This recording should be preserved for historically valid reasons, the technical
advances can only be fully appreciated by comparison with the surviving materials. I heard a cylinder performance in 1942 on stoep in Zululand, unforgettable memory of
Beethovens 7th echoing in the hills at Entumeni. Thanks for this priceless gem.
One of my favorite sopranos, Blanche Arral, made quite a number of Bettini cylinders. Regrettably, I've never heard a one of them. I have two very early Chalia Victors but both play very badly because wear from the heavy horn support that put too much weight on the sound box. I have a feeling, too, that the original disc owner didn't bother changing needles after every playing. Thanks for your posting.
Hi Alec: Chalia puts her own unique stamp on this piece, recorded often and by so many artists. Very nice, and moreover on a very good transfer! Thank you! Doug --
Ward Marston offers a very interesting discussion about Chalia's life, career, and recordings (the little we know) on YT. According to him, Chalia began recording in 1897-99 in the form of Bettini cylinders, only six of which have been discovered so far out of more than 160 that she made. She then recorded for Zonophone as well as Victor. Judging by the few recordings we have of her, I find her voice very pleasing and her technique excellent. Thanks, Alec, for this posting!
@meltzerboy , I know about Marston's CD Rosalia Chalia. 1,5 years ago I send to Marston CD with 10 digital dubbings of 10 Bettini's cylinders from my collection. 2 Mantelli, 1 Lardinois, 1 Chalia and Del Papa duet. Becker, Gustave D'Aquin (flautist) and 4 orchestral. Marston used in the CD only 1 Mantelli item (Meyerbeer on record, 1899-1913, Marston 53009-2). Why he did not used Chalia item I do not know.
Actually I guess the products of Bettini cylinders were really limited. We don't where are they! Even we miss some Pol Plancon recordings on Bettini cylinders.

Many young sopranos in that era, for example Mary Lewis, sang in this manner as well.
