  • Some years back I went with my Millonaire collector employer to see this plane with the prospect of purchasing it for later restoration. He did the wheeling & dealing but withdrew from the deal. It was corroded , but intact, and would have been an excellent base for a restoration. Sheetmetal is sheetmetal, and can be duplicated. The forged and machined parts are a little more difficult . The fuselage itself has some quirks of construction, but with time & effort could duplicated.

  • terrible music!!!!

  • Poor poor pilot.. Must of been shot to hell when it hit the ground.

  • @wwiikillerbor44

No, Wulf- Dietrich Widowitz survived (wounded) and died in another crash later in the war.

  • i think its quite a lovely relic as is, without restoration

  • I know the Nazis did some terrible things but they are a very interesting part of European history. Especially when it comes to their great technology, such as the lightning fast Me's. Itd be amazing to see it fly again one day

  • its amazing how the elevator is still at an extreme position, showing the pilots attempt to keep the plane in the air.

  • @BenBenConCon

The pilot made a perfect wheels-up landing on ice, since there was not doubt that the plane wasn't staying in the air after being shot down. The Luftwaffe ground crews had some time to salvage a few items before it sank, so the control surfaces could have been moved in any direction.

  • so what are they gonna do with it..just display it like it is or are they going to restore it?

  • @crotchboots

Restoration to flying condition has just started, though recently stalled while correct blueprints are researched to make the restoration as authentic as possible.

  • @FiveCentsPlease

Will the material hold its original strength?? The whole thing is soooo rusty...

  • @vascularcylinder

Most likely it will be de-skinned and anything that doesn't pass inspection will be replaced. The owners located a crated new engine (extremely rare) since the original has a hole in it and anything made of magnesium will have disappeared. All other systems will be overhauled to new if they plan to fly it and not "pickle" it. Actually the cold freshwater lake preserved it pretty well. Saltwater would have destroyed it.

  • @FiveCentsPlease

That's some tough works! Thanks! :)

  • The cannon in the center of the prop is missing.

  • @test71996 I don't believe that particular model had the middle cannon. At least if it was converted to an E-7. I believe only the E3's and possibly the E4's had 20mm nose cannons. I may be wrong though.

  • nose was painted yellow he was a squad commander

  • @luger9mmbest I disagree, yellow recognition panels were used by the germans at the russian front. By then squadron colors were done away with as were many personal markings

  • So we are just going to ignore the Yamato.. And the P51 Mustang...

  • @dredrev i never for get the Yamato and the P51 Mustang and other legendary planes and ships

  • One of the best airplane in the WW2. Gremany was the leader of Air, Land and Water VH

we bouild the best Tank the best uboat and warship (Bismark) and the best Fightairplane Me-109

and FW 190 and the first rocket V1

  • @MrThecoolhand Sorry but the ME-262A shits all over the Bf-109.And the Spitfire shit all over it too.But that's not taking away credit for this beautiful aeroplane either.

  • @MrThecoolhand Like USA to day hmmmmm, like time passing true i have that odd filling of One big sign of equality, as military power, but same is in Position of Global BULLY III RICH and IV RICH US of A...But that is not surprise at list for any body who can read between the lines

  • Anyone know who the pilot was and if he survived the war?

  • @starguard

Read the description above. And the pilot died in another crash later in the war.

  • check the holes made by bullets.....

  • I catch these all the time with my Neodymium super magnet on a rope.

  • what a beautiful old airplane...it would be such an amazing project to restore one to operational status.

  • this is not a russian, its nazi aircraft becoz i see the simbol if nazi on the tail, its visible,

  • @artech28 wow ur a quick one. not only is it a ME 109 but the description clearly states it was german

  • @chrisc170 hahaha , as i comment my mind get that i was stepped quick. :P

  • Salute to the fallen ones R.I.P

  • ya,thats where it should be

  • She is still resting gloriously on her landing gear.

  • the footage plus the music was an overpowering peice of history, should be in a museum.

  • @MrCaptainNObeard dont you notice where the video is being filmed.

  • Possibly the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.

  • its nice to see people still triy to save the past

  • This plane with a lot of TLC can probably fly again.

  • @NearAbbeyRoad

That is exactly what is planned for it and already in progress.

  • what a great old warbird.!

  • I've seen her in person, she sure is a beauty

  • @evilhendrix2 How close could you get to it? Close enough to touch? I would love to just put my hand on it for a second or two :) Touch can make something seem so much more real than just looking.

  • Amazing

  • I'm not clear on this; Widowitz was shot down in this aircraft in Russia by a Hurricane???

