I discovered this CD in 1993 when I was 19. My dad has just died and my girlfriend had broken up with me... yet somehow Mr Simon's music (which I had not even heard before) carried me through those difficult times. Thanks for posting this wonderful video.
can't tell you how many times I watched this VHS back in probably like 1995. had every lick and subtlety of that drum solo memorized from watching it so much. such a great performance... thanks for posting!
I started liking this song as soon as i found out about it, wich was when my dad had a CD and we were listening to it in the car. i like this song because of my parents
, "...As if everybody here would know just what I was talking about"
I think it refers to poor black miners trying to smuggle out diamonds, stuck to the bottom of their shoes (and in body cavities), trying to get past the aggressive exit inspections of the white mine operators.
this song remind's me of when i was a young boy and me and my dad were a lot closer than we are now and it takes me back to happier times by the way paul simon is a pure genius and all his song's are pure musical magic..:)
where can i get the V D O of the whole concert ..any links or anything..and i dont think the bass player in this concert is bakithi kumalo..its some other guy.
You're right, it isn't Bakithi, the glimpse of the bass player is so fleeting I hadn't noticed- it some young guy copping his licks -not as good as the original, I hope you agree!!
hi marisa and sledge - the DVD documentary graceland is available from eaglevision online store. The bass player is Bakithi Kumalo and on the DVD he shows you how he invented and plays 2 of the best licks on the Graceland album.
Does anybody know name or location of documentary about Paul Simon recording this album? Saw it on television years ago. He and others told about recording and it showed fragments of them recording...
About the concert Simon solo (European tour)of 9 July 2008
QUOTE : "Paul Simon, it is within the framework of Simon & Garfunkel miracle, vocal permanent, that he has reached these summits. This must be hard, sometimes, to have affected the legend and to have chosen to be more then « that » an excellent songwriter..."
Swissinfo, Bernard Léchot à Montreux
Paul, the people he loves you recalling Simon & Garfunkel. Why not you agree to be great with Art?
Paul Simon and Bob Marley...truly the only people I'd ever want to shake hands with. I'm at ease w/ not being to be able to meet one of them. Paul Simon has done what very, very few musicians can do...relate on such a high level for so many to what can bring people of all races together!!! Let loose and jam.
I have Portuguese but I can't hear a word of what he is saying. Maybe he is shouting to the wife...don't forget to put GARLIC in the stew ? I'll be hungry after the show.
what an awesome song! Specially this live-version is simply greate! I love his music and also the band (Steve Gadd on drums - perfect ^^) is amazing! To me Paul Simon is the best musician alive.
MY mom told me about the '60s. Mostly she taught me through the music and Paul Simon was always a big part of it all. I never would have ever known this awesome music, then and now, w out her.
Whenever I listen to this song. I'm always thinking of being just outside a camp fire and right in front of the fire, there's this girl just swaying along to the music that's being played buy a row of guys behind the fire playing music. Any song that gives me that can't of a picture must be good. Not also to the fact that the harmonies are awesome, it's refreshing, the guitar part's great and AFRICA!
this is about the diamind workers in the mines of South Africa; meaning that she has diamonds~~~while she is working, diamonds get stuck to the soles of her shoes, otherwise she is stuck in deep deep poverty. It is a bit of poetic irony he was using to say something about the mine workers there
yea...but also, he said himself that its ironic because she has diamonds where noone will see them thats how rich she is, and its just the way she walks and act...then he says he gets diamonds on the soles of his shoes, he changes his perspective
I believe it was closer to 1 million (folks were outside the park farther than the eye can see in this clip)and i was up front. We got to the park before 6 AM and it was worth it. No one sat down from the opening chord, even though we'd been waiting over twelve hours for the show to start. I have hardly ever felt such energy and i've been to a lot of concerts.
