I have 3 seed pods from an indoor tropical hibiscus whos blooms fell of around this past june. It is now December and the pods show no visual indication of drying out like browning and so forth. Is this normal? Thanks
@juicyprincess00 ,not really sure, did they fall off premature .. maybe not staying on the plant cause them to stay green.. usually the seed pods of the perennial hibiscus stay on and turn brown as the plant dies back..
Dianne I have seeds to a beautiful red that i will share with you. I dont know why i collected so many seeds this year..LOL . I started some this year and got red again. these are a deep burgundy and the plant gets about 3 feet tall.
@itsjustdeb579 Hi Deb, I plan to pick some yet from my pink clouds one and these are very similar to the parent plant in fact I just let the seeds fall and they germ outside and a few come up every year.. yeah they can be similar in look but most are hybrids I believe.. thanks for stopping by!
Do I have to keep the seeds from hardy hibiscus cold for a period of time before I plant them? When is the best time to start them indoors for transplanting in spring - zone 5?
@JoanneRo212 , I started them in January in my area, I did not use stratification one variety germed great the other did not.. next time I may experiment with it and do both methods.. I am also in zone 5 ..
i have several nursery grown hibiscus also two my mother inlaw grew from seed. I collect the seeds every fall but I have not had any luck, some suggest pricking the seed, my mother inlaw says she just drops them in good soil no specific depth and leave them over winter in pots. any suggestions?
@teddyv50 , I think it does work better now to let the seed drop then the following Spring when they come up from seed, to transplant then.. some that I collected had no germ so I am just going to let them fall and repot the following season from now on.. I did not prick the seed maybe they need a cold period in the frig before planting too.. I have noticed seed from the original plant germ, seed from seeded plant did not..

@akamarlowe10 , well if you feel the pod is dry, I like to see the seeds and the pod open that way I know they are ready to pick.

I will try collecting seeds this year. I have the 'El Captitan' (sp.) better known as the 'Poodle' Hibiscus.
