@17secret actually met some moron chick 20 years ago who thought the bass line nirvana lifted from killing joke was a "nirvana original" LOL what a dumb ass
@Killzswich It's a simple box design riff, nobody can claim any kind of originality when playing one, somebody ripped it off from some poor bluesman first, eons ago.
@Sam5726 They sound very similar, but I don't think Cobain would have directy ripped a song off to make money or anything. I think he did, but his motivations to do so were remedied in the end, since he thought the bass and the guitar at the beginning sounded cool. Do you think he did it for the money?
what a strange argument, anyone who plays guitar/ bass , will know , no ones ripped anyone off, if that was the case then every tune ever made would be a rip off of all the earlier tunes ever made, theres only so many variations on a scale anyway !!! all three tunes are totaly different and by different bands, all unique and brilliant , none better than the next, just enjoy bands for what they do , better not to compare, but hey what do i know .....
Agree with myspaceisforfags, KJ ripped that riff off way more blatantly than Nirvana did to KJ. I love all 3 bands, but if you're too much of a fanboy for reason (to all the damned or nirvana haters) go suck a fuck. Every band on this planet has played around with another bands riffs in their songs.
@youwinoneinternets I think Nirvanas sounds closer to The Damned than Nirvana to KJ or KJ to The Damned. To me it sounds more like Nirvana ripped off The Damned
Jaz Coleman has some weird theories about being able to break out of linear time so perhaps Joke did rip off Nirvana after all! But who cares Nirvana borrowed a riff, Joke used to do the same thing, in fact most bands do! Jaz managed to play this one for maximum publicity and paved the way for their comeback in the 90s. And he and Dave Grohl are big mates these days, so I guess they don't care.
Who cares, great bands and great artists borrow from eachother and influence eachother, it's also inevitable some songs will sound like others whether coincidental or not, both great bands, Killing Joke clearly were first but who cares, two great songs, two great bands
Nirvana = overrated trash. Well then again, if you can count "grunge" bands that existed on one hand...it's kind of hard to not hear the name over and over by nutswingers.
I fucking hated Nirvana ... because I grew up in the era BEFORE them ( late 70's-80's ) and knew where they were mining their songs from already ... KJ are only one such band. Nirvana were the death ot true Underground music ...
@Rikitocker you could could go further... that Kurt Cobain mined his introspection honesty, self examination and suicidal tenancies from Ian Curtis (obviously that's ridiculous). I would say that regardless of simply 'mining' or perhaps more artfully extracting; Nirvana undeniably created their own personality and influenced bands just as they had been themselves. Your statement sounds pretty puerile and hysterical
It isn't just the riff or the notes themselves. Probably lots of bands have come up with similar-ish riffs, some independently of each other. Its the fact that Nirvana also copied the distinctive guitar tone. Wow, I'm surprised they got away with something so transparant.
It does sound a little like The Damned but the riff is even closer in the Nirvarna song. I would think Kurt took his idea from this song rather than The Damned. All good songs anyway IMO.
yeah i agree that the opening riff is similar but played slightly differently. happens all the time in rock music. nobody in THAT original you see, that's why musicians hear a riff or melody and make it their own.
except for instances like vanilla ice's "ice ice baby". that was carbon copy rip of queens "under pressure".
To the individual who thinks that Killing Joke ripped off Nirvana; do your research. Killing Joke were there first, so if anything Nirvana ripped THEM off!!
Has anyone won a case in court over stealing a "rift" from another song? Honestly at this point in time there really isn't any purely new combination of cords to make...
