Excellent song, actually my first record ever. I was 3, in Paris at the time. I recall every single note and feel a lot of emotion. It is this very version, the cover was purple, writing was in white. Still picture it ! God, it still sounds pretty damn good !
Roger Whitaker also did a good cover(both in french and german).
This is how I got to know the song, stil love it today. As for roger he has a special place in my heart as he sang some great songs in multiple languages. And his whistling is superb.
The song was written by Frenchman Hubert Giraud. Joel Dayde had the first hit with it in France & he later recorded an english version that did well in Australia. Roger Whittacker also had a hit in England at about the same time. The song was then picked up by a spanish group called Los Pop Tops.
A number of other people have recorded the song including Julio Iglesias & Celine Dion.
'Mamy Blue' was written by Frenchman Hubert Giraud. He got the idea for it in a traffic jam apparently! After that, the sequence of events is unclear. At some point Giraud sent it to an Italian producer and it was recorded by 16-year old Ivana Spagna. Joel Dayde picked it up and had a hit with it in France and so too did Nicoletta.
Meantime Los Pop Tops' Phil Trim got hold of it and wrote English lyrics for it, and had a minor hit in US and UK. Joel Dayde's English version went to #3 in Australia, and Roger Whittaker had a UK hit with it too. It's hard to establish who first had a hit with it, because most of these versions charted around the same time (late '71). I guess one thing is certain - the first person to actually sing it was Hubert Giraud in that fateful traffic jam!
Sorry,I knew the producer for Pop Tops,who also produced "Black is Black"by Los Bravos ..
Pop Tops did the original version and outsold everybody worldwideexcept France,USA,where The Stories did a version and the UK .
The mistake the producer made is to play it for other producers in the recording complex,they immediately copied the idea..there is nothing he could do.

'Mamy Blue' was written by Frenchman Hubert Giraud. He got the idea for it in a traffic jam apparently! After that, the sequence of events is unclear. At some point Giraud sent it to an Italian producer and it was recorded by 16-year old Ivana Spagna. Joel Dayde picked it up and had a hit with it in France and so too did Nicoletta.

Meantime Los Pop Tops' Phil Trim got hold of it and wrote English lyrics for it, and had a minor hit in US and UK. Joel Dayde's English version went to #3 in Australia, and Roger Whittaker had a UK hit with it too. It's hard to establish who first had a hit with it, because most of these versions charted around the same time (late '71). I guess one thing is certain - the first person to actually sing it was Hubert Giraud in that fateful traffic jam!

Sorry,I knew the producer for Pop Tops,who also produced "Black is Black"by Los Bravos ..
Pop Tops did the original version and outsold everybody worldwideexcept France,USA,where The Stories did a version and the UK .
The mistake the producer made is to play it for other producers in the recording complex,they immediately copied the idea..there is nothing he could do.

Nicoletta recorded it after Hubert Giraud realised Alain Milhaud was making a hit with it!
That's why Pop Tops lost France..
But POP TOPS outsold everybody worlwide.
