@cockneyrebellion Buy their compilation Essential As Anything - the DVD features nearly all their videos and documentaries etc including interviews. A fantastic collection of songs and videos....
I could almost swear that the dancing chap in the light suit with the blonde hair at about 4'35" is Johnny Batchelor from Dropbears. And yes, proabably a Fairlight - it was new at the time and was developed locally in Sydney, so they might well have had access to one .. although I doubt they owned it - buying one cost the equivalent of a small Aussie house in those days
You guys always have to co-opt ANYTHING to make your damned tedious point?
I like the song, the video, the audio/visual ironies, the lyrics, the band, and I really don't give a liquidy shit conscerning their gender preference.
Shakespeare was a notorious miscogynist, and women... teach HIM in college.
If only I had really listened in my 20's. it's always about a women (for us straight guys) trace all of your bad stuff, a women was at the root, but I love em!
A lot of New Wave styles were really gay, I cringe at some of the outfits I wore at times (those white Joe Jackson shoes for one thing, lol). All in the name of trying to get a chick in bed though so it was all good!
the only documentary/interview of the Mentals that i know of is one that was on a cable music channel called 'Music Max' - I didn't record it and cannot remember much mentioned about their history.
The band had a major line-up change during the late 90's. Brothers Reg and Pete, who had been in the band from the beginning, quit to focus on their fashion range 'Mambo'. Drummer Wayne has recently quite.

Saw these guys open for Men At Work in '84 and I remember liking this song. Never saw this video, though, even back in the day.

Interesting to see the Rage logo after the title!
i think it's a great video for the time it was made.

@AussieRoadshow
Rage did that a few times during the 80s.... I recorded this around November (or December) of 1989.

The late 70s. The Civic Hotel The band having abeer with the crowd in between sets. It was a wonderful time. God am I that old!!!!

The older I get the more I can relate to their lyrics - also, nice touch of surrealism in the video.

I always start off going "oh no, another commercial Mentals song, shame really..."
and then I end up almost weeping, and frantically favoriting it..

Martin and Greedy are the only originals left.

Brilliant costumes (shark man, anyone?) and the sausages burning... lots of deft touches on top of a sweet tune.
