  • I love the dead>I'm no hippie. I'm an active member of the NRA and an avid hunter.I also VOTE. I hold a job I'm an Ironworker I used to go to shows wearing tyedye and camo had a gun in my car most of the time (only had to show it once). was a fan than and still am and I'm old.Just saying. If you notice Jerry would steer clear of politics he for the most part would just smile and skirt the issue when asked. And Pigpen always had a firearm of some sort on him. It's about music not politics

  • @chazmap Glad to see im not one of the only conservative deadheads, while I may only be 18 I am an active member of the NRA, when I turn 21 I'll most likely have a handgun permit and keep a .357 in my car, yet I love the dead to no end. Its true, when asked jerry would always change the subject on politics, he was about the music and the music only.

  • yikes, old people comments!

  • my generation blows the only thing that would make it better is if jerry was still here :)

  • @thebailhimself make it better

  • What a jerk- standing there running the camera while the dog takes that chunky lil babies chocolate! Poor dog is gonna have mud butt now.

  • @Intensitalian i was kind of thinking the same thing...but not mud butt, I have heard that dogs generally die if they eat chocolate. Since I was sort of hoping it wasn't chocolate. But i guess its about enjoyment while you live. I duno.

  • This is kinda bugged out

  • So easy and so good!

  • This is Jack Straw!! Sunshine Daydream is not a song by The Dead, rather its the tag at the end of Sugar Magnolia.

This video rules by the way...

  • @funkadunk4 That is what they named this video.

  • "were changing our name to the sun-stroke serenaders"

  • worlds first pole dancer~:P

  • wow. who's the naked dude.

  • @davethejeweler

He's the high chief on the totem pole.

  • oh my god i love bob weir

  • Right on! Sheait.... do you feel weird?! Thelema!

  • can somebody shed some light on Phil's fucking tone machine? That thing has more knobs than my house

  • @brotherbuttcrack - diff knobs control which sections of wall of sound phil's "sound" would come out of

  • one of the best songs ever written.

  • just dug up this video the whole thing is just so intense but the first part of it where they are erecting the stage was damaged and that part freezes and crashed the computer so I had to jump over that part where they film the mixing of the trips with ken there and such dark star is just intense when they go into the lyrics as the sun sets and such,,, entropy will solve all problems right?

  • i wish i coulda seen jerry. as for now winter 2009 ithaca, buffalo, atlantic city, chicagox2 have done just fine.

  • Nice. this was around the first time I heard/ saw the DEAD, Roosevelt Stadium summer '73. I think this era was such a high point for the Dead

  • I wonder where that guy is today, the guy shaking up on the pole above Jerry, where is he today. These people look like they are feeling No Pain! A freaky trip out dance party, and oh yea, the Grateful Dead.

  • he is currently a member of the House of Representatives

  • i really like the sound with just Bill on drums...this is a really nice vid

  • All due respect to Mickey, I feel like the Dead were a tighter and more comfortable band with one drummer

  • fully agreed.

  • @maccabee36 - world's best kept secret -- Mickey sucked ass

  • @pbl1 oh yeah Mickey sucked ass huh. your right man. one of the dead's drummers for all these years and he sucks.

  • I like the video. The favorite part for me is the same part it is for everyone else-the dog eating the candy bar. Man that dog really wanted that candy bar. Actually it's unhealthy to feed dogs chocolate. It's no good for them. But the scene was hysterical.

And I'm trying to figure out how they did the sound for the film. I don't know much about 16mm. I get the vibe the sound was done separately and then dubbed in. I just don't know.

  • Damn-near took his hand off!!

  • It's funny and touching the way it plays out.

  • Back in those days usually a "crystal synched" Wallensak reel to reel was used to record sound then matched to the film in post production. It was called crystal synch because there was actually a crystal inside the recorder...

    cool

  • What was the audio playing after the band finished Jack Straw?

  • And you are one of them so you know, right? people stop acting like you know what the band thought or what was going. you weren't there.

  • Perfect Answer. Enjoy!

  • That doesn't look like Kreutzmann on the drums...anyone know for sure?

