I try to find as many key locations as possible before I enter Megaton (provided I find enough supplies to keep me alive before I have to actually PURCHASE any), which is to say, areas that will make it possible for me to fast travel to early in the game. Hiring the caravan merchants to expand their inventory in Canterbury Commons early in the game is a good idea...being that they provide the HIGHEST repair skill of ANY other merchants in the Capitol Wasteland once you do this.

just like Fallout: New Vegas can't you just follow the highway as much as possible? seen as it's not in the wild? and enemies stay clear of it? i have done that on Fallout. 3 a couple of times and i did reach to my desired locations just fine.

I ADVISE that BEFORE you leave Megaton go behind Megaton; there you will find a vaguely round rock closely surrounded by three short, branchless trees. Inside this hollowed rock is a Sniper rifle (in bad condition), five .308 rounds, a Stealth Boy, and 2 Stimpacks (along with a descriptive note). This should be your back-up plan for a surprise group of Super Mutants.

Well, I followed your guide step by step. I had some moles jump out at me as I was passing by Megatron. Pulled them back to the robot who killed them, then tried again. Got in a bit of trouble with 3 dogs!!! AHHHHH!!! lol I just kept running and kept the faith. They eventually gave up the chace after a few nibbles. Thanks for the guide. I just picked up the game and its nice to get that help that most ppl found would be easier after investing countless hours. Cheers!