  • @panzerleader49

Yes, shot down by Soviet Hurricanes from 2 GIAP V-VS SF while escorting Bf110s on April 4, 1942. Widowitz survived (wounded, I believe) and made a wheels-up landing on a frozen lake. Widowitz died later in the war in a crash. Pilot Pokrovskiy recorded the kill for the 109.

  • @panzerleader49 It's called "lend lease"America and Britain supplied russia with planes, guns and other impliments of war to help them fight the nazis.

  • REST IN PEACE WARRIOR!!!

  • Какая только дрянь не водится в наших озёрах.

  • @npo6eJIB3aKoHe это не дрянь, это история.

  • All things considered, she is still a lady of beauty....

  • Wow! That is some history there

  • Great shots and music, thanks for this!

  • Always that I saw an machine preserved of WW2, I compare like find a jewer for history enthusiast

  • no one disturb the beauty.......:*)

  • She was on a par with the legendary spitfire both were killing machines .but both were works of art .

  • fascinating. i would love to dig/find artifacts like these, big and small from wars which were so costly.

  • Beautiful :*-)

  • are they going to restore her to her former glory.

  • @wooky3491 I hope not it tells a better story just the way she is.

  • @wooky3491

Yes, to authentic condition and planning for an airworthy rebuild. Restoration is just beginning and they are researching existing blueprints/drawings so that the rebuild is accurate.

  • Awesome video! Thank you.

  • wow

  • a true hero plane .... good old shoe ^^

  • @DornDaniel no need to be an asshole about it, a simple "read description" would have been enough

  • Wow, very nice!!

  • name of song?

  • @nick21sammy Apparently you cant read the description so it is pointless to write it down here.

  • @DornDaniel no need to be a jackass, a simple "Read description" would have been enough

  • @DornDaniel no need to be an asshole about it

  • truly beautiful

  • I'd like to see the final results.

  • This plane is on display at the Planes of Fame Air Museum in Chino, CA. So if you live in Southern California you can drive over and see it in person.

  • Really hope that they dont restore her. Thats one heck of a historical document.

  • @PipewrenchDale I agree.

  • such a beautiful aircraft , hard to believe it was a bringer of death , the devil can be beautifull in disguise

  • @rburndred yes, isn't it a graceful beast! I'm not sure if you're just being poetic or not, but the aircraft and its weapon systems are just a tool. Menacing in the hands of a skilled pilot but, I agree, definitely a beautiful machine, but surely the whole 'devil' concept is supersticious nonesense and should be left in the dark ages? Would one describe the Spitfire or Mustang in the same way? They were arguably both more graceful and more deadly...

  • Super video...

  • Beautiful. Still looks deadly today.

  • very cool

  • just seeing the battle damage is amazing.

  • NAZI AAAHHH RUN AWAY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLZZZZZZZ

  • no cannon in nose... simply amazing video and thanks!

glad the discription states 'Bf 109' to correct the title! : )

  • A dirge would've been more appropriate music.

  • its surprisingly mostly intact

  • I saw this wonderfull machine at Chino ,LA,a year ago. It's in best hands if you know they also have "glacier lady" in supperb condition.I realy hope they get the bird flying again. That's where airplanes have there place.I saw this year a flying formation of a BF109 and the Me262 at Hahnweide fly in!Impressive. But have somme of you seen the Horten glider on the cealing of this video?Only one remaning in the world, the flying wing. That started the evolution the the stealts of today!

  • to bad for all the fighting we do all the time, we can fly go to the moon

but cant stop the wars, and dont have much fun. nice shop

  • Amazing music! Great footage and a huge +1 from me!

  • How bout some narration instead of the music?

  • gives the words "frozen in time" a hole new meaning...

  • What an amazing recovery.

  • sshhh!!! she is resting.......

  • @TheBByamashiro it might recover...

    ...hopefully

  • that gives me goosebumps !!

  • Comment removed

  • @PriorVideos You know these guys where bad?

  • Yes, you are right. I read about the pilot after I saw the video, and my feelings changed. Actually, my thoughts about all war have changed. Sometimes one must fight, but the consequences of war are always sad and tragic.

  • soothing music for a Nazi fighter. WTF.

  • @trippletear the plane aint a nazi, it all depends on a pilot!

  • @Snooperking I believe that German Officers in WW-2 were not able to belong to a political party, someone correct me if I am wrong.

  • shes beautiful

  • dont worry he was dead befor he drown

  • @MUNCHIES46 he didnt die read the info below the video

  • my my my..one hell of a fighter, wont this make only a handful that are in exsistance today???

