I just upgraded my mouse from the original Apple Mouse and the Magic Mouse has been great for me especially dealing with the issues of scrolling and always cleaning my original mouse.

A must buy for Apple users who own the original mouse.

Ahh, your going for the high end one. Nice. I would deffo wait if you can. Reason I say this is that the MBP's were updated in June'ish and they are now due an update. Rumours are that the MBP's will get the quad core processors which you will benefit vastly from and should last you a longer time than the current core 2 duo.

Hi Micky, If your going to get a MBP after Xmas, I would hold on slightly longer. The reason why I say this is that there are rumours that the MBP will be getting updated chips in possibly late Jan 2010. In essence, you'll get a much more robust system for the same price.

Yes, I was refering to the firmware of the mouse. Don't worry about the updates, as soon as they're available - you will see a pop-up stating that an update is available.

I fought with the mouse tracking garbage for macs, I tried all kinds of 3rd party software, it never felt "normal", normal being the way mice feel in every distro of linux and every version of windows. I don't know what the hell apple's problem is but on top of many other reasons, the mouse tracking for me and many others in OS X is un-freaking bearable. Also, this mouse looks like it would be uncomfortable for anyone who spends many hours in front of a computer.

Erm, you sir are abviously a grade A idiot. I have been using a Logitech mouse for over a year now and the tracking is 'perfect'. The logitech software gives additional tracking speed within its own program is system preferences. Yes, the Magic Mouse has poor tracking - but theres a workaround for that too. Until you've used this mouse, kindly refrain from talking garbage.

Hey try this.

Open terminal

Type the following: defaults write -g com.apple.mouse.scaling your_mouse_speed

Replace your_mouse_speed with your new setting. The maximum mouse speed on mac desktops is 3.0 (when maxed out in system preferences). I changed my speed to 5.0 and it was noticeably better on my 24″ screen

I can't wait to try one out myself. I was just saying not to long ago how I wouldn't be able to use a desktop because i love my mbp multi touch trackpad to much and using a mouse would be awkward. That sucks that it doesn't have the full range of functions as an apple multi touch trackpad, especially the lack of 3 & 4 finger swipe recognition under that sys pref screen @ 3:10. It say 2 finger but I don't see pinch listed there and zoom is move to 1 finger?

I ordered mine today, going to be sweet. I really do hope they rewrite code for more custom setting regarding the 2 finger touch. I want, 1 touch+second finger swipe up/down for zoom, and side swipe l/r for scrolling pages via Safari etc.

the zooming has been in OS X since 10.2, and has been accessible from the scroll wheel since 10.4 I believe. But it was in Universal Access not the mouse settings

Try USB Overdrive for speeding up your tracking, I've been using it for a good while and now if I go on to anyone else's mac it drives me nuts at how slow it is.

Great review, I've ordered one so now really looking forward to trying it out.

Would be good to know if you do try USB Overdrive if it works well with the magic mouse.

I take that back. Whilst it works - it disables all the features of the Magic Mouse i.e. scorolling, two fingers swipe etc thus making the device absolutely useless. I can't seem to get rid of it now either, despite removing it from the system preferences. Arghhhh

Shit, sorry about that! I've ordered mine but I'm going to be lost without USB Overdrive. I'd say he'll do an update for the magic mouse but that could take some time. That's disappointing.

From the USB Overdrive site (if you haven't already seen it):

"To uninstall USB Overdrive, use the Uninstall application located in Utilities folder in Apps folder. If you deleted the uninstaller, reinstall USB Overdrive (even if it's already installed) & then remove everything with Uninstall application."
