  • Like rolling along a wooden coaster. Imagine traveling on that bridge in a Lincoln Town Car 1990 with low air suspensions.

  • I was in Charleston before it closed and took a wrong turn, not knowing I was going to go over it. Scariest bridge I've ever been on!! The wife kept saying "I'm not liking this, I can see over the edge!" I told her to shut up.....the only time I said that and didn't get in trouble. Thanks for the memories :)

  • We used to routinely make the same trip someone else posted about, from Savannah to Shallotte, to visit family, in the early 2000s. My wife kept her eyes closed the whole time. I was terrified the first time, but learned to enjoy it.

  • Oh good grief, this bridge! When I lived in Charleston, this was still a two-way bridge--no fun and scary as all get-out! I took the Silas Pearman instead whenever possible. Memories!

  • this was trully one of the scariest fucking rides i've ever been on. when i was a kid in charelston....this was something you didn't want to do. my asshole stepfather took us across it just to scare the shit out of us. it worked. terribly unsafe bridge. that being said.....i miss them.

  • I drove both of those bridges back in the day on my old Harley, I hated them but it was an adventure at the same time!

  • When the bridge closed it had a sufficient rating of 4.0 out of 100. It was in serious shape and it was seriously a white knuckle ride. I believe this is one of the scariest bridges ever to have existed. This film was taken in 2005 the very day before it closed forever...I think that was July 13, 2005. I wish the video had turned out better, unfortunately.

  • Wow, I'd almost forgotten just how bad that bridge was. It was an adventure every time!

  • The first time I drove over this bridge was during a terrific thunderstorm with the wind blowing gusts about 45 miles an hour. It was a real adventure. I lived in Charleston and still usually drove this bridge as it was a like a roller coaster ride.

  • Thanx so much for this.....as a kid, my family traveled from Savannah to Shallotte NC many years across that bridge...when you're a kid it's cool, but as an adult ,kinda makes your butt tightin up.....my mom was absolutely terrified...phobias....wish I had this this on DVD...Oh and JUSTINMC...why did u even watch it??? PRICK!!!!!!

  • This brings back some memories! That bridge was so sketchy! Remember when Trevor Barnhill drove over the bridge backwards, hit 2 cars, crashed through the railings, fell 100 ft. and lived!

  • what year did you film this if you don't mind?

  • I just came across this video. Thanks! My family lived on Sullivan's Island from 1939 to 1950. I went to grade school in town and rode this bridge on a school bus every day. In 1946 a ship hit the bridge and I believe it was a family of 5 that plunged into the river and drowned. We had to cross the river on a ferry boat for a few weeks. I have great memories of 11 years on Sullivan's Island but was always scared of riding over the Grace Memorial. Love the video though.

  • Thank you for posting this. That old bridge has been a source of nightmares for me for 50 years. I am glad you did this before it was gone. Good forethought. Thank you.

  • TESTA DEMOLITION DID THAT JOB

  • its testa corp.

  • Ummm who cares who did it and what they used..grow up. Boston is much easier to navigate after the changes.

  • This video was shot on the old bridge when it was one way. Imagine going over it with cars coming at you in the other lane. Grew up in Chas in the 40s the terror is still familiar. Driving over it when I got my license in 52 was a white knuckler for sure.

  • I know a few who have been across that one. All agree it was one very scary bridge. Good video.

  • Been across it a few times, never had the nerve to drive it. You got guts to go that fast. And I don't think it is a pointless video. I may never have driven across it, but I love Charleston, and this was one of the landmarks. Now it will be preserved on video. Good job.

  • i hate that bridge. i just arrived at the Isle Of Palms a few days before it closed. as of this year (2007) you wouldnt even know they were there. The new one is way cooler (and makes me feel better, ha ha)

  • That's the SCDOT for you. I've hated driving across that thing.

    Thanks for the video.
