Personally I think the first game is harder mostly because of the flood. I don't know about halo 3 cause I don't have a 360.

Believe me, when you're playing on legendary, and you have Jackel snipers who literally never miss a shot, and their beam rifles (covenant snipers) have 1-hit kills... You realize that this is the hardest Halo in the trilogy.

right...halo 1 is the hardest halo in the trilogy. try passing it on legendary. you wont be able to. I did this on legendary, and h3, but I die way too many times on h1

Halo 2 really is the hardest. I don't even break a sweat when playing Halo 1 on legendary, but I'm afraid to even think about playing Halo 2 on legendary because of the sheer amount of times that I get sniped.
