one thing they got wrong, the Bismark scuttled herself after all of her main guns and everything else on her deck had be demolished, she had no where to go, and nothing to fight with

the service time sort well of couse it was sunk not a very fair way of rating ships relly is it if the germans had a 100 yaer old rowing boat would it get in the top 10

@LastOFSpartans Yea the yamata wasn't that good of a ship. It had 18, 16, and 15 inch guns but it and its twin were sunk by ships that had been damaged at pearl harbor which had light weaponry in comparison
@MagnumPI4 first, its spelled Yamato, and it had 18 inch guns, but no 16 or 15 inch guns. Also, Yamato and Musashi were not sunk by ships raised at Pearl Harbor. They were sunk by carrier aircraft.
@weirdguy7 im almost 100% sure the yamato had 16 inch guns complimenting the 18 inchers. And the pearl harbor ships did have a part in taking out the yamato and the musashi
It's interesting that the Hood and the Bismark had the same main arnament, eifgr fifteen inch guns. This series rates Hood's firepower as low but Bismark's as high. I wonder why.
@Steve17010 it wasnt the same gun it had different caliber, reloading and aiming mechanisms. plus the Hood's guns were at least 20 yrs older than the bismark's guns and they werent refitted before or during the WW2
Low protection? WTF?! This ship took more than 400 hits in its final battle and even then didn't sink! It was Captain Lindemann who gave order to abandon ship and then sink her so she wouldn't be salvaged.
Actually, Pramboy09 is correct. The AA on Bismark class were aimed using primative analogue lead computing systems. The slow speed of the Swordfish could not be "programed" in by the crew.
the narrator of course mentioned that bismarck was hitler's favorite ship, that may be true, but hitler didn't really like ships himself, he became seasick during his visit on board bismarck when she was docked in port!
Hitler was an ignorant asshole all round, he didn't understand how to use a navy and was just as useless with the luftwaffe and left a man even more useless in goering in charge.
Yeah he was just a coward, and the scum of the earth. Definitely one the worst human being to ever live and the ultimate icon of evil. You dont execute millions of innocent people only because ther jewish.
Hitler was actually quite smart when it came to military strategy. Britain was twice on the verge of defeat. First was the Battle of Britain/ Operation Eagle Strike, where the Germans changed their tactics which allowed the British to survive. Too long to elaborate so look it up. Second, on NAVAL warfare. Germany had Britain basically on their knees! The entire nation was a week away from starvation. Also Hitler was an amazing leader. Bad moral compass though!
He was smart. He just made a few mistakes. As well as Japan. If Japan didn't attack Pearl Harbour it is quite possible the US would never have joined the war. Plus, please tell me how an idiot or otherwise unintelligent being could convince the entire world that he was not doing anything bad aka invading another country, building up an army/navy/air force. Plus he brought his country out of a depression. Plus he convinced his whole nation to rally behind him.
@nezzy14 My statment still stands. People knew he was evil but were to scared to do anything about it until they started threatening their own country.
I'm afraid I have to agree with nezzy14 here, hitler was no idoit, i mean come on you cant get to the position of dictator of an entire country by being a fool, he was an excellent politician
On the other hand he was largely a military incompotent, which is why germany lost the war,,,he did have SOME talent as a military man but he wasnt as good as he thought he was and he just couldnt get his round that
protection must be weak?!?! not many battleships could stand 16" shells from 700m and not be pierced.. in fact the shockwave made by the main guns of Bismarck were so powerful that they knocked Bismarcks radar dead during its first engagement with the norfolk and suffolk
I persume you mean the armour couldn't be pieced when you said at 700m it could not be pieced? The reason why is that the british battleships were to close and just put holes through the superstrcture which isn't going to sink her. They should have parked them selves a few kilometres out and used plunging gunfire and that would have cause alot more damage to her.
Innovasion is low fairly, it was just a remake of an old WW1 Bayern class BB.
However service length is BS, it should not even be a matter.
Protection is low fairly, even North Carolina BB was quite superior to Bismarck, and Bismarck could not defend itself against pathetic biplane aircfart...
Protection gets a low score because Bismarck had rather a weak anti-aircraft defence, his armour also was not anything special - same as on a Scharnhorst.. Innovation? Discuss able.. Service length is not a 'fair' criteria at all...
AA guns were not weak - in fact, in comparison to other battleships of that era, Bismarck was well-equipted with AA protection. The problem was aircraft used against it- German AA guns were not designed to shoot biplanes- here only machine gun can help. That is why so many US ships had 0.5 cals as AAs. And the armour was really better than battlecruiser Scharnhorst - much better. The wreck of the Bismarck proves that itself.
The anti aircaft defence they had at time was very good but the problem was AA guns couldn't be calibrated to fire at the swordfish because it was so slow!
No your wrong check your resources, when they designed the AA defences of the bismarck they were designed for shooting down modern monoplane aircraft. The approach of a swordfish is incredibly slow, they couldn't calibrate their guns to account for that.
if it survived it's one and only trip to sea, maybe ,type VII uboat makes this list, the rest of the German navy only died gallently[sharnhost]or hid out Tirpitz
I was thinking the same thing my friend. Sometimes I think these guys are biased, to be honest. If the Bismarck according to them was rated #7.......then which ship was # 1??
The Japanese Yamato must have been #1 if not Bismarck.
well the Bismark for me is formidable battleship...... Bismark=BATTLESHIP...... but why is it in #7??? well the defensive factor against SHIPS are high.....thumbs up...... but the defensive factor against AIRCRAFTS was low...thumbs down......it wasnt sunk mainly by a warship but by AIRCRAFTS...... XD
Indeed, many other Battleships were sunk by aircraft (Arizona, Prince of Wales, Yamato, Roma, Limnos, and Petropavlovsk come to mind), and so were many Carriers, Cruisers, Destroyers, Submarines, etc.
Though the Carrier Lobby always points-out that aircraft were effective against ALL warships, they often fail to mention that Battleships require HUGE air attacks to sink.
Also, carriers don't always beat battleships --- ask the US Navy what happened when the Gambier Bay when it met the Yamato...
Well normally you keep your aircraft carriers far away from enemy battleships, thus battleships normally can't harm an aircraft carrier, whereas the airplanes can destroy em also when the aircraft carrier is still a few hundred miles away.
Of course if enemy warships come close to an aircraft carrier it's lost, e.g. HMS Glorious and its two escorting destroyers were sunk by the German battlecruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau during the Norwegian Campaign.
This is funny-I have to agree with all you...I think that maybe this program was designed for American kids.
I wonder if the original air-time of this program was on a saturday morning in 2002...

