actually there are 3(der, die, das). dem, den, des are only different cases

they're the word "the" in different cases. In English "the" doesn't change for cases, as it does in German, so those still translate to "the" as the definite article. Much like how I could say that German has 5 words (more if you want to count dative ones) for "you".
