"...humanism is a lie..." As Christians, it is a shame that we have allowed our country to dictate to us what to believe about the origin of life and the universe. They call it "science," but it a question of history. More specifically, it is about our origins - something that science cannot accurately piece together. In Communist countries, there is no freedom of thought. Unless America acts, we will become just like them.
My older brother gave me a copy of "Ph'lip Side", and Kerry Livgren's"Seeds" album for Christmas in1980. I was recently saved, and struggling with depression, and heavily entrenched in secular heavy metal music. Both recordings were a tremendous encouragement to me, and helped me to begin more consistently listen to godly music for inspiration and edification. I'm a die-hard fan of Keaggy's music to this day, and own over 35 of his 51-plus albums on CD, When it comes to the guitar, he's #1!
This is the first concert I saw, that was christian based. What an experience. I never forgot it. Not this specific performance. But, The Phi'p Side Tour.
@snowtraveler65 you are correct! I never noticed the year wasn't right. The video was recorded in 1981 (according to several different sources), but yes, the actual Ph'lip Side album was in 1980. Correction made, thank you!
@PKfanSteph I didn't mean to be overly picky. I'm just really familiar with that album. I saw the PKB on the Ph'lip Side tour. I was at a point in life where I was really struggling. My parents gave me the album for Christmas that year. The following spring God used "Just A Moment Away" (another song from the album) to pull me out of a very dark place. I was able to share the story with Phil after a concert in 1987. We were both blessed.
personalyI l ike this musical period, maybe,PK may be thinking different but, I can hear lots musical influencias at this time of his carear. But at the end he is the GTR master.I have borrowed some tricks from this amacing humanbeing.I love gtr.s but,Phil is so special. love you guys!!!
I had the privilege to watch two of his concerts in NY in the early 90's. I have good memories of this song, too. He's the best eletric guitar player Í've ever seen.
I believe it annoys Phil when someone asks him if he realizes how famous he could have been if he weren't a Christian (which of course is true to some extent), but don't forget the reason he plays the way he has since GH is because of Jesus and the indwelling Holy Spirit. The choice he has made to speak the truth in his songs (despite the obvious consequences) has and will continue to bear eternal fruit - I for one have been strengthened and encouraged by his music!
Heard Phil do a concert in 1973. He had just left Glass Harp in Cleveland, Ohio.
Saw him a few years ago in the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Pleasant Hill, Oregon he sighned my, " What A Day " LP, I believe it was his first LP after leaving Glass Harp. We had him at our fellowship meeting in Cleveland on Henninger Road. Ken Unger was our fellowship leader along with Pastor Warren Campbell. What a night of great music and ministry. Been listening to Phil for all these years. Love it.
I first saw Phil in 1971 playing an outdoor concert in Cincinnati, OH while attending University of Cincinnati. As a non-christian guitarist at the time, I thought, WOW, who IS this guy. I got saved that summer, got together with 2 members of my original band (who also had gotten saved) and we found a Christian drummer. In 1974 we came to CA to fellowhship at Calvary Chapel of Costa Mesa and to play our original Christian music. We had just recorded our first LP. The name of our group was Grace.
i found his phli'p side album in our closet so ive een able to hear it in good condition. its amazing i wish i was alive to go to one of the concersts. or even one when he was with glass harp
Odd that he'd be using a mic of that type without any windscreen close-miking that way. This is what Keaggy does best--his full-blown LesPaul tone. Love it.
So cool that dude filmed this off his t.v. way back when! Love the main man Phil, followin' him since '75 - wow! What a treat to hear this. Keaggy deserves more recognition for the guitarist he is! Yep!
Awesome. The video however is fuzzy. And the audio seems to echo.I for one would pay good money just to see this performance on dvd IF it was clean and devoid of space noise.
Would someone please put this video and Time video together.I will be the first in line to buy.
