It is very hard to classify TOOL into a category. I cannot think of any bad as deep, intense, artistic, and among several other things. They are in their own category, and I think they are already one of the greatest bands ever, if not the greatest. Of course my opinion is biased because I love TOOL. I just think they are really far ahead of everyone else, and I cannot think of anyone that is even close to them.
Well I can understand your bias being a diehard fan myself, but there are other bands I would say are just as deep and also unconventional in terms of how they execute their music. In terms of composition style, Tool is prog metal and the records follow an art rock format. You know, it's all very conceptual with them.

Even older stuff like Joy Division is just as deep, but touches on things in a different light and without the same beliefs.