  • definitely . . positively kreutzman

  • never seen this... TY for all of em,,,

  • i like this video because it is old footage my mother was very little when it was filmed we are tremendous bobby fans!!bonita and kelly ives-rodriguez

  • one man gone and another to go my old buddy ur moving much to slow

  • does anybody know if you can buy this whole show on a DVD at all? did they release it at all?

  • This is straight out of Ken Kesey's vault. I'm from Oregon, and the first time I saw this was 25 years ago. The Merry Pranksters should release this!

  • actually there are many pictures of here at Dead shows. Drug Free? who fucking cares. The last 3 presidents of the USA haven't been drug free...

  • The dumb bitch doesn't have a soul to FEEL the music with, fer Godsakes!

  • sun so high the clowds so low the eagals touch the sky

  • LEAVING TEXAS 4th DAY OF JULY!!

  • hahaha shes so full of it!!

the dead would be embarrassed to know she's a fan.

  • Great vid. Really enjoyed it. Thanks for posting!

  • I let dogs lick all my kids when they're toddlers. Makes for a hearty immune system.

  • SEX and DRUGS and ROCK and ROLL!!

The kids will have just as much or as little of a chance as the rest of mankind has had. Light up and lighten up, man.

  • I believe the baby being licked by the dog was Anne Coultier. Poor dog...

  • Brilliant!

  • Beautiful!

  • are u freakin kiddin ezekieloak. you must live under a rock, have you watched the news in the last 10 years, or even watched whats on t.v kids growing up now are gona have it much much harder than any kid who grew up with love all around him, so its ok for parents 2day to get drunk everynight while they are popin all the perscription pills that tha doc gave them, id bet any person who grew up around this is a much better contributer to society then any kid that is growing up right now,

  • ezekieloak, you're generalizing. not all hippies are stoners. and for all we now that baby could have grown up to be a doctor or a lawyer.

  • That looked like a well fed happy baby to me. That dog was so gentle! Not perfect but come on, there is mush worse. ..much much worse.

  • poor baby

  • You need to take a deep breath and do some reading other than right wing rags. Just for your information, canine saliva has far more anti-bodies and less bacteria that human saliva. (due to canines being able to digest and process raw meat) If, on the rare occasion canines pass disease to humans, it is via stools, which need to be ingested.

  • Till the drugs go bad. What the hell does that mean? The computer industry was created by acid heads. The prison industrial ganster industry was created by anti drug laws.

  • go ahead and fuck off you right winged imbesile!!!!

  • @ezekieloak So the moral of the story don't introduce your kids to any music because it ends with damage to their health. HA!

  • Ha, you must be kidding.

  • Little boy and dog=Laugh Riot

  • as a musician i feel that when it comes down to it you can know your chords, your scales, and what not but all that matters is the feeling.. i see all these kids today send out the lightning fast metal riffs.. but that just makes me feel down.. i feel like that can reflect on our society...it shows our society values getting ahead and being better and egotistical. the grateful dead keeps the spirit alive of playing only for feeling, mood, and reflections of a happy relaxing and simple life

  • well put. couldn't agree with you more. you can't beat genuine music like this. things seem extremely contrived in the pop/rock music world of today. you have to look harder for good music such as this now.

  • @oldsoul247 Music is an energy from within, and there is no right or wrong way to express it. I grew up on the Dead, and loved every minate of it. However, I do love my share of loud crazy metal. I sing, and I find the hard rock/metal to be fun to sing, but i still appreciate singing what I grew up on. It takes alot of singing technique to be able to scream without burning your throat out, and it takes a lot of concentration to be able play those chords so fast.

  • @oldsoul247 Pretty straight on. The next generation of guitar players will have no taste.

  • @theatlantisrise Im 18, Jorma koukoen of Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna inspired me to pick up guitar with his "Water Song". I take offense to that, Most wont have any taste but there are a growing number of us who are trying to bring back that sprit. It wont be the same, were a few days away from 40 years past 72, but I play for the music and the love of it, and I think there is a small but growing number of musicians who feel the same way

  • I have this film on DvD

  • how a dead show should be....outside on a sunny afternoon.....

