hi im just starting out as amateur. This video will be very usful as i amthanking very seriosly thinking about icom 2820 and the icom 92ad please do some more on the 2 radios.when i pass the foundation licence and get radios i will contact you which will be good practice using D-STAR - Andy Devon UK.
is d star only for Icom radio? or is it universal regardless of make? what about what police are using I come across old police radio witch I can program can they be used in d star? And what if I had a radio that is based at my home verses one that is in my car(s) will all of them receive in exclusive mode?
I would like these ham radio manufactures to produce something similar to the pocket PCs/ blackberries ect so that way we can produce our own mobile web.
@cmritchie04. Only ICOM makes off-the-shelf D-STAR equipment at this time. Other manufacturers can make it if they want to, and we hope some will. There are some accessories made by small companies or individuals, but not ready to operate radios. The police radios use "P-25" - similar to D-STAR but not compatible at all. As for Blackberry-style ham equipment - I think our market is too small for anyone to devote that much engineering to.
The fairly new ID-880 is more like $550 (a dual-band, but one band at a time, mobile that I review in the January '10 QST). That's still a hefty premium for D-STAR compared to similar analog-only radios. So no question, you really do have to want to stroll out on the edge, and not everybody will.
My wife says I have an HT surgically attached to my hip. She's wrong. It's only the quick-disconnect clip that's surgically attached. The HT is removable - KN4AQ
Wouldnt a nextal be a bit easier to use?
