  • You look like a nerd

  • This guy reminds me of Gilbert Lowe from "Revenge of the Nerds". °,°

  • can i remove my laptop asus 15'6 screen its folded in half the entire top pice of the laptop and use a monter insted will the laptop still run if its removed

  • Some of those power cells in laptop batteries are still working. I have covered many battery needs in my electrical projects by using them again. But You must be carefull when extracting them. :-)

  • @w2mful

My 2005 laptop was just as easy to rip apart. You just have to poke around, and figure out which screws to take apart first.

  • holy crap its hank/willam green !!!!

  • hm... maybe i can reuse my dads old laptop... easy money for free XD

  • ok, we have a screen, some ram... but would it be possible to turn that keyboard into a usb keyboard? and same with the touchpad? Not that a keyboard or a touchpad is too expensive. It's just that everything's here. Why not reuse it?

  • i new u were from vlog brothers

  • you know i know it, very sensitive information your passwords you "PORN"

  • i have a 1600 watt and 1200watt psu for my watter cooling and my 4 graphic cards they use more power than everything in my house put together

  • dont you like own youtube and run vidcon?

  • That's it. That's how to make sure we get the best value from what we buy.

Thanks to you now I know where to unscrew the lcd!

Actually I've found a manufacturer of LCD controllers, it is Njytouch.

  • YAY! Handy to know!

    DFTBA Hank! xx

  • Stop cutting the gaps in the video out. Makes you look like those attention seeking whores.. yeah.

  • Thanks for the vid. As I have that same laptop from back in grad school, I too will be selling all this stuff soon. I apologize in advance for the men who buy my hard drive off of ebay, and find all the sexy photos of the guy I was dating back in the 90s. Sorry.

  • you seem really unsanitary

  • Never get rid of anything to do with PCs. Stuff fails and a collection of bits can save a lot of headaches in the future. If you don't know how to securely wipe a hard drive then you are better off storing it, preferentially next to big magnets. This is especially true of windows boxes, which just seem to love storing private data in oddly named temp files.

  • LMAO "Your passwords, your porn..."

  • @C3Z4rtv its funny cause its true

  • that is a joke, how much you can get for that stuff.... $25 for RAM, you can get about 1gb RAM DDR2 not 256 mb, and that hard drive is worth like $10 not $100, I understand that was in 2007 but w.e.

  • son of a bitch suck my dick piece of shit piggod

  • COOL 8D

  • It is really sad you are such an asshole in the way you present yourself. What a complete fucking goof you are. You're just a slimy, greasy piece-of-shit-human-being...in the way you talk to people.

  • The "board" on your harddrive is often removable (so you can swap harddrives), Atleasat in my antique dell lappy it is.

  • Very Cool thaks a LOT

  • lol i thought u were a middle aged woman

  • Thankyou Macaulay.

  • send an old laptop to Indonesia is a good thing.

Some good working pentium III class (500mhz) still can fetch around 100US$ on the market here.

So expect to get around 70US$ each, but I'm sure shipping & handling would be a lot more than that; well of course if u can get a whole container of working-2nd-hand laptop from various brand (as long as it works), u can easily make thousands of dollars profit.

  • mahh porn i will never part with it

  • -1 for handling the ram without any anti static protection

  • I know it is an old video but generally if you pull off the board on the harddrive there are pins underneath. it was with my old dell anyway.

  • you should have sold the whole laptop on ebay for parts you could have made like 300$ if your lucky lmao.

  • @jheibertz 300$ where do you live? thats like 50$ rofl.

  • my porn :O

  • Isn't that PATA? you can find one...I haven't found one lol

  • 5 stars then you burped. 4/5 :)

  • You... ARE.... THE!!!.... NEW.... BILL GATES!!!!

  • take the little bord of the hard drive u idiot, the ide is under it

  • @xXTaNodel408Xx

arent there bus converters for this kind of drive to turn it into a USB-based external drive?

  • for the hdd you can remove the boards and put in a new hdd I did this on my dell 600m laptop

  • Sell me Ur HDD ! :)

  • I hate videos that just keeps pausing.. one minute you're in the left, one minute you're in the right. I mean, don't you feel stupid saying something.. Holding up a laptop "heres my dell" and moving somewhere else to say another 5 words and then when you're done, cut out the pausing?

  • 1/5. Will watch your video, but first, I had to tell you that. People like you.. like that little stupid cube thing with your username at the beginning of the video.. piss me off. Just fucking get on with the video. Wasted 5 seconds of my life.

  • "Hurray!" lol great vid.

  • Awesome idea! Totally!!

  • you fuckface,

Sungkawa, dell buys a lot of parts from Indonesia, and they also send their uesd items back there. you fucking FLAMING PIECE OF SHIT FUCKING FAGGOT SO SHUT THE HELL UP BEFORE YOU GET CUT OPEN WITH A FUCKING RAZOR

  • pretty good video thanks man

  • you can also take off the keyboard and sell that on ebay

  • @krisacef yes thats what I said.

