If any of you guys have time... I would LOVE to hear your freedback and responses to my cover of this tune. I put a decent amount of work into it. It was recorded with my home studio equipment, and has two camera angles. I edited it down with Final Cut. Anyway I just want to know if I did the song justice or not... It's the default on my profile right now... Thanks!
This thread has some of the most interesting comments on Radiohead. Most people miss the connection between them and classical influences. However they openly source Penderecki as an influence. I would suspect Thom does a lot of this by happy accident, where as Johnny is classically trained... A lot of other rock bands are very classical in their approach though... YES comes to mind, as well as other prog rock bands.
Johnny Greenwood is a clasically trained musician. He plays and has composed the violin sections of many of their songs. Many of their songs are influenced by classical and mediaeaval music.
Well, I know that (There Will Be Blood soundtrack ftw), but I very seriously doubt that they actually consciously decide to play in Dorian mode.
Perhaps I'm wrong, but from my understanding, they aren't that structured when they're writing songs - of course, when composing parts to put on top of songs, perhaps, or when Jonny is doing solo work, but I'm fairly certain that their structure of how they compose/rehearse together doesn't lend itself to modes.
? Why would you say no modern rock band has any interest in writing music the way classical musicians do? How would composing music be any different in this situation compared to any other. Radiohead is probably the most classical like of all the modern rock bands. And this song lends itself especially to classical music. Listen to the progression - i, V, III, IV, iv, i, V, i sus4, I
Classical musicians spend much more time on structure than on sound.
Sound comes from structure, whereas with rock and most modern music, structure comes from sound.
The progression is great, but honestly, few progressive/post rock bands always stay within a key, and that doesn't validate the opinion that they're writing this music classically.
umm... I think you should listen to classical music a bit more, my friend. Even "classical" composers like beethoven modulate keys all the time. And trying to identify the key to a more modern composer like Stravinsky can be almost impossible because it will change so often. Infact, progressive/rock bands usually dont change keys... this song for example. Im not sure what you mean when you say "writing music classically".
thom consistantly says he can't read a note of music. doesn't stop him being a musician though, when you write music you come across things that sound to good to you, it may so happen you stumble across a classical scale, but it doesn't always mean its written with that in mind or in that purpose
Yeah the only classically trained one out of the bunch is Johnny... Who can read music, and also programs his own sampling/synth software. I know Johnny wrote string arrangements for several of their songs. Thom is brilliant at writing and Johnny at arranging... That's the core of the genius of the band. The rest are just brilliant musicians and icing on the cake.
All the choirs, guitar noises and instrumentation in the background can substitute the pure emotion he gets when he hits that note in the climax, although they do help.
these Jools Holland clips are always the best.. because there are no stupid fans screaming and yelling, but yet Radiohead are still play the fuck out of this song b/c they know there's an audience there
i completely agree with you. those kicking and screaming "fans" just don't understand what they are hearing/seeing. even thom himself has said this too
yeah indeed...i've watched some video with radiohead performing exit music live and ppl were so annoying loud that thom said:"shut up" between the lyrics...lol they did laugh though :P i would do the same :)
Listened to this after finishing the book 'a state of denmark'. Dreampt a despot named jobling had taken over England and i was fleeing the anti demnocratic persecution. Best dream ever. I think i got on a boat too. Just thought id share that with people who couldnt give a fuck :)
How can people compare radiohead with muse??? u dnt see muse with a song that gets better each time u listen 2 it... and give u goosebumps on the build up 2 the end...this song is heart-melting...fuck funeral lol....this goin 2 b my song for life!!!
It is a mellotron, the M400 model. He is using Mellotron Choirs. Check the end of Entangled by Genesis, the effect is similar. This is an amazing song (by this I mean Exit Music and Entangled)

Sounds like a Dorian Mode.
ludachris475 3 years ago
A bit, but I don't think it is.
I think even Radiohead worries much more about figuring out guitar parts than notating in modes. =P
I'd venture to say that no modern rock band has much interest in really "writing" music in the way that classical artists have become accustomed.