First listen to The Damned - Life Goes On (1982) and then to the Killing Joke - Eighties song (1985). If anything it was Killing Joke ripping off The Damned. Pretty hypocrite to go and try sue Nirvana for doing that riff.
@stickdudes1 Decided because Kurt died so they dropped the charges. Speaking of ripping off songs, listen to the Damned's "Life Goes On" song made in 1982.. Then find out who's the real so called riff stealer ;)
kurt actually stated in an interview that the riff was influenced by this song. you could probably actually look up the interview if you actually care that much. in my opinion just enjoy the music. who cares. we are all just the product of someone elses already processed idea anyway.
Who gives a rat's ass - KJ, Nirvana, and The Damned are all favorite bands of mine, so I could not care less. They saved us all from Bon Jovi and New Kids and Rectal Stainer.
@siouxise82 Yes, it did remind me of one of them Nirvana songs (which were written later) when It started. It's not entirely the same, but if it gives more than one person the same thought then it could be a somewhat valid influence for Kurt's song writing .
Killing Joke are the biggest frauds ever. They almost sued Nirvana for "borrowing this riff, yet they did the same thing when they stole it from "The Damned". Killing Joke are the biggest posers in music history. Fuck them.
@RebelThoughts yes, lets dismiss all of killing jokes music and influence simply because they have what, 2 songs that are not original? even if Nirvana didnt use that riff, they still are an aweful group
@NamelessNLS - Ya, I always thought so too. There's also a Damned song off Strawberries album with the exact same minor 3rd and perfect fifth intervals (what your hearing) that Come As You Are use. And yes, Killing Joke and the Damned came long before Nirvana but, I'm sure Cobain was inspired by both.
Any morons going on about "riffs being ripped" clearly doesn't play guitar... there is not an infinite number of riffs and chords, eventually when you are just sitting at your guitar playing around you will hit something that sounds cool but turns out to have already been done. You didnt "rip it off", you discovered it yourself.
@sathos Very true! This riff (and Life Goes On and Come As You Are) is based on a minor 3rd interval (E up to G) and a perfect 5th (D up to A) interval oh, and to get even more technical, there's a perfect fourth there too (G down to D). It's what you do with the integral parts that makes a song unique - lyrics, melody, syncopation... And to push your point further, look at the 12 bar blues, the origins of r&r, 1-4-5 is pretty standard there...
originaly this riff have been ripped from the damned "life goes on" song... nirvana with "come as you are" ripped killing joke' "eighties" who ripped the damned... and so what ? all these song are fuckin amazin' and define the state of mind of their times : end of the 70's /begin of the eighties , middle eighties and 90's...
i've noticed ppl saying that jaz coleman robebd kiss face paint hahaha
so you're not allowed to have black and white face paint whithout people saying you're copying kiss. you people need to check out arthur brown. YEARS BEFORE KISS!
they were original, saw them many times in the 80's. Just chalk up the copy comments this way, My kids friends passed through one night, we were watching Rocky Horror. Little darling had the balls to say " Hey he's copying Marilyn Manson." After I picked my jaw up off the floor I looked her scuare in the face and said.... "Get Out"
If i were about to Die (to meet wether god or the devil) surely one of the songs i would love to hear before! Cause i love music with real musicians and beautiful melodies that carries you to heaven...
I don't know whether Nirvana ripped this riff or not. They may have done.
I love Killing Joke, but I can take or leave Nirvana.
So on that basis, I'm playing Devil's Advocate.
No-one so far has realised that it is possible for riffs to be invented more than once.
In other words, it is entirely possible that Nirvana came up with the riff for 'Come as You Are' entirely independently, without having been influenced by Killing Joke.
They did much more than nirvana they are god making the creation of pop music and Rock'n roll with only what they had at the time: passion for music and not for money