  • Where was Pigpen ? Was he playing here in this show ? I don't see him.

  • Keith was in the band by this point (starting fall '71) - Pigpen's last show was in June of '72 (Hollywood Bowl), he died the next spring.

  • I was born in Russia in 1971, for me the GD and this movie like is truepart of american culture freedom and style of life, but whats is happened today with the US? The Truth looks like Lie,Piece looks like War,Love like Porno and the dream to be Free just like Total control ... we need changes or time machine

  • Whats goin on I went to a concert the other night in Cincinnati, Ohio and you can not have a cigarette with your beer, that town is f'up bad like communism central cops pushed you around and treated you like crap cause you wanted your cig with your beer that town sucks donkey d*****!!!!

  • ohio has asmoking ban

  • This clip is the American dream. Absolute freedom and enjoyment. There were no corporate sponsorships, no anti-smoking nazis, no appearance of any cops around. Freedom has died, many of those you see in that clip may have sold out and become conservatives, and now tell us younger folk to abstain and not do what they did. From abstinence programs to in school drug testing the boomers have screwed us. In return we will pick their nursing home.

  • well put. what has happened to america, the land of the free?

  • I just lived in China for 2yrs and although I admit they have issues and high level restrictions, my normal daily ordinary life was WAY more free feeling than here in the US. And I felt way safer on a subway or public bus there than here.

    :-\

  • That was in reply to foolsgold, not sure why it didn't land down there.

  • That was righteous. It's almost saddening to watch clips like this that show how much more simple things were then- people just had fun. Period. Good fun listening to good music without the right wing shutting down everything.

Damn right wing... took the grass!

  • @clarese76

When you grow up you'll suddenly understand why the "hippie" movement died. It wasn't due to corporate sponsorship or "the man" keeping it down. It was due to the incessant greed, thuggery, extortion, addiction and larceny within the movement.

The hippies signed their own "irrelevant" warrant. Nobody had the "assassinated.

  • @hkusp45c Corporate sponsorship came from the greed, thuggery, larceny, and extortion. As for the addiction aspect, some of those "hippies" chose to take away other's liberties because of their own personal failings. Thank you for agreeing with me. You may have grown up son, but I think your reading comprehension needs to catch up with the rest of your maturity. BTW, there is a Neo-hippy movement out there, so it isn't "dead" entirely, just weezing badly. Have a God bless day.

  • @clarese76 what a broad brush you paint with clarese. Those folks, a majority of them got out of Dodge (SF) in 67-68. They went out into the woods to get away from the B - I bizness that is corporate America.

This was no frat boy, sorority gal gig. Lol. You started out well, and then it just crashed and burned into some revisionist, no make that some hallucinatory reality that you may have as to what it was all about and what was in the cards for most of these freaks.

  • @clarese76 Well with experience comes knowledge...no?

  • @clarese76 Well with experience comes knowledge...no?

  • @clarese76

You learned about freedom from a video clip?

  • @headlesscotton you learned about freedom?

  • @clarese76 that's some broad brush you're stroking Clarese. Do me a favor and STFU - now looking at 60 y.o. and I haven't changed one fucking bit since this period. Piss on you with that fucking conservative comment. FU

  • My favorite dead live is Ladies and Gentleman the grateful dead. have u ever listen? I think is better than europe 72, but also europe72 has many pearls in it

  • RIP pigpen and Jerry. you will live forever.

  • Funny how people classically think of hippies as "unamerican"--when I see a video like this, I feel like I'm seeing the pinnacle of American culture. That and the iggy-looking fellow at 4:08.

  • right on

  • You're right; the establishment thought they were unAmerican. Actually, they were Patriots because they cared enough about their country to make a statement. That said, I didn't approve of everything they did to communicate their message. Attacking our boys upon return from duty in Vietnam for example...

  • My favorite dead cd is Live Europe '72. Some great driving music. Also helps keep my mind off all the bad stuff goin on these days.

  • amen to that, just drove dallas to chicago..couldn't have made it without that album
