  • yeah Pentax AF slower than EOS 700, what's else?

  • Umm, the canon has nothing to do with how old the body is, its a new USM lens while the Pentax is internal screw-drive driven. The pentax has NO internal lens focus motor. There should be no comparison.

  • I just take pictures not play with gadgets Pentax give me professional performance and more than 21 million optics to expan my versatility and get the picture I want. for more than have of the price. If you want to focus fast by an Leica M9 Range finder I the fastest and more precise focus system and don´t use batteries... ho wait! is a manual focus range finder system!

  • The most stupid thing I´ve ever seen. Do photography with what ever you like, don´t loose your time doing this.

By the way....I UPGRADED from Canon to Pentax

  • Will you post a low-light shot of a $50 200mm Pentax (in-body IS) at 1/80sec vs a $50 Canon lens at 1/80sec?

I will buy a Canon (or a Nikon) when they offer as many features as a competing Pentax or Sony offers in comparable price. The C/N cameras at pretty much all price levels (except for the top-end ones, no competition there) are crippled just so that when the buyers learn that it's a s****y camera (such as missing bracketing mode in D3100), they will have to buy the next expensive model.

  • I agree that it is bizarre for pentax owners to claim this video isn't fair: the Canon is 19 years old!

However, Pentax have their own strengths. See the pentax k5 under the shower video (among others demonstrating the weather resistance)

The 3 reasons I think Pentax is worth buying despite AF speed: in camera shake reduction, affordable water resistant body (K20, K7, K5) and lenses, and smaller than other DSLRs with similar features - and smaller lenses.

  • Wow, the pentax kit lens's focus speed actually half decent, albeit loud. At least its not as noisy and slow as that horrible canon 18-55 is.

  • Interesting video, and don't worry about angry fanboys. I myself am a pentaxian and see no problem in admitting that pentax AF is SLOOOW.

  • It is a well known fact that Pentax AF is worse than any competition, but that is far from the only thing to consider when buying a camera. Sure my Pentax might be a bit noisier and half a second slower, but the image quality of the lenses is very comparable to other makes, and a some Pentax prime lenses are considered are considered by some to be the best. It's all in what you need yourself, I don't take very many action photos, so I have no need for a fast AF.

  • I also don't really care for auto focus, so it doesn't really bother me with my K-7. I like shooting set ups and try doing fine art photography, so I usually prefer using my manual focus far more, not just on the K7 but any camera.

  • 1) this is old DA18-55AL while K7's kit is 18-55WR which looks different.

    2) put 16-50/2.8 or 17-70/4 on K7.. you are comparing way different things

  • 1) Wrong. This is the 18-55 II not the cheap plastic L from the k-x.

    2) I am comparing a brand new k-7 with a brand new kit lens (one of the fastest focusing on Pentax) to a 19 year old Camera, with an 11 year-old kit. lens. The 19- year old camera wins. You want me to make it look worse for the Pentax by actually using Canon modern lenses?

  • xmeda,

To see a comparison of the K-7 vs a modern Canon, and modern Canon glass, see the video "Pentax K-7 vs Canon 7D Focus Speed Test"

There you will see how truly slow Pentax AF is compared to modern competition.
