I just hope hip hop doesn't end up like rock. Where it starts with black people the a few white people come, get famous, then us black people lose a genre and it all starts over again. This is the full Elvis Effect.
Not like that exactly. White kids dont want to see just white guys rap. But what is marketed to white kids is black guys controlled by white business interests so its basically the same
@MrWiiPS360 dats exactly wats gon happen i been called it and what i say comes true jus like i said hip hop is da new pop music da new n sync, backstreet boy, britney spears from da late 90s music, and now i recently heard dat gucci mane got a song comin out wit britney spears, smh.
@MrWiiPS360 rock did not start with black people..black people invented jazz..and the basics for rock. white people made rock, and popularized it. but rock is a colorless music. as is rap. anyone who see's color needs to get there head out there ass.
I think that graffiti is a sub genre but the true orgins of the hip hop culture cultivated from cyphering which then led to rapping to a beat, yet maintain the poetic flow of freestyling. Basically hip-hops core is rapping and freestyling and writing, that is why the music is what primarily addressed
Eh Graffiti and Hip-hop kinda came around at the same time, look up some documentaries on graffiti and it goes more indepth then what I can, so they really complimented eac other. Graffiti was the art form of Hip-hop while rap became the spoken word form, also by cyphering do you mean that stuff the DJ says when they are scratching or looping back beats and what not? Cuz I read somewhere that was how rap started...could be wrong though.
sub-culture my ass,its one of four main the elements of hip hop,its visual expresseion of underprivilged people who master the art of spraypaint and made something positive out of it.then it was included into hip hop
Trying to tell people what their art should be about is anti-art. The definition of art is self-expression. How can anyone tell an artist what their expression of self should be, or how to limit it. The common mis-perception is that hip hop as a whole is expressing, or is suppose to express, the same thing as a single unit. Hip hop is a broad spectrum with many different corners and crevices. None less valid than another. The creator of the art determines the job of the art that's created.
i dont understand y this is called a hiphop debate when all they talk about is rap. y dont they talk about any other elements of hiphop? like graffiti, beat boxing, DJing, dance, etc.
Sadly Graffiti and breat boxing are pretty much dead when compared to the level they were at about hmmm 5 10 years ago, DJing is still alive and well along with breaking however they are as respected in America as they are in other places like Korea or the UK. It should be noted though Graffiti has recently been admitted into art museums in new york I believe...might be DC not sure. It is sad but the other elements to hip-hop aren't as respected as they once were. But it is all changing soon ;)
yeah, i know...graff penalties are just too high nowadays...MFONE might have life in prison, and fines upwards of 500,000 dollars...It's easier to write on a wall and have see everyone see it than get a record deal, that's scary to people...It's the one element they have no control over, and justify putting us in prison by calling it vandalism...i'd rather see a burner running than the off-colored paint covering it up...i live in pittsburgh, look up Daniel Montano...might get life in prison...
I don't know if Hip-Hop has made race relations better. I think it's made it things a little better socially amongst young people and let people come together at the club on the weekends, but I think it probably is hurting us as young black people when it comes time to go to job interviews or apply for a loan, etc. I think non black hip-hop fans in positions of power are probably even more convinced that we'll steal from the job, or fuck somebody up or that we're not that bright.
All rap is suppose to do is sound good. Hip hop is not here to solve all our problems, or even make them the least bit better. If an artist chooses to use music to try and make things better, that's their choice. It's not a responsibility. An artist has a responsibility to make art that expresses themselves. If what you're about is rims and selling drugs, and you think it sounds good in a song, then you owe it to yourself to make that your expression of music.
That has to do with closed mindedness that shouldnt be addressed with the artist but adressed with the politics of the country. The statement you made is equivalent to saying that people will think ima bite the head off a bat, or fuck a bird, or trash the office, or spew fake blood out of my mouth, or whatever other crazy rock stories are out there, or that any medium of art the artists associate with that medium are then going to be portrayed that way; hip hop aint hurting, racisim is.
violence doesnt come from hip hop.hip hop in no way produces violence.its bs when the news tell u a kid killed some1 cuz of a rap song.there was a greater motive behind the killing.hip hop isnt to blame.if u dont like the words, dont listen.