People just can't cope with the fact that there's a possibility that Nirvana ripped a riff. They did, all bands take a riff from another sooner or later, but it happens. Just like comedians taking and twisting around another's joke. It doesn't matter, it's the sound. And I hear 'come as you are' within the 1st ten seconds of the song. Quit kissin Nirvana's ass, and quit idolizing musicians. We're all human.
@rmhanzel Of course there is a lot of copying ,sometimes involutarily, sometimes intentional the only question in that case being wether the idea is simply being stolen oor used to pay hommage to the original artist.
Wow, this one is really nice! Interesting version with different lyrics and Jaz playing an Oberheim OB-X (as far as I can tell) while singing. Great upload! Thanx!
@FBWEWRESTLING wow. what a convincing series of deep thought out arguments! wait... something smells... funny... smells like you pulled it out of.. your arse... oh wait you did! Aha! ;)
P.s. if you were trying to bring KJ down you might want to know that they're still playing. So technically, they "were" not epic, they "are" epic..
Genius tone for p90 pups or what ! , btw recession or economic adversity always brings out the best in music ... the 80's were awesome for music of all genres . . . these guys had better guitar tone and vocals than the nwobhm bands and i lived for hard rock / metal .... and still do !. Recession times again now ... but technology will save us this time .... true genius music to come again in the next ten years .. yep n i can't wait ... music is the blood of life.
who the fuck cares... its really not the same. and besides nirvana is way better and come as you are is way better. these guys suck so they made a big deal out of it. obviously they needed more money. sometimes songs have the same riffs. it happens. get over it.
@sourman3000 In this case, it doesn't really matter what you think of kj--Dave Grohl obviously disagreed when he covered "Requiem" w/ Foo fighters and produced one of their albums, and likewise for whoever wrote come as you are--but I'll agree that it probably wasn't worth a lawsuit--after all, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
@sourman3000 first fact- cobain noted it was the same - nirvana sent christmas cards to kj before nevermind as they all were fans- dave grohl played drums on their 2003 record- Kj are credited with inflluencing the enitire alternatuve music scene- you know bands like nirvana and the pixies and ministry etc etc - while this live version isnt great the studio version is and killing joke are legends to many people who sought out good music(the jam the damned nma) before radio and mtv told us to!
Well, as for the Eighties/Come As "You Are Controversy, I'd be willing to allow for the possibility that it's coincidence---if Dave Grohl weren't involved
@HoNk4chicken the damned life goes on you twat! i don't think any of the riffs are a rip off but if nirvana doesn't get a free pass neither do these hypocrites!
@roejogan8 whose giving these guys a free pass? The video you're commenting on was recorded a year before Cobain and Novoselic even met! Now, I don't care if Nirvana ripped it off, but it sure didn't go the other way around.
@roejogan8 and the damned ripped it off from an obscure 1965 british hit as told by capt sensible so fucking relax- the best thing is all three songs were good !
@roejogan8 im not sure neither is capt sensible as he doesnt remember the song- it was a minor hit that charted and disappeared in the uk in the 60s- very common! However the quote was from alternative press magazine some years back around 1997 or 98!
@thatseverin Sorry mate, Ice Age is completely different but I see where your coming from, JD were pioneers, but the Joke had an aggression and and insane energy unsurpassed, they influenced Godflesh to Jane's Addiction to Lamb of God to Metallica to Nirvana et al
@NamelessNLS No they didn't. "Come As You Are" may sound similar, but it sure as hell isn't the same riff. I don't know why the fuck you people are even thinking of Nirvana while listening to Killing Joke. By the way, learn how to spell and form complete sentences before making a statement like that.

