  • You could easily get a higher yield by just dumping the glass and chemical in the water. All the chemical would dissolve, and the glass would sink to the bottom, where you can collect it.

  • @LolzICanFly No, the chemical would NOT all dissolve, its mostly insoluble, that's the problem.

  • @NurdRage I thought potassium permanganate was water-soluble. Am I missing something?

  • Can this be done with Manganese dioxide and Potassium chlorate?

  • will I be able to get a high enough purity kmno4 to crystalize it if I use high-purity mno2 achieved through the nurdrage oxone + mnso4 video, and at what temp do the initial chemicals need to be heated to? ie can I use a hotplate or alcohol burner instead of the torch?

  • HI i need KMNo4 but in crystals, i add the carbon bicarbonate, and...? tanks!

  • The vial on the left at 4:21, Is that Manganese Heptoxide (Mn2O7) settling along with other insoluble contaminants?

  • @Khaied345 or permanganic acid?

  • so ur saying that I can make MnO2 by heating KMnO4, decomposing it to K2MnO4, then adding NaHCO3??

  • For those living in Singapore, you can find 100g pure KMnO4 at some Guardian stores and in almost all NTUC UNITY stores. It's in a White plastic container labelled 'Potassium Permanganate Crystals BP'

  • @Khaied345 Hi, in which department of unity is it found at? thx

  • @ChickenWingzz Check at the pharmacy part. It's usually on the small shelves. It's in a small white container. Check carefully because the label is kinda small so it's hard to notice it. The text is in a purple colour. I know two NTUC Unity stores that are in Whitesands Pasir Ris and AMK Hub.

  • @ChickenWingzz Found it, I asked the cashier xD

  • poor glass vial :( i want some too

  • hihi,

    Can I use a stronger oxidizing agent to oxidize MnO2 into MnO4-? I have tried the reaction form Wikipedia 2 MnO2 + 3 NaClO + 2 NaOH → 2 NaMnO4 + 3 NaCl + H2O but I failed. I am now thinking about NaClO3 to replace blench solution. Does it works?

  • hihi,

Can I use a stronger oxidizing agent to oxidize MnO2 into MnO4? I have no idea on it.

  • if i would use the maganese dioxide that u made in ur newest video would i get a higher purity of KMnO4

  • When you say manganese dioxide aren't you naming it as if it's a molecular compound when you use Greek prefixes? Shouldn't you use the stock system to name ionic compounds?

  • Cant i make KNO3 bye mixing K2CO3 (potassium carbonate) with nitric acid???

  • @mcwario13 This video is about making KMnO4, if you want KNO3 check out my videos specifically on making potassium nitrate.

  • Comment removed

  • Where can u find this in a pharmacy..?

  • what exactly do you use all of your chemicals for other than great informative videos?

  • Is it possible to substitute Potassium Nitrate and Potassium Hydroxide with Sodium Nitrate and Sodium Hydroxide?

  • I bought pure 100g of KMnO4 at a local Pharmacy for S$7.50 (USD$5.767)

  • @Khaied345 where do you live? i wanna live there!

  • @nybotheveg Singapore. You can buy it in NTUC Unity(Singapore only) and Guardian (International I think).

  • @Khaied345 U can buy it at watsons also in singapore... i bought it from there from sgd 7.50 as well :)

  • Comment removed

  • @supernova143 which watsons outlet? I never found any so far at watsons.

  • @nybotheveg Singapore has extremely strict laws on chemical availability. I haven't managed to get my hands on simple ammonia and potassium nitrate. However, it is unique as when we lose some, we gain some and we can get chemicals you cannot, like KMnO4.

  • @Khaied345 u live in singapore? so do I!

  • Comment removed

  • @NurdRage ofcourse I have :P I absolutely loved this though. Interesting to see the method to break it all down- and the end result is just fantastic! Just added that comment for people who want to mix it with other chemicals to ignite it cheaply.. Thoroughly enjoyed it though man :)

  • @josh2dude2 ah gotcha :)

  • @NurdRage can i obtain pure crystals if i used lab grade manganese dioxide? and i see from your vials that there's some solid material in the permanganate solution, can it be filtered?

  • OR you can pay $3.98 at the local chemist and buy a batch,,,

  • @USArcAngel117 I think you completely and totally missed the point of learning stuff.

  • which tor ch you are using sir tell me please

  • this is really really asome

  • here is my tool hehehehe

  • one of the hardest experiments on this channel :p

  • NurdRage I like your knowledge... could the glass be heated with a heat gun instead of a flame ????

  • @kevp951 where on earth did you get a heat gun??