Guys is not an offence What I Said so, I do Have it and I Love this vhs video from beginning to the end but if you could Watch me transfered Video I Asure you then you will agree me,I am Not kidding,I Do have one more stuff video from PK That doesn't Reflect here on youtube,I am doing A job to see if I can set this full Vhs video more two one song video and I Will always do AND I will be there
This song would make a great concert intro! I have the CD compilation of "Ph'lip Side", "Town To Town", and "Play Thru Me", so I definitely recommend it. Rock on, Phil!
While it is virtually impossible to pick Phil's best, this has to rank up there among the top songs. I read the Guitar Player magazine interview from back then and he was emulating guitar great Alan Holdsworth with his signatur chromatic phrases. Brilliant. Besides having his own style he can pick up almost any other artists licks too and make them work. This song ROCKS in a major way. Phil has been blessing us all for 4 decades now. God bless him.
Man i love this song,it takes me back to the early eighties when i first heard this on a t.v show called lightmusic.Lightmusic was the first contemporary christian video show to literally breakout new music artist's.Mylon Lefevere,Amy Grant,Michael W.Smith,D.C Talk,Gladd,Take 6,as well as Phil Keaggy!Thank you so much for posting this video,God Bless.
I haven't heard this in years! Thanks for posting. I'm laughing because I never noticed the Steely Dan influence in the harmony and guitar solo until now! Time and perspective. :)
A Royal Commandment actually appeared on an earlier album, Phil'p Side. This album, along with Town to Town & Play Thru Me, form a trio that represents a period in time where Phil was writing alot and was also getting major CCM attention, while gradually gainingthe attention of secular publications like Guitar Player magazine. I love the vibe of these albums, Phil has done so many wonderful and amazing things throughout almost 40 years of recording and performing. Phil rocks on all level.
Phil released this on his own album (not with Glass Harp) - I think it was Play Thru Me, but I'm sure somebody will correct me if I'm remebering wrong... :)
I first met Phil at the Adams Apple, Ft. Wayne, Ind. in 1972. So many classic Christian musicians: Larry Norman, Randy Stonehill, Steve Camp, Peter York, etc. I've been so blessed. I saw Phil recently at the concert in Staten Islad. Primo...Thank you Phil.
It's not all that crazy. God created all of us and all our talents, and that includes Jimi Hendrix and his talent for the guitar, Jay-Z's talent for rapping, or Celine Dion's for singing, it all depends on whether we dedicate them to him and his glory or not. I'm sure Phil would have been just as sick if he was purely writing his Christian stuff all his life. It's only sad when people are masters at their craft and don't glorify the God that gave them the talent in the first place
I have seen Phil in concert, first in Cleveland, Ohio. On Hennenger Road, at a small fellowship just above the Zoo in 1973. Ken Unger was the leader. Then in Oregon many years later, in 2002 or so. He is plain amazing, and is equivalent to McCartney in talent and voice.
wow i have been playing guitar in the secular world for 20 years with in and out gigs at various churches on Sunday morning worship. Without a doubt Phil Keaggy is the best American guitarist of all time.
Classic!! Thanks for posting it, PKfan Steph! I taped this in the 80's off of 'Lightmusic' and still watch it. The Audio on mine ain't much better, but I don't have the means to post it anyway.
Great song by a great guitar player----and a good singer as well. Phil Keaggy ranks right up there with Ritchie Blackmore, Steve Morse, Frank Zappa, and Jimi Hendrix in my favorite guitarists of all time.

Now I know why Jimmy Hendricks answered the following question the way he did..
"How does it feel to be the best guitarist in the world?"
"I don't know- ask Phil Keaggy"
Great playing, even through the wear and tear plus compression the video went through; you still get a glimpse at how great a guitarist he is!

I just found out Phil was high on acid in 1970 when he received the news his mother was killed in a car crash.
His sister shared her faith with him and he decided to start a new life.
I'm just intrigued that he became the guitarist he is as a secular man, but then later gave his great talents over to God.
