Can't comment on the VW, but I've owned a 2008 CR-V (same generation as the 2011) and now own a 2011 RAV4 4-cylinder. The CR-V has a nicer interior, but it's a slug on the highway and nowhere as practical as the RAV. The Toyota is smoother, has better power and throttle response, handles better and is just a more practical vehicle all around.
Although Volkswagen is suppose to be a conventional and affordable automobile manufacturer, I always felt they seemed more upscale then your average Toyota or Honda.
You state the the Rav 4 is the most bland, uses a V6, has bad brakes and steering feel?
And still choose it number one? So Sick of Toyota spending "All" they're money on buying these media giants, like Edmunds & consumer reports.

Why is 0-60, slalom handling, and a V6 important to a small SUV? If you want to haul lots of cargo or pull a large trailer, move to a mid-sized SUV. If you want to run slaloms, buy a sport's car. Wouldn't the top things a family would be looking for be something like safety, mileage, comfort, and interior space? Individual sensibilities fine, but give some thought to who the market is.

this review is bull. my parents were considering a brand new tiguan sel 4motion that was $29,000. they found nothing wrong with it. they both didn't even look at a rav-4 because they thought it looked old and ugly.
@brucenash if you still don't get it. they are comparing based on what you can get for the price. since for similar pricing you can get a v6, they included the v6 rav4 in this video. its a way to prove that the rav4 offers more for the similar amount of money.
@mjeatsies I have a cr-v btw and the advantage it has over the rav4 is the rear lift gate swings up, seats are higher so your legs do not sag so much on the floor. and the is probably to most better looking than the rav4 and maybe even the tiguan. the crv isn't fast accelerating but it has adequate power for what it does.
@brucenash i get 24-25 mpg combined. so that's not so bad considering its a compact suv. and honestly unless you have an electric car or something, you still use gas so 1 or 2 mpg isn't that big of a difference. prius uses a lot of resource for its battery so i'm still not sure about that. but otherwise 50 mpg sounds really good.
All three of the cars are great...although the Tiguan shows more luxury to itself, the honda has a sporty design and rav4 (not available in my country yet, though through my first impression) looks good as daily use car.

CrV IMO is the best looking, probably most fun just to sit in, better handling and better reliability/built than the other two. Plust its the most reasonable pricetag of the three 29k loaded thats amazing and its probably cheapest to maintain. I dont need the Ravs V6, 7.3 0-60 you will never need that, though that is crazy quick for a SUV.
@enemay Hey try driving one of the V6 RAV4's. I never thought much of it. But after 1 test drive, we bought it on the spot. It's quicker than my 2008 Honda Civiv SI. Very Quick out of the hole. Try it, before you put it down.
@kingcab93 civic si is faster. trust me. you probably aren't driving it right if the v6 rav4 can beat your si. the si not only weighs like 1000 pounds less but has a smooth 6 speed and can get 0-60 in about 6 if you do it right.

Insideline said they're comparing the HIGHEST EQUIPED models. It's not Toyota's fault that they have a V6 in their higher end model. Had Honda had a V8 CRV, you wouldn't be bitching.
The fact that the Rav4 V6 gets the same gas mileage as the 4cylinder CRV tells you that the Toyota is better engineered and more efficient.

First it's the most fun to drive, next it's better built than the others, faster than others 4cyl, most confortable, quieter, most equipped, most luxurious, got the best AWD system and is the safest. Also, its the one that handles best.
Volkswagon is always expensive so I won't even bother with that. But even the CRV, the cheapest of the bunch is still a ridiculous price in my opinion. All I know is for that same price I can get a nice verstile 4 wheel drive Silverado with some stuff in it for that same price.
The CRV's offroad capability is the lamest. The Tiguan is nothing special. Any car with all wheel drive can do that. Heck a comparison between the Rav4, Tiguan and Escape shows the Tiguan having the worst performance on a slippery road and with the Rav4 being the best.
The Rav4 is also the only one with a locking diff that anyone who knows what off-roading will tell you shits all over the VW.

This outdated review is BIZARRE! I test drove all three vehicles back to back on the same day, No question, the engine, ride and fit and finish of the Tiguan is hands down better! Check out the feedback from 2010 owners of all 3 SUV's. Although the Tig requires premium gas and is 3 thousand more expensive, this German made SUV is superior!