@JuanJohnSmith The American Navy already looks good with out any help from this retarded series of top ten shows. They are nearly as bad as VH1 top lists (the kind that had the same instance in both the list of most metal moments in music and the least metal moments in music history).
Is there another navy out there other than the RN that even comes close to matching the power, success, history, or longevity of the United States Navy?
@JuanJohnSmith Well, the American Navy did have the most powerful/hence best equipment ever seen by late 1942-43. If you mean American documentaries are sometimes biased/don't know what the hell they are talking about, yes. That's right. :D But, if you actually dared to compare a Nagato to the South Dakota, or even Nagato Vs the Tennessee, I'd laugh. American ballistics are far superior to anything in the IJN. Only Germany and France game close. Well, the British as well... Except for their BCs.
@ThugCologne I think the Japanese Battleship Yamato is better than any American or European ship. If the Yamato ever fought the Bismark (German), HMS Prince of Wales (UK) or USS Iowa (USA), the Yamato would win.
@fabster1001 not only that it was the fasted heavyest most advanced battleship of all time taking the entire atlantic fleet to sink and sustaining over 200 direct hits without sinking SUPERB ship if not the best
This is kind of retarded. First it's one of the most advanced ships of its time and then all of a sudden scores low for innovation? Not to mention it's still going by the disproven "sunk by torpedo barrage" theory. Innovation and Protection should have been much higher.
Why is it's protection so low the thing took over 3 hours to sink well being attacked by aircraft and i think 3-4 ships, which is just amazing now matter how you put it.
first, the ship was sent on a suicide mission, then her escort was out of action due to mechanical problems, then out of the only few hits she recieved - one of it crippled the rudder...

The rudder was damaged and the crew blew it up.... No other ship at that time could take it on! Biased piece of shit.