  • @Khaied345 Ace Hardware here in the USA....but i'm working now on using homemade magnifying glasses to heat, burn, cut and also to purify and distill drinking water. Check out Dan Rohas (where i learned) at his website greenpowerscience and he is here on youtube...he is amazing, just like Nurd Rage !

  • Comment removed

  • Its Tiny!

  • I would have drinked it.

  • You can easily buy Potassium Permanginate at the Chemist or General Hardware store.

  • Can you buy raw sulphur in the US?????

  • @manmachine30 whats that gotta do with his video?

  • @toothpick93 It was just a general question!!! would you be able answer it ????

  • @manmachine30 umm well i live in australia and our laws of buying chemicals are strict... cant even buy potassium nitrate, so with sulfur in the US im pretty sure u could, maybe look in wall mart or just a garden store for the sulfur or you can make it by adding some HCl to Hypo solution....

  • Your IQ must be like 100000000000!!!!!

  • Is the color changing in real time?

  • @threebuddies Sadly, I would bet its sped up. I've seen this reaction a couple of times and it usually proceeds much slower, taking several minutes. Don't take my word for it though, with Dr butyl, anything is possible!

  • @threebuddies yeah it is

  • what is the chemical equation for the chameleon reaction?

  • im gonna subcribe just for my dad he loves science!!!

  • Loved the video!!!

  • I'm sad all your vids I have maybe 1 or 2 of the ingredients but I want to do it:(

  • i know matter and energy cannot be destroyed or created just converted just like chemicals but u find like every single way to convert chemicals into more chemicals that are more useful basically wat im tryin to say is that i look up to u as GOD!

  • in the uk i can buy 1lb of potassium permanganate for £2. They use it for koi fish ponds

  • The hammer. such a useful tool :)

  • here is my tool... heh heh heh... XD

  • hey NurdRage. love your vids. quick question. where do you get your glassware? please reply.

  • its nice to see some one on you tube that knows wtf their talking about

  • so nurd i was fooling around and found that if you mix MnO2 and NaOH and Bleach in proper amounts you get sodium permanganate and sodium clhoride solution

can this be purifier and then turning it to KMnO4 by adding KOH? (yes i already have the NaMnO4 solution :) )

  • Hi,

can we use H2O2 to oxidize MnO2 to form MnO4?

  • "Here is my tool, Hee hee hee."

  • I've already made this solution at home, but my science fair project is to see how different chemicals can affect the outcome of fire colorwise. Is this safe to put in a fire since it is crude? Why or why not? Can I change it so it will be burnable? Please help.

  • @GhrimNitemare look up flame test you can get at least 7 household chems that can change a flames color dont mess with this stuff unless you know what your doing

  • Hi! Have you tryed to crystalize the first KMnO4 obtained from NaHCO3 and test with some glycerol?

    Thanks, good job

  • LOL. i watched this video a few weeks ago...today when i logged on, "how to make cocaine" was in my recomendations because of this xD

  • at 4:14 it looks like marmalade :D

  • Would you recomend the sodium bicarbonate or the sulfuric acid?

  • Can you use Manganese Oxide insted of Dioxide?

  • can we just do a redox reaction with MnO2 and bleach in a basic medium to get MnO2? I tried it on impure battery sludge and got rid of all the graphite. Then When I added excess bleach I obtained a light purple solution

  • could this produce wilderness survival grade pot.perman.? I am referring to it having anti fungal properties as well as would it ignite if mixed with glycerin?

  • it neat isn't it

  • Shouldn't potassium permanganate be a powder, or chunks? I think you would have needed to boil it down.

  • It's a handheld metal banger!!! Did you buy that from bobjenz?

Also, that little chuckle sounded a lot like nighthawkinlight... I'm just sayin'.

  • Your videos always sounds like you took a deep breath of sulfur hexafluoride :D

  • can i use a dessication bag to evaporate the water from the potassium permanganate solution

(it will leave behind the dry crystals of KMnO4) ????

  • Do you have to use a hammer?

  • pottasium permanganate is hard to get crystals of because so much will dissolve it is just difficult stuff

  • here is my tool!!! lol

  • at the end of the video you perform a "chameleon" reaction, is there a way to reverse it?

  • Hey nurdrage? what is the reaction for the decomposition of KNO3?

I've had some say that it decomposes to potassium nitrite, potassium nitrate (which doesn't make sense) or even potassium oxide. Which one is correct?

