be at the fifth fret.

  • Just so everyone knows. There are tons of bands that use this technique. Morbid Angel, Tony Danza, ect. But Gojira really coined the usage of it. That's like, their trademark, in a sense.

  • @peacesellsforall yeah definetely, I just call it a gojira pickslide because they use it in sooo many songs. Morbid angel were probably the first to do it, and Pantera did it as well in "We'll grind that axe for a long time" at 23 seconds in, but gojira use it as if it were actually a note haha

  • @supershiva11 Yeah I know exactly what you mean. I was mainly saying it for all these noobs that didn't realize why you called it that. Haha.

  • amazing technique. but just one clarification. Trey from Morbid Angel introduced this technique first.

  • sick thax a lot man

  • alexi laiho also does it occasionally.

  • Thanks man, Im getting so into this band and you made it super clear! Their sounds are so wicked I cant wait to give it a try.

  • I have the same strap :D

  • In the "Gojira Masterclass" video, he does it with the thumb AND the pick, a bit differently.

  • thanks for the tutorial bro! was concise and too the point :D

  • ibanez s320?

  • @BCI9279 yes sir

  • @supershiva11 Aweosme. I had one a couple of years ago. Getting rid was one of the biggest mistakes I made, lol. I'm going to buy a new one asap though! Great Guitar for the price.

  • It doesn't have to be on the 5th fret, it can be anywhere on the guitar, but obviously you'll get a different sound :P

  • Nice, thanks. I saw them live a while back. They are EPIC!

  • I've been trying to figure this out for a looooooooong time! it's sooo simple!

I feel like such an idiot for not trying that before, thanks A LOT!

  • @Screamokid2k To some extent yes, the most important thing is the right hand, and the best sound you get out of it is right before your bridge pickup sliding across, gives a huge sweeping range.

  • Thank you so much! I always wanted to do this!

  • johnny u true are a beautiful man

  • Thanks a whole lot, man! I was wondering how to do this and now I know! I'm going to start incorporating this into my own songs.

  • good to hear man, took me a long ass time to figure this out, such an odd but useful sound too.

  • sounds better than i could do 10/10
