I have a girl who thinks she's grown up too. Soon enough, she'll fly away, and my son too. I'm thinking that he was inspired by that more than a bit. The mother behind the girl "with a cage" kind of gave it away to me. So many layers to this song, I love it dearly.
Thanks for posting this! i love this song. I wish I could sing it was well as he does. I saw him in concert a few years ago and took a photo of him playing. Then I turned the pic into a painting. Let me know if you'd like to see it.
(Reply to RyanMalham) I would. RS is an incredible performer and songwriter, so I'd be interested in seeing how you've captured some facet of him on canvas.
After hearing this 25 times, i can still hardly breathe when it's over. It's not about the sand castle. It's not about the canary. It's about the little girl. Mom has the cage, but in a few years the little girl will be the one flying away. She'll never survive there, thinks Mom. But I think she will. Risk, loss, a tear or two, and sweet sweet freedom.
Ten months later and I've just spotted this video for the first time (I didn't realise anyone was filming that night!). I must embed it on our MySpace page sometime...
I think the blues tune referred to above must be 'I Got Mine' by Roy Bookbinder. I know he played it that night. The catalyst for this was Richard bumping into Roy the night before in Camden Town of all places (I think he was bumming a light!)
Beautiful, as always. I've been very fortunate to experience Richard live many time. The first time I heard him was on college radio station; he was playing that day at an arts festival. Who was this guy?? I had to go !!! It ended up being held at a high school, indoors due to rain. Can you imagine...a high school ? He was amazing, and I've been hooked ever since.
I was there too and he was excellent - shame about the curfew (Sunday night early finish) - I could have listened all night. That was a great blues number he did too - does anyone know the name of the tune? He told me afterwards but I forgot (was it by Lonnie Mack?).

In this song, Richard uses DADGAD tuning. It's tuned just as it's spelled.

I love this...
And here's the sign of an excellent guitarist/singer - it just SEEMS so simple and easy. Natural. But it's very difficult stuff.
Loved it.

Can anyone shed any light on why such a masterful song has only been viewed 42 times in 10 days? The world is clearly tone deaf!!