great song.
ToastCombo 1 year ago
People just can't cope with the fact that there's a possibility that Nirvana ripped a riff. They did, all bands take a riff from another sooner or later, but it happens. Just like comedians taking and twisting around another's joke. It doesn't matter, it's the sound. And I hear 'come as you are' within the 1st ten seconds of the song. Quit kissin Nirvana's ass, and quit idolizing musicians. We're all human.
rmhanzel 1 year ago
@rmhanzel Of course there is a lot of copying ,sometimes involutarily, sometimes intentional the only question in that case being wether the idea is simply being stolen oor used to pay hommage to the original artist.
dudewhosaysarrh 1 year ago
they fucking ripped this aswell
GrainGrippaBert 1 year ago
nirvana did not copy. the riff is slightly similar. thats it.
LentilsOverkill 1 year ago
y r lead singers always so "special" despite having the least talented role in band..there just cheerleaders...
trufiend138 1 year ago
@trufiend138 cause singing is really hard and writing good lyrics is even harder. cheerleaders? a band's lyrics define them.

Gay Bar by Electric Six sounds more like it than Nirvana in terms of tempo and overall attitude. Nirvana plays it way to slower than that.

@Southeastwest1 lmfao gay bar
that song is ridiculous, and the music video is even more ridiculous.

Yeah, sorry. Mis-typed it. Meant to say PUERILE . ( Silly and immature, infantile of male gender)

So technically, they "were" not epic, they "are" epic..

why I have not lived the Eighties?? D: - amazing band!
victorfreitas 1 year ago
Genius tone for p90 pups or what ! , btw recession or economic adversity always brings out the best in music ... the 80's were awesome for music of all genres . . . these guys had better guitar tone and vocals than the nwobhm bands and i lived for hard rock / metal .... and still do !. Recession times again now ... but technology will save us this time .... true genius music to come again in the next ten years .. yep n i can't wait ... music is the blood of life.

who the fuck cares... its really not the same. and besides nirvana is way better and come as you are is way better. these guys suck so they made a big deal out of it. obviously they needed more money. sometimes songs have the same riffs. it happens. get over it.
sourman3000 1 year ago
@sourman3000 In this case, it doesn't really matter what you think of kj--Dave Grohl obviously disagreed when he covered "Requiem" w/ Foo fighters and produced one of their albums, and likewise for whoever wrote come as you are--but I'll agree that it probably wasn't worth a lawsuit--after all, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
shawnmazzola 1 year ago
@sourman3000 first fact- cobain noted it was the same - nirvana sent christmas cards to kj before nevermind as they all were fans- dave grohl played drums on their 2003 record- Kj are credited with inflluencing the enitire alternatuve music scene- you know bands like nirvana and the pixies and ministry etc etc - while this live version isnt great the studio version is and killing joke are legends to many people who sought out good music(the jam the damned nma) before radio and mtv told us to!
salvadory 1 year ago
Well, as for the Eighties/Come As "You Are Controversy, I'd be willing to allow for the possibility that it's coincidence---if Dave Grohl weren't involved
shawnmazzola 1 year ago
@shawnmazzola I wouldn't doubt on the chance that it was a blatant rip-off. Kurt Cobain wore his influences on his sleeve in terms of songwriting.

@HoNk4chicken the damned life goes on you twat! i don't think any of the riffs are a rip off but if nirvana doesn't get a free pass neither do these hypocrites!
roejogan8 1 year ago
@roejogan8 whose giving these guys a free pass? The video you're commenting on was recorded a year before Cobain and Novoselic even met! Now, I don't care if Nirvana ripped it off, but it sure didn't go the other way around.
TheShortStory 1 year ago
@roejogan8 and the damned ripped it off from an obscure 1965 british hit as told by capt sensible so fucking relax- the best thing is all three songs were good !
salvadory 1 year ago
@salvadory and what was this obscure 1965 british hit? i'd really like to fucking hear it. i like all 3 songs and i am fucking relaxed.
roejogan8 1 year ago
@roejogan8 im not sure neither is capt sensible as he doesnt remember the song- it was a minor hit that charted and disappeared in the uk in the 60s- very common! However the quote was from alternative press magazine some years back around 1997 or 98!

thatseverin 1 year ago
@thatseverin Sorry mate, Ice Age is completely different but I see where your coming from, JD were pioneers, but the Joke had an aggression and and insane energy unsurpassed, they influenced Godflesh to Jane's Addiction to Lamb of God to Metallica to Nirvana et al

@HoNk4chicken you should hear the song "Life goes on" by the damned the riff is suspiciously similar ...
jhonnygunner 1 year ago
@HoNk4chicken
If you believe somehow that "Killing Joke" did not copy this song's riff from some one else, then go listen to Life Goes On by "The Damned."

killing joke - life goes on - are the copier of this ....."the damned"
shotgunshawzy 1 year ago
@NamelessNLS sounds similar but its true
psilosivina 1 year ago
@NamelessNLS No they didn't. "Come As You Are" may sound similar, but it sure as hell isn't the same riff. I don't know why the fuck you people are even thinking of Nirvana while listening to Killing Joke. By the way, learn how to spell and form complete sentences before making a statement like that.