  • @IchigoMitsukai Potassium nitrate has an orthorhombic crystal structure at room temperature, which transforms to a trigonal system at 129 °C. Upon heating to temperatures above 560 °C, it decomposes into potassium nitrite, generating oxygen: 2 KNO3 → 2 KNO2 + O2

    -from wikipedia

  • Would you get ammonium permanganate if you use ammonium nitrate instead of potassium nitrate?

  • this potassium permanganate solution. But how i can make potassium permanganate crystal ?

i want make crystal potassium permanganate?plzz tell me about ?

  • So far so good nurdrage, what about chemistry with other available chemicals,ie mg from mgso4,or ethene from ethanol, how about purifying home made ethanol to lab grade after distillation,or a few extractions, eugenol from cloves,or even messing with the porphryn ring from chlorophyll from spinach,or naphthalene rxns.Or extracting tiO2 from paint. The chemistry using readily available ingredients is cheaper and usually greener, than what's done in the lab.The hypochlorite oxidation of rubbing alcohol

  • Do you know bill nye

  • I like your videos, however I remember many years ago salvaging manganese dioxide from batteries for use in oxygen mixture. I found out by accident that the battery I chose had carbon mixed in the with dioxide, and that heated with potassium chlorate resulted in a explosion that was lucky not to take my face off....

Since then I have never trusted any manganese dioxide unless its been torched on a tray under a bunsen for an hour :)

  • First I want to say that I like you's video. But in second I wold have ask you abot this:

Can I make potassium nitrate from ptassium permanganate?Because here is not potassium chloride in the shops. There is only potassium permanganate. Thanks in advaise.

  • Do you know the equation for the chemical chameleon reaction? I did the experiment myself and did some tests on the products and determined that one of them is MnO2, but I'm not sure of the rest. I've never been able to find an equation anywhere.

  • which toxic gas is produced? NO NO2?

  • well that was interesting i work in a maganeese refinery we make all of that plus more

  • heheh, oxidizing the manganese to reduce it again at the end :P

but I get the point, and it´s always very interesting to watch these videos. Thanks for sharing your knowledge =)

  • is there a way i can metathesize sodium hydroxide into potassium hydroxide using potassium nitrate or potassium chloride? i would like to try this experiment but i cant find potassium hydroxide.

  • It can be obtained by electrolyzing potassium chloride... but that takey forever and also produces chlorates and what not.

Potassium carbonate (Potash), when dissolved in water forms potassium hydrogen carbonate and KOH (but don´t ask me how to get rid of the HCO3, sorry)

  • @sciencoking

i might buy some but i thought it would be cooler to make it.

i have a chlorate cell. mmo coated titanium anode with a stainless steel cathode. i also have a 50lb bag of kcl for it so i dont run out.

  • oh cool =)

but unfortunately i can´t think of any other way than making it by electrolysis or reacting its salts with an even stronger base, which would be extremely useless, dangerous and expensive.

  • @sciencoking thanks for the help. i searched all over the internet and so far, your the most help.

  • always good to know that someone appreciates my help ;-)

if i come up with a more efficient method, i´ll tell you!

  • @sciencoking thanks!

  • if i use sodium nitrate instead of KNO3,

    do i get NaMnO4.

  • he said directly in the video that you cant

  • @japanesepoptart

he said that you will not get KMnO4

  • @TheScienceTestTV

no, he sais the reaction will not work

  • hahaha,evil laugh.

the white hexagonal dish broke at 2:43

  • I made a smoke bomb with this stuff when I was younger and it make pretty purple colors but almost caused a grassfire lol

  • Very cool and very well done.

  • Can I crystallize it ?

  • could adding too much sulfuric acid eventually cause the formation of manganese heptoxide?

  • Would it work if you use bunsen burner or a hot plate to melt the potassium nitrate/manganese dioxide mixture, or are the higher temperatures from the torch needed?

  • @outlawcfh

Yeah it needs to be high temperature, i couldn't get it to work otherwise.

  • Hmmm. Hope i can avoid thermal shock. I'd hate to have flying glass on top of chemicals. Thanks, I appreciate the response.

  • @NurdRage doesnt heating decompose the permanganate?

  • @smokescreenninjato also i read that it can be made by fusing the Manganese dioxide w/ potassium hydroxide then heating in air and then using electrolytic oxidation in an alkaline solution to convert from manganate to permanganate, from Wiki so not sure of accuracy

  • I learned to spot potassium permanganate because it sounds like Pomegranate and its purple like a pomegranate

  • excellent video, congrats!

  • my parents went to russia and got pure manganese

  • Due to Manganese(IV)oxide

In german its called "Braunstein" brownstone so you can guess where the name comes from.

As pure solid it looks fully black, but in this case you've got the substance fine spread in solution

  • that was cool when it changed diffrent color how do you do that????????????

