Gramm used to have a weekly show on public TV. He was very interesting. I heard him a couple times live. I remember him at Constituion Hall and and with Sills at the Kennedy Center.
Gramm had a number of obstacles. He was too short for the toga roles. He had good low notes but never had that bass rumble. Yet he wasn't a baritone either. Notice he skips the high G.
Donald Gramm, along with the late John Reardon, did a lot to further the cause of the home grown American opera singer and contemporary opera at the NYCO, with Sarah Caldwell in Boston and on television. Both wonderful musicians and actors. R.I.P.
Gramm didn't have a huge voice, but his instrument was handsome and very well used. He was also a fine actor. It's absurd that this fine singer made so few recordings (relatively speaking). I admit feeling a kinship with Gramm, because he was from Milwaukee. I grew up there and in Menomonee Falls, a Milwaukee suburb. Not to mention that we both studied at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music, though he was a much better singer than I ever became:) --
