Sure GM will have No debt after bankruptcy but the taxpayers are held accountable for the debt.

The idea behnd the bail outs was to buy the debts as an investment and over the course of X-amount of years make X-amount of money after the bail out money is repaid. It'sakin to buying shares or stock in a company and as such the government has bought enough to have a sizeable controlling interest and set policies. The problem comes when these companies ultimately don't repay the money and the tax payers suffer the loss while any profit is kept by the government

OK, since it is the taxpayers who are bailing out GM then divide the amount of money we are investing into GM by the amount of citizens and give the citizens stock in return :)

I was refering to the public owning government bought shares of GM to be socialism.

The bailout was not really socialism. It was interventionist, but the government has no interest or desire in running GM. That's the difference. It was done to save the economy. Despite the claims of socialism, there really is no motivation to do that in this country. Democrats are not socialists, they are actually pro-capitalist. They just want our economy not to completely tank.

They got themselves into this hole.

They've resisted change for workers' / employee's benefits, car safety, energy efficiency...

Part of the problem is that when the economy in general starts to suffer, people are less likely to buy cars. GM and the other auto manufacturers have been slow at adapting to customer preferences, but to a certain extent even if they were much more on the ball they'd have a tough time making a profit in this economic climate.
