Use dextrin for just regular "dirty" stars, but if you are going for color then use something that donates chlorine ions like Parlon or Saran resin which is probably the best. If you use dextrin use another chlorine donor with it for color.

I prefer using a spray bottle instead of pouring in the water. You can get a more precise consistancy. A few stars like D1 are moisture sensitive during the making of the stars.

I also like using syringes of different sizes to pump the stars, and embedding them with flying fish fuse! stuff em inside your stars for a cool effect. Falling leaf fuse didn't seem to work as good, but works too.

I haven't made a star roller yet because I like forming every single one by hand, to fit my tubes

Can someone help? What im trying to do is make stars for a 1 inch shell, very small ball stars, so at what part do i make them into balls, or can i just keep them squares? im going to try rolling them by myself but i dont have an actual roller. so do i roll them after i flatten them on the wax sheet or after i let them dry? or do i just pull off little peices of the clay ball and make them into little balls?

@njmvermont Hmmmmm I never thought of that.... That would have good results. It certainly gets hot enough. Would have to be a pretty big shell though. Sadly i have dont nothing this year for making anything as you can see...

I got into quite a CDL Accident and it has stopped me from making anything atm.. I hope to get back at it soon : /

@Anthony82949 used willow wood. Actually bought a bag of willow wood charcoal at Walmart it was a HUGE bad and paid like $4.00 for it. Smashed it with a hammer then blended it up then added to the then finifshed with ballmilling it. Great result. The charcoal was 100% natural.

umm..why would you ball mill bp for 30 hours. can't it only be ground so much ?

1 hour

5 hours

10 hours

20 hours

30 hours then ask again..

You will actually see a HUGE Difference.

Test it at each marked time. Not being a smart ass just better for you to try then for me to explain.

if you want better and more even stars you should concider this once you are done making the batch and its all wet put it on the wax paper push it out a bit with your hand then take two strips of flat wood the size you want the stars. so say u want the stars to be 1/4 of an inch you would get a 1/4 think peice of wood (x2). you put them on both sides of the batch and put another peic of wax paper on top of that. then all you have to do is take a dowl and roll it out. makes verry even stars.

Whenever i make it, the consistency of the clay looks very different, looks (and feels) more like a Non-Newtonian fluid, i use 75% alcohol 25% water, do you have any suggustions?

@26dragon93 That made 240 grams of Tiger tail mix and made quite a few stars. When your adding the alcohol make sure you put in VERY Little by little. if you add to much it will become like soup very quickly and that just sucks best thing to do when adding is use rubber gloves and mix it with your hands while your adding the alcohol. cause you will feel the consistency first hand. Well because you will already have your hands in it.. As far as the song.. I will dig and find it and get back to ya

@LINK320 I think sugar makes it burn a bit slower Your making tiger tails which already burn slow so it may work. But you will get more smoke.. i think,. I guess i should just say im not sure.. You could try to make a small batch and try it out.

Personally, I'd use grounding wires on all metal items and metal screen on the table top. Static can be real dangerous in such an atmosphere. I'd get a grounding strap for my body too, but that's just me. Looks like a lot of fun. I love fireworks.... Best of luck and be safe!!! :-D Thanks for showing us how!!!

@Landotter1 Thanks. Yeah it is dangerous. Make sure your always outside with airflow moving around. and anytime you are actually making a firework and it will have compression make sure you know what your doing at all times and know that anything can go wrong at any time and have a plan to fix whatever could go wrong (Run) Lol.

@Me1ndo Thanks for the compliment Im using rubbing alcohol you can use water also but rubbing alcohol evaporates extremely fast and saves on drying time. im using the high concentrate kind its like 98% or whatever.

Sorry to be stupid, but what is the ratio of Finished Milled BP to Dextrin? And if i was to mix a pyrotechnic color agent such as barium nitrate, how much of that would i put in to the Dextrin/BP mixture?

@wannaparty247 That is a good question. not sure i can give you the correct answer. i don't want to tell you and then be wrong. as far as dextrin you want a very little amount. It is only used for a binding agent. So maybe 5% - 10% of your total composition.

Instead of cutting stars i now pump them. I use PVC to pump them. 1'st i get whatever sise of star i want and get the PVC Tube for the sise of the star. For example if i want 3/4 inch stars i use a 3/4 inch pipe and then get a 3/4 inch dowel rod and sand it down to fit in the tube. Then mix the BP so it is like clay and pack it in the tube and then push it out. The benefit to pumping them is it compresses the bp vs just cutting them so they burn sooo much better. I can do a tut if you want.