  • @FiveCentsPlease:

    Hi,

thanks for the response...so good to hear that quite the original plane will be persisting.

Was wondering if there would be different approaches for a plane, as you can re-use e.g.any body panel on a car if not too cooroded..On a plane I guess you will have way more forces working on it.

    Cheers.

    Jürgen

  • @ecsdaehn

Requirements for airworthy permits are more strict than for automotive. Shaping the metal is only part of the process, since the metal must also have the correct properties for strength that hold the airframe together. Cracks and corrosion can be deadly. New material must meet original manufacturing specifications.

  • pretty awesome :P

  • Hi All,

just a question from a non airplane freak...

when you say ït will be restored to flying again, how much of the old stuff is usually saved?

Am a maniac on old cars which were abducted by the Soviets to USSR and brought back 50 years later were just completely rebuild around maybe a chassis and a few bits.

nice craftmanship but for me not the original car if 90% are new..

just wondering if this works same with the old plane(s)?!

  • @ecsdaehn

A few advantages for this example was that is was in a cold freshwater lake, without the corrosion affects that would be seen in a saltwater environment. Chemical composition of the water/soil can very the corrosion on an object. Secondly, this was a controlled landing on ice, with some materials salvaged by the Luftwaffe before its sank. Not much bent metal other than impact and battle damage. The engine has many magnesium parts which will have dissolved away. Cont....

  • @ecsdaehn

Other engine parts will have rusted, and there is a large cannon hole in it. A replacement engine will be needed with perhaps some parts reused. In all, I think this plane will retain a lot of original airframe material. Flight worthy components (electrics, etc.) will be another matter unless the owner wants to just restore it and pickle it. Some planes have mostly new material while a few have a lot of original metal.

  • Thank u to restore that kind of war birds...thank you to preserve it !

  • Thats gorgous

  • I want one :'(

  • Amazing piece of human engineering! very jealous.

  • yep

  • Very tastefully and respectfully done! Nice job!

  • I can't wait to see her come back to life.

  • will it be restored and in a museum to see??

  • @Phoenicion

Restoration to airworthy has just been started, according to latest info. It will likely take several years to complete.

  • wow! very cool find. definetly a few bullet holes in the fuselage, maybe a 20mm cannon hole in the wing.

TheXxVIP3RxX, that part of the tail may not have been "sliced off". later production ME 109s had a slightly taller tailfin extension made of wood, so it probably just rotted off. i cant be positive if this is a plane with this extension, but since it has the later style solid prop spinner it is possible.

i cant believe how well preserved the canopy is!

  • wow. aliminium, never rusts! do i see bullet holes under the right hand side of the cockpit??

  • It seems that it was a Recon plane, turned fighter, it also seems that when he landed it, he was pulling up with flaps set down. He must of done a great job as half the tail is sliced off

  • i want to have sex with this plane!

  • Outstanding!

  • wow still a beautiful plane

  • Haunting relic

  • one tuff old bird i say

  • Beautiful and very rare relic of a beautiful plane. I hope someone will restore the plane - maybe even in flyworthy condition - and bring it back to germany. If i only had the money for this ... .*scribbles on his x-mas wishlist* "Dear Santa ..." ;-)

  • I like her :)

  • lets hop she flies again! there are not enough aircraft like this around to teach my generation about the struggles that have happened in our history!

Welche Gedanken erst...

  • wow check out the bullet holes on this thing. And he actually survived which makes it amazing.

  • Crashing or not. The fuckin balls on a guy trying to land this thing on a frozen lake lol XD

  • Isn't removing this from the bottom of a lake sort of like removing a sunken ship from the bottom of the sea? I mean, this was a grave, of the Luftwaffe pilot who no doubt most likely was in it when it crashed into the water. If he wasn't already dead, then the impact would have killed him.

  • @YambidiBlamBlam the pilot didnt die in this crash !

  • @YambidiBlamBlam Maybe read the description before you comment next time!

  • @YambidiBlamBlam Read the description, he didn't die in it

  • That's friggin sweet

  • What is the name of this music? Lovely selection for this.

  • Sehr schönes Video, Grüße aus den fernen Deutschland!

  • i don't think she's going to fly again, too much damage after all this time, too much money to restore her. she might end up in some museum, roughly repainted and brought back to some mock-up status. shame, though...

  • @gigiminiotti

The two E-models presently flying started with much less of the original airframe. This example is likely to keep much of the original structure and/or skin. There's a lot of new-build structure made now as well, although it's expensive.