  • Its caused by the different oxidizing states of the manganese

  • Hi Dr N butyl, first of all, i just want to express my respet for you , and I really like your videos, so want to ask you something about this procedure. You got a solution of KMnO4 right?, what will you do if you want to ge Potassium permangananate solid?? exist any process to do that???

  • @jehosafath

the procedure in the video is a quick/dirty/easy method of making it, but the product is terribly bad and nearly impossible to purify. I'm currently working on better methods and i'll post a video when i have them.

  • Dr N Butyl thansk for answer my recently question. So I hope your investigation or your procedure for to get KMnO4 solid very soon.

On the other hand, I just want to ask you, about a procedure to get Potassium chlorate without electrolysis. It is possible? , so in internet I read a process named hypochlorites termical descomposition, did you ever heard before????

  • 2:21 XD brutal tool lol

  • Would a recrystalisation procedure like in your other video work to purify the KMnO4?

  • What's the science behind the sodium bicarbonate behaving as an acid and neutralizes the potassium manganate?

  • that tool joke was funny i was laugfing so hard i fell out of my chair

  • PROTIP; Washing the mixture with water will dissolve the ammonium chlorate.

The manganese compounds will precipitate to the bottom,

And the carbon will float to the top!

  • if i were make sodium manganate with sodium hydroxide and MnO2, then displace the sodium with a potassium salt then oxidise the potassium manganate as you show, would that work?

  • it should...

  • Listen at 1:52

  • I got that far. just wanted to see if that's what he meant. Do you know?

  • Sodium mangonate compounds are much less stable than potassium mangonate

  • hey brother jon , how do you get sodium hydroxide in a product form? here in Malaysia we dont tend to have many chemistry store nor can we order online because of custom regulations...... peace

  • here is my tool heh heh heh....

    so cheesy but awesome

  • so i take it that i cant mix this with glycerine huh

  • Special tool, lol.

  • Its funny I figured out how to make permaganate like 30 minutes before watching this video. Wiki is awesome I just moved back and forth through manganese chemicals till I figured it out. but do you know if you can complete the oxidation with out the added nitrate using just atmosphere air? wiki says its done, but I think it probably takes longer.

  • can u make a video of how 2 get potassium nitrate out of potassium permanganate.... is its possible.....

  • That was really pretty

  • It is good to see you preparing KMnO4 solution in this way, but solution of KMnO4 actually has limited usage that we can't do much on that. Preparing crystal of KMnO4 require even harder work.

  • Of course it wouldn't work with sodium hydroxide; it would eat a hole right through the glass.

  • Comment removed

  • special tool LOL

  • i may just be a highschool chem student but i like the NurdRage vids and i want to know if any of them are simple so i can convince my chem teacher to let me try them. they must also be fairly cheap to do.

  • Well, so there are no problems if I'll put all together? I've bought manganese dioxide, so it's really pure...

  • i didn't try it with pure manganese dioxide so i don't know how well it would work.

I only did the experiments with contaminated manganese dioxide from the batteries.

  • did you wash the MnO2 since it is not soluble in water a lot of the contaminates will be washed away leaving a higher purity Mn02. and if the battery was brand new possibly a very pure dioxide

  • @knowlagable

didn't bother, if a preparation works, I don't add extra steps if they don't do anything more.

  • any chance of a tutorial on how to make potassium perchlorate? thanks

  • Comment removed

  • But before that a tutorial on how to create Pb ions from Pb to be used for electroplating the electrodes you require to get KClO4 cheaply.

PbO2 Electrodes are Highly resistant to corrosion and for the home chemist the cheapest Electrodes to make given you have a solution of Lead

  • Another thing...

Why didn't you mixed KOH with MnO2 and KNO3 at first, but you have added it after the others were molten?

  • I tried it many different ways, including the one you mentioned,

The way in the video just seemed to work better and was more reliable. Probably because the battery chemicals are contaminated.

  • Great video!!

I have a question for you...

Can we electrolize the potassium manganate K2MoO4 in order to get potassium permanganate KMnO4 instead using acids or alkaline solutions?

In this way KOH is produced but it rest in the solution, because the solubility of potassium permanganate is much less than this... Is this a good method to obtain purified cristals of this salt?

  • to be honest, I don't know,

i'm told it can be done that way. But I myself have never tried it and thus don't know the difficulties and issues that might arise. If you can successfully perform such a reaction then let me know! :)

  • Ah ok!

I'll try when I'll have potassium hydroxide (next week)... The rest is not a metter. I'll tell you my result!
