Great idea, really great idea, but instead of selecting the musicians themselves the filmmakers should have simply jumped into the subway and filmed. That is, capture what is already there ... the people who are there ... why they are there ... a film with a voice of authenticity. That would require much more of an observational doc that a "reality" show.
