Perhaps the key to Revelation is to compare the text with events and other writings in its historical milieu. I'm sorry but the book of Revelation is not at unclear in its overall meaning - a clear presentation of the Christian hope with a beastly (666) emperor in charge of Rome. Strange readings of the text using it to predict events in the 21st century are largely inventions of the 19th Century. This video does a great job of setting the scene for such a fruitful enquiry.
John had to describe things that were not in existence.Imagine trying to describe a military helicopter or tank.
