I appreciate all the kind comments on Charlie and The Stones, and after all, this song is meant for fun, since it's simultaneously a Charlie tribute and a parody of a Kinks song :) So all these negative (and stuck up) people putting down Charlie and The Stones should just go watch what they like..
Someone sent me a private message putting down Charlie and The Stones. and told me I "couldn't be more wrong" so I told them: "Well a lot of people disagree with you. And there is no 'better' in music - music is self expression...people who think they're 'better' due to techincal crap are the ones who couldn't be more wrong...so there :)"
Charlie is an anomaly to me! His drumming is very basic and even primal to my ears. His movements are stiff and like the song says, he does rush fills although he also somehow compensates for the rush and ends up back on beat right after. The songs don't slow and speed but there is something almost fragile about the beat he keeps. Still, comments like "amazing" and "the best" are thrown around. Jealous? I think if we're honest, we naysayers are definitely jealous! Ah to have his gig........
@chungiemunchin i think what u dont like in his sound is one of the things that i most like in his sound... this late atmosphere he leaves, he fakes a hit in the plates before the time leavin this atmosphere for the box... its a simple drummer he just swing and let that note in the air... well its matter of taste... i like the way he sound... but i understand what ur sayin
To all of you who keep naming people that you say are better than Charlie: I know you're all jealous you're not in the Stones, and you're not a great one-of-a-kind drummer like Charlie, but quit lying - these people aren't better than Charlie. Everyone just has a different style, and guess what? Charlie is perfect for the Stones. Charlie IS the Stones. And Charlie ROCKS.
@Mr2009Truth Couldn't put it better myself. That's what Keith Richards would always say, that Charlie is and always has been the perfect drummer for the Stones.
This song is not a tribute to Charlie Watts. The song is from a Rutles-esque Kinks parody album. The song is specifically parodying "David Watts" from Something Else, a song about the lead singer's brother getting propositioned by a rich older man.
Like drumr4life, the mighty talent that is Stewart Copeland has also been playing drums for over 30 years, (with considerable success I might add), he has stated on more than one occasion that though their styles are completely different how he was influenced by Charlies simple, solid playing. Minimal kit, massive sound! I'm a Beatles fan but Its well documented but John Lennon did reply when asked if Ringo was the best drummer in the world? He's not even the best drummer in the Beatles!!
i think hes alot more capable then keeping a beat but back in the early 60s when they started not many drum styles were out until people like mitch mitchell and ginger baker made fushionish styles and keith moon maybe he didnt want to copy lol
No Stones song would sound the same or as good without the brand that Charlie puts on their music - therein lies the genius of Charlie Watts

@juanmdmc Ringo is older - and not better, just different, and that's a fact. As for opinions, I like Charlie better.

"When he rushes fills, you might see him smirk" - That's hilarious! It's so true, I've always noticed he really does rush his fills.
