Howard Zinn, one of the greatest American in this modern time. Noam Chomsky, Naomi Klein, Amy Goodman etc...... are the voices that awake consciousness of class conflict, racial injustice, national arrogance........ same as H. Zinn did it most of his lifetime.
Excellent tribute. This is why Democracy Now! is one of my favorite programs. They gave Howard Zinn a proper tribute as opposed to MSM, who treated his passing like a trivial news blurb.
Some men, you just wish they could live forever... Their death leaves you in strange state of loneliness, like a ship that's lost sight of the lighthouse.
I understand the sentiment, but can we both mourn AND organize? He was such a complete human being that it would bother me if people didn't mourn his passing.
Rest in PEACE Howard, your voice will live on. For your reference, surf out his November 'Holy War' speech in Boston and his Democracy Now special about a year ago, easy to find an the D'Now web site.
I've seen that speech and it was great. It's quite sad how Americans adhere very strictly to the Constitution.
The Constitution was written one year after the Shays Rebellion (poor farmers rebelling against the rich), and there was a direct relation if you view the Founding Fathers' letters. Pretty much they were concerned about the poor and middle class uprising against the rich, and so they got together and decided America needs a stronger federal gov't to protect the rights of the rich.
Since you're Canadian like me, I'm sure you can agree that American history taught in America is probably different than that taught in Canada (if you've taken history at university).
Constitutionalists are just like fundamentalist Christians, Jews, etc, they're both annoying and crazy.
The Founding Fathers were great in their time, but I wouldn't have them as my role models.
I admire Abraham Lincoln, he was a man of his time, but even him I wouldn't have as a role model (he was racist).

We need to be moving forward as a society instead of clinging to ancient documents.

Sad to see one of the great and kind minds depart. His ideas surely will resonate for a long time to come.

Good clarification. Don't see why not. Mourn and organize! Let's just not let our mourning paralyze us from organizing I mean. :)