  • An old girl and she stands in prettynes and hopefuel to fly again in the air stand she there :D i am not an men for dreamly words but i hope that this grate plane can fly and fly and fly in the sky of the legendary war history of german engines and build factorys :D

  • i have pictures of my grandpa and his Me Bf-109... beautiful plane.. i love it.. it must be fantastic to fly with such a great airplane...

    granpa i love you!! =)

  • Beautiful, sad to see so few of the thousands of ME-109 survive to this day. It was such a classic warplane from the war.

  • Very nice find, hope this fine craft will be restored, loved the music thanks for the upload.

  • I think it is always awesome to see relics of World War II because as the years go by, we are going to lose more and more veterans of that era. It is one thing to see footage of planes such as this, but seeing an actual plane that you can physcially touch is completely different experience. Aside from damage action and water, that plane is in remarkable condition.

  • For it's time it was a great fighter..I hope it flies again.

  • another piece of beautiful german engineering.

  • They may of been our enemies but that is still sad, you can see at 1:12 the aircraft was trying to pull up, that was a beautiful aircraft but still, the spitifre had and has to be the best!

  • id like to see that fly soon!

  • OMFG after more than 50 yrs it still remains almost intact!!! amazing.

  • what if tghe engine started that would be funny

  • Fantastic.

  • Compelling to see the bullet holes in this plane. This and the fact that much of it's original paint survives really brings us closer to the past when we look at this.

  • It's an early one too. The condition of the frame will determine whether it is ever flown again, but at the very least it should be restored as a static exhibit.

  • epic music choice too!

  • It is a lot of Ме-109 in working order it has been grasped by red army in 1942, and also various other types of German planes. This has not reached.

  • absolutly beautiful

  • I'm always impressed, if I see that there is still nazi-stuff found. I mean I don't like Nazis, but I like things they built, and in Nazi things there's much history in.

  • @xBlueeSkyx this isn't "Nazi stuff". Nazi was a political party. This was German military stuff, the majority of the soldiers not even belonging to the Nazi party.

  • Further more I did not say Mark made a mistake. What I said was he got caught in his own bump ( vortex ). That isn't a mistake but bad luck. Spanish report says he was above AOA. But given the ill manners of this aircraft a sudden stall on approach is not where you want to be. In his own review he even says AOA is actually a lot higher than indicated. Needed to be on the power because it was so scary to fly. Go read it if you have not already.

  • Maybe you should attend some lectures. I watched Hanna dead stick the widow maker 3 times at Wanaka. I didn't understand then what he was doing but I do now. He was trying to master the nasty little bastard. The first time I recall the motor actually cut out. That was the DB engine. For all its fame it was actually pretty rubbish. Made of poor metal and prone to over heating and seizing. That is why they changed back to the Merlin in the Buchon. Which was actually how the first mks were anyway.

  • @alphabetica

The Buchon was never equipped with the DB engines because Germany was unable to fulfill their contract to supply them from 1942, and Spain used their Hispano V12s and later adopting the Merlins. So the quality of the DB engines was not a factor because there were never any to start with. Other than quality issues with late war German engines built with slave labor and sabotage, they are quite sophisticated and technically superior to Allied engines according to restorers today.

  • @alphabetica that had nothing to do with buchon, changing to merlins, the db engine was not a piece of crap, and i have never read of any 109 pilot during the war complaing of the quality of the engine considering german engines are normally "over engineered" when it comes to tolerances and quality.

  • In remarkably good shape. I wonder how long it was in the water.

  • @diverdown48

April 4, 1942 to 2003 when it was removed from the water.

  • GODDAMN IT WHO PUT THESE DAMN ONIONS HERE!?!?!?!?

  • As as to blanket emotional statements. Learn your aircraft. Any child who has ever built a model of an Me109 knows the cockpit was horrible and cramped the landing gear poor and that the aircraft was liable to unpredictable torque roll at the worst of times. Willie cranked these out in enormous numbers and the quality varied enormously to. Messerschmitt got the contract because they could build it cheaper and faster ( BADLY ) than any of the competition!

  • @alphabetica

I wasn't requesting a history lesson on the flying characteristics of the Me109. I am aware of the ground tracking performance from the narrow landing gear design and the torque effects which are common to all of the high-power piston fighters. Again, you are making an emotional connection to a piece of history that you would rather simply destroy than preserve. You laud Hanna's flying skill but also correctly point out that his loss was from pilot error and no fault of the plane.
