That solo should be awarded a gold medal ! Glenn is a genius, to write songs of such stature, sing so wonderfully and play such magnificent lead and rhythm guitar- unbelievable!! He makes me sick! It's gonna take me weeks to learn this solo and he just rattles it off with consummate ease! Squeeze were one of the best bands of the 20th century second only to The Beatles, Astonishingly good!!!!
@planejunky Glenn's lyric: "And here in the bar, the pianoman's found" makes clear that the what might appear to be over-the-top piano playing is something appropriate to the song, and that he wanted. And nothing about the syth line, which was a key element of the song's sound.
How about the fact that he plays some serious tricky lead guitar while singing and making it all seem effortless? Annnnnd....he's not only nice, but brilliantly funny!
@relphius I beg to differ. That solo is magnificent - he's shredding without any effects or distortion and its all perfectly fretted and played. There aren't too many singer / guitarists that would pull it off. If you're one of them, I take my hat off to you
@spitefulload I was talking about the notes, the scales, the fingering: it's not that hard. What is hard is playing it cleanly, smoothly, and apparently doing it every time. Of course, he has had years of practice. And like I said, it is extremely beautifully put together, and I couldn't have done that, even if I can play the notes.
I keep meaning to respond to your comment, Matt. I agree wholeheartedly. Glenn is a fabulous guitarist, a fabulous songwriter and has a fabulous voice. He's also a really nice bloke!
Fantastic comment, nasratfatty! I had the pleasure of being the sound engineer for a solo gig that Glenn did for a friend's 50th, a couple of years ago. While they were soundchecking, the guitarist (another friend) asked if he could do the solo for another song. Glenn agreed.
I said: "Just as well it's not "Another Nail..." Neither Glenn nor Craig (the other guitarist) seemed to understand me. You do. and I'm a guitarist myself! It is a masterful piece of playing from Mr Tilbrook!
Yeh, I finally worked it all out, apart from the end 'chord' parts, and I really have to play it hundreds of times to make sure I don't slip up - master composing from mr. Tilbrook!
He really is underated as a guitarist, I saw him a couple of years ago and he played voodoo chile solo on the acoustic guitar - incredible!
@nickhirst999 Your so right , he is an amazing guitarist . I must have seen Squeeze around 40 times over the years not mention Glens solo gigs, I always wait for this solo. The solo on Some Fantastic place is another, it gives me goose bumps. Glen and Chris are so talented its scary , i've been into them since the first single , checkout my cover of Up The Junction on my channel, hope you like
@nasratfatty Ive been in a band since 1981 in High School, and we just didn't try Squeeze, Zappa, or any artist's songs we felt we couldn't do justice to. Its not only his shapes, its how tight their changes and parts are, great feel, and tack sharp technically also. I still marvel at why they never became HUGE in the states...but we are rather dim.

@jeffreyshaw I love Jools, but I have to agree he over played this and spoiled it. A real shame as this is a class song.

@spitefulload Dead right - one of the finest composed and played solos in all rock and roll guitar history - perhaps THE finest - ask Eric.

Glenn should be handed an AWARD for that solo, which is really a perfect little song of it's own inside a foundation of great song structure!
