I travel on highway 90 everyday and night for work. I also work on many of the local ranches. The lights are from car’s headlights on highway 67. During the winter these lights experience some type of mirage effect and appear to separate vertically like towers of lights. BUT THEY ARE HEADLIGHTS!
Razel42, I agree entirely. There has NEVER been any documented records of the lights going back centuries (or more precisely to 1883 when Robert Ellison "supposedly" first documented them....which he never did by the way). They are the product of headlights and natural weather effects.
I was there this weekend and I cant begin to explain them but they are not car lights. they moved, split into 2 and 3 different ones. Blinked on and off with a distinct pattern.
all theroies of the mafra lights have been debunked it is truly unexplainable they move to erraticly to be car lights and theroies of methane gasses or phospherous materials have all been debunked.and where did you hear that robert ellisons story was fake?I found that story in numerous places and none of them say it is fake.and i would like to see these studies razel42 talks about.
For anyone interested in the science behind this effect, it's a superior mirage effect on car headlights and other such light source. Many studies have been carried out and proved this. But i don't think anyone needs to know the science of it to enjoy it's beauty. And certainly no one need the supernatural bull people come up with. It's beautiful enough without that.
I have seen various kinds of strange opitical phenomena around that area, Ft. Davis and Alpine, but never in Marfa. I think there are at least two distinct effects. One is ground-based lights are somehow refracted or bent so that the appear to be coming from different location than the actual source. The other is an intensification effect.
I'm from Abilene, Tx... and there are the Anson Lights in Anson, Tx which is about 15 miles from Abilene... I did not know that there were more lights in another town. I've never been to the Marfa lights, but I have been to the Anson lights several times, and I would really recommend checking it out in Anson.
We go every August to visit Marfa just for the lights! And we come up with a new theory every year! The hair stands up on the back of your neck when these little lights move in pairs slowly across the horizon and then in an instant split from each other and travel opposite each other vertically hundreds of feet apart. Come see for yourself...it's like being a kid all over again when the world was new.
@johnford Are these the same lights like the weather channel did a vacation thing tonite on weather chl these the same llights they were talking about? Marco new mexico or marfa? couldnt understand him he slurred tonite on that report but his crew got excellant coverage and caught the lights great footage too
@11AcEvEdO11 how can we find the show or this place just wondering they got some good footage @ weather chl....good stuff too night vision..ect... tell me if you find it lol thxs
the marfa lights are real and there are reports about the lights recorded all the way back to settler times and the native americans that came from that area belived them to be the spirits of dead ancestors just to give you an idea of how long these lights have been around

I thought it was car lights in a mountain road, but during the day you can see that there aren't any mountains on that side of the valley....jf