If I want a car for the city or just on road, I'd buy a Van or a State Wagon...if I want an SUV, I want it to do some off road, without feeling that it may get broken.
The only one from that list with real off road capabilities is the Tiguan. The 4-Motion traction system is superior to non-intelligent CRV system (it gets crazy when more than one wheel loses traction) or the useless 4wd system from Rav4.The 4-Motion system is able to deliver all power to the specific wheel or wheels with traction, like the Subaru's Symmetrical AWD. Besides that, I like the refinement level on the Tiguan, especially the model with Panoramic SunRoof.

All others uses the Haldex system...since the Haldex system takes just a seventh of the wheel spin or less to react, it is very efficient for Midsize SUVs or Crossovers. VW also uses Torsen on the Passat 4motion. Anway, Torsen system is also for RWD, FWD or AWD. Everything depends on the applications and desired results. Who the hell you think you are talking to?

You are correct in saying that the Tiguan is not in the same league as the Honda and the Toyota, wait until you get the service bill for the Tiguan, it really is in a higher league. Check out the cost of brake pads and the timing belt for the Tiguan. Nicer car but way more expensive to own than the other two.
so I am guessing that none of the people that are bashing the Tiguan have not seen the test vids for the euro spec Tiguan or you probably would not be talking bad on a can designed in Germany then stripped for the American market where all we want in car a car is an appliance, like a toaster, to get us to work. VWoA needs to put that 160hp 2.0 TDI CR engine from the GTD/Passat TDI into the Tiguan. The gas engine is the wrong engine choice for this kind of car.
The Rav4 just destroys all of them. The V6 Rav4 does the 0-60 in 6.4 seconds (see Motorweek's review). The Tiguan is too small and all it is is just a rabbit on stilts. The CRV is a slow sad mini suv. The folding rear seat eats up so much cargo space. The Rav gets the best mpg despite having the largest engine. The Rav also has the largest cargo capacity and offers a 3rd row seating.

The Rav4 has a flat floor when the rear seats are folden, not the CRV. The rear seat leaves a huge hump on the floor. The Rav4 can come with a 3rd row, not the CRV. However the CRV doesn't have the side opening doors of the Rav. Rav4 & CRV = too close to call. Tiguan = waste of money.

I rode in the 09 CR-V and the ride was brutal. The seats were highly uncomfortable and the cabin was really noisy. Honda needs to add more cushioning to the seats.

@mjeatsies I have a cr-v btw and the advantage it has over the rav4 is the rear lift gate swings up, seats are higher so your legs do not sag so much on the floor. and the is probably to most better looking than the rav4 and maybe even the tiguan. the crv isn't fast accelerating but it has adequate power for what it does.

@brucenash i get 24-25 mpg combined. so that's not so bad considering its a compact suv. and honestly unless you have an electric car or something, you still use gas so 1 or 2 mpg isn't that big of a difference. prius uses a lot of resource for its battery so i'm still not sure about that. but otherwise 50 mpg sounds really good.

CrV IMO is the best looking, probably most fun just to sit in, better handling and better reliability/built than the other two. Plust its the most reasonable pricetag of the three 29k loaded thats amazing and its probably cheapest to maintain. I dont need the Ravs V6, 7.3 0-60 you will never need that, though that is crazy quick for a SUV.

Insideline said they're comparing the HIGHEST EQUIPED models. It's not Toyota's fault that they have a V6 in their higher end model. Had Honda had a V8 CRV, you wouldn't be bitching.
The fact that the Rav4 V6 gets the same gas mileage as the 4cylinder CRV tells you that the Toyota is better engineered and more efficient.

The CRV's offroad capability is the lamest. The Tiguan is nothing special. Any car with all wheel drive can do that. Heck a comparison between the Rav4, Tiguan and Escape shows the Tiguan having the worst performance on a slippery road and with the Rav4 being the best.
The Rav4 is also the only one with a locking diff that anyone who knows what off-roading will tell you shits all over the VW.

This outdated review is BIZARRE! I test drove all three vehicles back to back on the same day, No question, the engine, ride and fit and finish of the Tiguan is hands down better! Check out the feedback from 2010 owners of all 3 SUV's. Although the Tig requires premium gas and is 3 thousand more expensive, this German made SUV is superior!