  • shutup about Indonesia you ignorent nerd

    we dont take used crap

    we have our own equipment

  • I love the end bit - great Video ;o)

  • whooa.....pill box thing for a screw case...whoda thought...

  • There is so much more that you can sell from that laptop. If you broke it down more.

  • like what i am actually trying this with a sony vio

  • Dude, that "board" on the hard drive is just an adapter, you can pull it off. It has IDE pins just like anything else. Dummy

  • You could get something for that keyboard. You'd only want to do this if the computer had some sort of motherboard fault or something. Also what about the dvd drive.

  • i subscribed within the first 15 seconds

  • i had the same exact dell laptop about 8 months ago it wouldn't boot up so i took it to my neighbor not much of a help there .... So then i decided to bye a MacBook 13.3 inch aluminum laptop. when the time comes how would i do what you just did with my MacBook? thanks

  • why didnt he just format the hard dirve and reinstall windows xp.Thats why it wont boot up. windows messed up.

  • because taking it apart is way funner =P

  • ya it called an sata to ide andaptor it pulls off your not going to break it just pull

  • You have a wife?

  • yes the interchange dongle on the back of the harddrive is removable. some IBM I-series machines use this as well...

  • 5/5 and fav`d! Thats some useful info right there!

  • whats the thing that turns the internal hardrive into a external

  • cool vid, funny!

  • You can take that fucking board off the harddrive!

I got so aggravated watching your video, you are a very annoying person.

  • Good video.

  • Hey about that harddrive. chances are if u give the board a tug it will come off and expose the ATA pins. ive seen this with 7 + laptops ive worked on. try it give it a little tug.

  • Depends where the buyer is...

  • This is well presented and useful.

    Quick question -

Does the carbon footprint get reduced or increased by separating the components then posting them to different e-bay buyers?

  • im glad i watched this i didnt think about the screen, would a gateway 17 inch screen be wanted? And isnt there a way u can sell/ reuse the external dvd drive?

  • "your passwords, your porn..."

  • I was wondering if its possible to take that monitor you just happened to get freed from the laptop, and i dont know turn it into some kind of display for use on a desktop computer, or get some rca input jacks in there for use with like a vcr or something of that sort?

  • I'll keep this in mind whenever I get a laptop, and whenever said laptop stops working ;)

  • cool vid,I live in Japan and am amazed at what i find All the time in bins , i build up pc`s for nothing and yeah sometimes the hdd is slow but who cares if it is just for downlooading a movie on to watch later that night then delete , repeat process everday or give the pc to somebody who only uses the net for email and save them somn bucks and from buying more trash .seeya

  • You know, you can pull that "board" off of the hard drive to expose the pins.

  • Yeah that right Ecogeek- it just pulls right off NO fuss. If your HD is getting slow or loud it might not be a good idea to use it as an external HD- They will mechanically fail over time. BUT if it was working fine its a great idea! Hate to see anyone lose all there stuff. A mechanical failure makes it ALMOST impossible to get your data back.

  • haha egogeek if ur a real geek you wouldve known that

  • Dude you make me laugh, thanks a lot fr the info!

  • so i should get my old laptop back from my sister...hmmm

  • lets chat

  • OH another thing for you. Rather then just give away the final piece that has the keys on it take off all of the keys cause sometimes I find my keys fall off and can never find them lol and it was like 50 bucks or so to have them replaced...

  • The "so-called Board" on the hard drive, is actually just an adapter that slips off and exposes the pins on the IDE drive...

  • Young bill gates ?

  • Hmm interesting, now I just have to get into certain someones garage, take all his 70 old laptops and 'reuse' them.

StumpleUpon, just got it now I love it.

  • Most hard drives that "dont have pins" actually is just an adapter that can be pulled off and expose the pins.

  • The video was wonderfully presented so that made it more fun to watch. Not that it wasn't fun enough - learnt a lot from it!

  • it's HANK!!!! sorry, bit slow there ;-) actually "sumbleupon"ed this video!

  • Epic intro.

  • HA HA

Im in yer landfill leachin into yer soil

  • haha lol Nicely Done! the randomness of frames you used was wonderfull!

  • I get the screen off my old laptop much easier as its just attached with a piece of ribbon cable.

  • LOL, theres a fucking screw in my toe thats classic... Great vid tho, dunno why i watched this i dont have a laptop but LOL

  • You sir, have the same toolkit that I do!

  • why so much stoppin the camera, every two seconds a new clip starts, wats up with dat?

  • why not sell the freaking computer on eBay ???

  • Because parts normally sell for more than the device in it's whole.

  • Yup, thats what i was going to said, it's just remove my hard drive from my old laptop, without knowing how, and i think maybe this stuff can be removed, guess what, you can, just pull it, and buy that hard drive case and use it as external HD, as i'm doing it right know.