This is what's going on. Up and coming rappers are told by record companies " you have to be thugged out to sell records". Consequently, art becomes a product. instead of expressing themselves rappers are forced to talk about sex, drugs and murder to sell records.
These guys talk about Hip Hop but can only really comment on Hip Hop from the late 80s, early 90s. What does that tell you?
(Commercial) Hip Hop mid 90s-to right now is EMBARASSING. Stop throwing names around and start talking about WHERE IT WENT WRONG. Hip Hop=Minstrel show.
From the start Hip Hop was a joke to the outside world. It was called nigger music, in some case it was not called music at all. Coming from South Jamaica Queens in New York. No one like the music but blacks and some hispanics that lived in our neighborhood. They called it jungle jive saying we jump around like apes. I am not 34 yrs old and what I am hearing coming from peoples faces are funny and cool and sad at the same time. Now everyone is taking credit. WOW
This whole music is music shit is getting on my nerves. The HISTORY is there for all to see. Why are you in this room anyway.....If you don't like black people why come to watch this vid?? I think you resent black people because you want to be down, but you can't be.
The same goes for country music and rock music. Hank Williams, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, etc.. were influenced by Robert Johnson, Howlin Wolf, Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters. When will people recognize what all of these forms of music really are...not black, not white, but examples of what can be accomplished when black people and white people work together without black pride or white pride clouding their progress. Stop the madness!!
Rap is not black music. Rap would not be the billion dollar industry that it is today w/o white people. Not only buying the albums but where would russell simmons be without rick ruben. Excuse me Rock n Roll is black music...... Walk this way was Aerosmith...granted. But what about Hound dog by Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton, Was completely accredited to Elvis presley..... So fuck off. White people always have appropriated black music.
I've been listening to rap music since whodini and RunDMC came out. We're all Americans. That is our culture...AMERICAN. A black man in cuba and a black man in chicago do not share the same culture. Same for a white man in Sweden and a white man in San Diego. Black and white are colors, not cultures. If you grew up in the ghetto, then your culture is a one of a low income...not black, as there are more poor white people in this country than poor black people.

That is not true. There are many people who enjoy hip hop and are literate and educated. What you have to realize is that hip hop is a culture, not just music. Hip hop is the way you live. Rap is just a part of hip hop. The rap videos that you see on BET and MTV is not what hip hop is all about.
haha he called kanye "a minstrel show. a trick." he comes out with a great comment like 'bush hates black people', but then his music reflects nothing but bling clothes and chicks.
True, but hip-hop as a culture where the mainstream started paying attention did not occur in full until the late 1980s and early 1990s, save for "The Messsage" and "Rapper's Delight." You're a purist I see :)
....The guy said hip hop started with NWA...it didn't, it started in the 70's by people like DJ Kool Herc, Afrika Bambaata, etc. Also, he says Kanye west is the face of hip hop. Of mainstream hip hop yes, but mainstream hip hop is usually not even real hip hop, it's the version just to sell and make money, which is not what hip hop is about.
I'm pretty sure that's not what he said. The guy in the blue shirt was talking about how NWA was one of the first rap groups to blantantly tell the youth to arm themselves against authority figures such as the police. Of course, hip-hop involves more than just rapping, which is just one part of the culture. I think your definition of what hip-hop is differs from what others may think, although I definitely feel you on that...
Wow, most of those panelists, don't even know what hip hop is. It's not just a music form, it's a subculture with other elements besides music. The element of bboying or "breakdancing" was there in hip hop, BEFORE "rapping."

@spatuelli The music community has actually changed a lot since the birth of hip-hop till now. I listen to all different kinds of music including Heavy Metal, Grunge, and Death Metal. Howie from Killswitch Engage is a black vocalist doing Death Metal. Look at the group Lamb of God who on their tour DVD's listen to Biggie and Tupac on their tour bus.
