well they blend together plots in SRW. And evas, gundams, getters, VFs etc. were made to fight aliens in the alpha series. even though the origional enimes appear. so its highly likely the EVAs were modified for space use.
Is also possible. But it's probly more complicated than that. Not dissing EVA now, but given Earth's technology level in SRW, it makes even less sense to even develop an eva when you could make a kickass robot with out all the danger and costs required to make a EVA. But that's SRW logic.