  • your a geek a true geek but your cool

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH I HAVE THE SAME EXACT LAPTOP AND I WAS UPGRADING TO VISTA IN A NEW LAPTOP. YOU SAVED ME AVOUT $200 THANKS A BUNCH. CAN You make a video for a DESKTOP? i have a 10 yr old desktop w/ 1gb ram and a 12 GB hard drive. I really want to use the 12 GB as an external hard drive. Its 3.5 inches not 2.5 since its a desktop but 12GB is a lot, more than what i use in a regular computer. SO I REALLY NEED A VID FOR A DESKTOP! PLZ!! THANKS ANYWAYS! ;)

  • His name is Hank GREEN!?! Are you serious? Thats like an oil tycoon being called Fred Driller.

  • hillarious and informative

  • super cool. hey is there a way to reuse that screen for something els? like connect it to maybe a xbox or something to make it a portable screen? just wondering.

  • wow, that was really interesting.

  • OMG, Hank, I totally have a similar Dell Laptop! Fun! Thanks so much!

    DFTBA!

  • Hey thanks man. I have that very computer. I'm so gonna ebay those pieces.

  • technology *BURRRP* for the environment lol

  • dumb ass thats where most of our electrons are made thats why he says indonesia the parts are shipped there and dell re-uses them.

  • our electrons are made there?

    lol :)

  • you dftba hank. (change dont to didnt... wOOt) i love you blog. ecogeek for life!

  • Brilliant! :) (UK)

  • ugh, people, all laptop harddrives will work for the external thing he is talking about, if you dont see pins, just pull of that black piece that is sticking out!

  • You can take those pins off and re-use them in any laptop

  • "I'm in ur landfill, leechin into ur groundwater" HAHAHAAHAHA LMAO :D

  • good...effort buddy...at least somebody is doing something constructive......go ahead...

  • YOU'd BE STUPID TO JUST SEND A LAPTOP BACK FOR FREE!!! EBAY EBAY EBAY EBYA BABY!

  • i thaught it was ok

  • you can pull that board off you idiot..

  • hehe i like recyling laptops! old laptops like 500mhz and 128mb ran run xp easy . Most ppl dont use the graphics, cpu or ram of new laptops. Most ppl use email and browse the net! OLD LAPTOPS STILL CAN BE USED!

  • Good and informative. Thanks!

  • also always look at your motherboard cos most of the time you can take out the procesor and u could get some money for that aswell

  • do you know that the black thinh on the end of the hardrive is only an adaptor there are little pins under it

just pull it off i had one the same from an old ACER

  • Woot! Thanks! we had 2 old labtops and we made money out of it! Easy money!

  • save allot of time and just sell the hole thing as a parts or repair on ebay . Pull the hard drive out ( put the enclosure back in ) and still get about $200 .

  • wonderfull... I have two desktops and a lap top... must look into this ebay thingy... that's geek

  • if you own an expensive laptop, for example a mini sony vaio or something, the keyboard is definitely not something you should throw away if it's in great condition.

i know this because the keyboard on my vaio broke and i needed a new one...

    those things are in demand

  • isnt your monitor totally useless considering it now has no video controller, I wish you could re-use a laptop lcd, but ya just can't. video controllers for old LCDs are hard to come by, unless u grab the entire mobo. I dunno, maybe Im wrong, but I doubt it.

  • Quite often, someone will break their LCD but the rest of their computer is fine. When EcoGeeky lists his LCD on eBay, someone who has the same model laptop or one that uses a compatible controller can buy it to replace their broken or defective LCD. Ages ago, I used to buy broken laptops and repair them, and replacing the LCD was one of the most common repairs I did.

  • One little tip about the hard disk.

Do multiple zero fills on it to ensure that any data you don't want others to have'll be effectively wiped.

For laptop drives, this means you'll need an adaptor to use it with standard PC connections. You'll also have to visit the drive manufacturer's website to obtain utilities that work with the drive to perform the zero fill (which is sometimes incorrectly called low-level formatting).

  • Intersonus903 how do you do multiple zero's? Could you explain it?

  • A full zero fill is where every single cluster on the platters in the hard drive are written in zeros, effectively wiping out all existing partitions on the drive.

It's hard to explain how to do it because this kind of operation is performed using utilities software from the drive manufacturer and each brand has different ways of doing it. The manufacturer of a drive you want to zero fill is better at providing specific instructions.

  • Thank you Intersonus903. I'm still confused, but kinda understand. Sorta... lol... a 44 magnum pistol shot through the hard drive will do the same I think. It might be more of a cave man solution, but it would work...

  • Just so long as you hit the platters.

  • Although, you would obviously not be able to sell the drive.

  • Wow...you're absolutely my hero...thanks for that bit. I'll redo that section of the video and repost

    thanks!

  • you can take off the 'connection board' from the hard drive easily instead of 'fuck'.