The only one from that list with real off road capabilities is the Tiguan. The 4-Motion traction system is superior to non-intelligent CRV system (it gets crazy when more than one wheel loses traction) or the useless 4wd system from Rav4.The 4-Motion system is able to deliver all power to the specific wheel or wheels with traction, like the Subaru's Symmetrical AWD. Besides that, I like the refinement level on the Tiguan, especially the model with Panoramic SunRoof.

@TheEuroperules BTW, Torsen is only for car with transverse-mounted engines...Not all Audi models has it...only certain models. All others uses the Haldex system...since the Haldex system takes just a seventh of the wheel spin or less to react, it is very efficient for Midsize SUVs or Crossovers. VW also uses Torsen on the Passat 4motion. Anway, Torsen system is also for RWD, FWD or AWD. Everything depends on the applications and desired results. Who the hell you think you are talking to?

You are correct in saying that the Tiguan is not in the same league as the Honda and the Toyota, wait until you get the service bill for the Tiguan, it really is in a higher league. Check out the cost of brake pads and the timing belt for the Tiguan. Nicer car but way more expensive to own than the other two.

so I am guessing that none of the people that are bashing the Tiguan have not seen the test vids for the euro spec Tiguan or you probably would not be talking bad on a can designed in Germany then stripped for the American market where all we want in car a car is an appliance, like a toaster, to get us to work. In Europe that car is a very good car that is sporty and gets as high a 59MPG. go look at the VW UK web site.

Please give us a link PROOVING your claim of a 59mpg Tiguan. From what I'm seeing, a diesel Tiguan gets mid 40mpgs using a diesel engine, something a DIESEL Rav4 is ALREADY doing.
The Rav4 is a vehicle on it's OWN chasis. It wasn't put together from the same cookie cutter used from the VW Rabbit like the Tiguan.

The Rav4 put out more power and uses less gas despite having a larger engine. Only a moron would expect an SUV to handle like a race car just like I don't expect an M3 to on the Rubicon. The Tiguan is the one that handles like shit. It's "advanced" traction control system couldn't keep the Rabbit on stilts driving straight on a wet track.

The Tiguan does NOT have a locking center diff like the Rav4. The only offroading your Tiguan will do is driving over your mother's lawn.

VWoA needs to put that 160hp 2.0 TDI CR engine from the GTD/Passat TDI into the Tiguan. The gas engine is the wrong engine choice for this kind of car.

The Rav4 just destroys all of them. The V6 Rav4 does the 0-60 in 6.4 seconds (see Motorweek's review). The Tiguan is too small and all it is is just a rabbit on stilts. The CRV is a slow sad mini suv. The folding rear seat eats up so much cargo space. The Rav gets the best mpg despite having the largest engine. The Rav also has the largest cargo capacity and offers a 3rd row seating.
Try again VW. Wake up Honda.

@dougdangger Try again VW ? Its the most fun to drive, fastest around corners, more equipped and better looking than the others. Plus, on snow or wet road the Tiguan simply feels and drive better than the Toyota and Honda.

Looks again is subjective. IMO, the Rav4 looks like a masculine truck, specially with the wide fenders while the Tiguan looks like a VW Rabbit on stilts. The Rav4 handles better on slippery surfaces. There's a video on youtube, look it up. The Rav4 has a center locking diff, not the Tiguan, so it has better capblty

The RAV4 does not handles better, the Tiguan with the new AWD system actually has more traction on snow/ice or whatever slippery surface. The video you saw on Youtube is complete bullshit, Toyota paid for it.

Fun to drive its not subjective, there are NO review that say the Toyota is better to drive than the Volkswagen, and even thought an SUV isnt a sports car, doesnt mean it has to handle like SHIT like the Toyota does.

@mrbigtime81 You can't go wrong with the Rav4 or the CRV. If you get the Rav4 V6, it'll slaughter the CRV hands down. The Toyota with the V6 gets the SAME MPG as the 4cyl Honda. The Rav4 has a flat floor when the rear seats are folden, not the CRV. The rear seat leaves a huge hump on the floor. The Rav4 can come with a 3rd row, not the CRV. However the CRV doesn't have the side opening doors of the Rav. Rav4 & CRV = too close to call. Tiguan = waste of money.

I rode in the 09 CR-V and the ride was brutal. The seats were highly uncomfortable and the cabin was really noisy. Honda needs to add more cushioning to the seats.
