@samadamsronzio To compare a great man like Washington to any king, however great, is to compare a lion to an ass. The sooner the last monarch chokes on his own bile, the better off this world will be.
The art of politics is appeasement. A great personality goes a long way. Lincoln had it, Reagan had it, Clinton had it, and several other presidents were able to coax their enemies into submission with jokes, smiles and firm handshakes. Obama is a great orator, but I'm still undecided as to his abilities to negotiate. He has confidence, yes, but he might be lacking trust. Slick Willy could lie to your face and believe he'd get away with it, and even when he 'was' caught, we pardoned him. ;)
@mev186 Winston Churchhill was also a tool. The Republicans running for office are also tools and many religious fanatics to boot. We have no choice. American is firmly in the grasp of Israeli lobby and will act according to how they want them to act. Hence the continuous droning of " what about Israel? " asked by every single debate moderator so far. It's disgusting. Obama had Emanuel as his right hand man. He fought in the first Guld war under an Israeli and not an American flag.
Fascism and Communism are very similar. Fascism is where the state and big industry join together in a partnership and Communism is where the state and industry are one and same. Both are of the socialist tree of economics and also involve the government controlling every aspect of your life. Hence why the Nazi party was called National Socialist, etc. They also both despised free market capitalism and individual liberty. The individual does not count in either.
It amuses me to see how conservatives and teabaggers are imagining themselves to be heirs to Founding Fathers, who were ultra progressives and products of Age of Enlightenment. They are rather heirs to Tories and Royalists.

@timcp1 Why should "religion" always refer to a system of beliefs based on the supernatural and on dogma? Humanity itself is religion. Theology is superstition. The founding fathers were deeply religious in a humanist way, but not theists and most certainly not christians.

"The general principles on which the fathers achieved independence were. . . . the general principles of Christianity.”—John Adams to Thomas Jefferson on June 28, 1813--John Adams, The Works of John Adams, Second President of the United States, Charles Francis Adams, editor (Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1856), Vol. X, pp. 45-46
I belive Adams One uped Franklin in the last seen....."Well, you maybe as patient and accommodating as you like doctor but, for myself I will not voluntarily put on the chains of Franc while I'm struggling to throw off those of Great Brittan!!!"
@lethrneck4 Sorry to say but John Adams did not understand diplomacy. He often did what Franklin said men did to their folly: Voiced their opinions and then caused dissent, anger, animosity and sorrow.
agreed diplomacy is one thing, but you can tell in this series how low the french think the americans are as far as being "sophisticated". adams was right, he wasnt about to throw all the work to break free from england, just to become in debt to france but you are right, adams one downfall was his outspokenness on what he believed, it is probably why so many other of ur founding fathers get far more credit than he does
Washington got all the glory because history wanted american troops to be the cause of our victory, but it was mostly the diplomats in France that did the real winning.
Ben Frabklin may have sumed up John Adams better then anyone else when he said that Adams "was alywas an honest man, often a wise one,but sometimes.......completley out of his senses"
when you have various regional accents in england, like cornish, etc tec.and mix them up,with other european accents at the time, like dutch, german and they all spoke english, thats what i think happened,as the modern american accent is more pronunced, which would explain the change in accents
God, I love this! Can you imagine such a discussion happening today? No, they would be shouting at each other and interrupting constantly, not even bothering to hear what the other says.
@billyguns2 , Are you so sure, Adams had a tight personality, like most of the Adams, a bit on the sour side. Franklin was thoughtful and observed much. While he was capable of anger, his composure was legendary. Witterburn railed at him for 90 minutes in the Privy Chamber and he stood steady. Todays people act differently than they did then.
Andrew Jackson stood his ground took a bullet and killed his opponent. Burr killed Hamilton, Charles Sumner was horsewhipped in the US Senate
they spoke a sort of more British dialect, I wonder when did they started to speak differently and why? Are there still some areas in USA where they still have this accent?
Tangier Island, a small island in the Chesapeake Bay, is very isolated and it is said that the inhabitants speak the same way Americans and Englishmen spoke when they came over in the 1600s. I don't know much about it, but I know linguists from both countries go to the island to study the accent.
@Chuichupachichi , Adams was a man of letters and there are examples when he wrote in great anger and bile. Adams was an unusually intelligent man and in many gathering the most knowledable, but his wisdom at times was suspect.
He was a man of principles and so was his son John Quincy.
John Adams accomplished things with his "principles" that other people could not. He was able to push for an alliance with the Netherlands because of his bullheaded diplomacy. He pushed the envelope for what was right when more seasoned diplomats played weasel.
I rather think the Alliance and the money loan to the U.S. was because of the fourth ( and last ) Englisch Dutch war wich began in 1780 and ended in 1784, after that the Dutch Empire was no longer a 'world - power'. So it was more a case of self-preservation.
Ben Franklin established this nations first spy service in Europe. Its focus was, quite properly - Rome, Her Orders and all of the Royal houses (inclusive of England).
And now, as then, the old Claim applies...Declaro, Constituo, et Affirme.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
It is well known that Benjamin Frankin was a racist. It was not so uncommon at the time. Historians have agreed on this for a long time. Just read the chapter on racial hieararchy in Michael Hunt, Ideology and U.S. Foreign Policy..
Like most people of his period, Franklin initially believed that African slaves and their offspring were inferior to white Europeans and that they couldn't be educated. He began to question his beliefs when he visited a school where young African children were being taught. In 1763, he wrote a letter to an English friend where he stated,
"I was on the whole much pleased, and from what I then saw, have conceived a higher opinion of the natural capacities of the black race, than I had ever before entertained. Their apprehension seems as quick, their memory as strong, and their docility in every respect equal to that of white children."
He owned two slaves for a while & freed them not long after joining the worlds first abolitionists society, which he became president of.
"I fully agree with General Washington, that we must protect this young nation from an insidious influence and impenetration. The menace, gentlemen, is the Jews.
Ben Franklin was a brilliant statesman, men like Adams and Jefferson were brilliant philosophers. We need both, but when it comes to getting things done I listen to the statesman.
@playnowpayl8tr. Franklin was America's everyman. A sceptic, he's the type of guy that works hard and can come out on top. He was welcomed by so many, he was never afriad to experiment. He went vegitarian for a while, taught swimming to the British gents. Freqented whore houses and was intelligent enoug to make enough money to retire in his 40's.
Adams was a lawyer, Franklin a printer. Franklin was in London for the Great London fire and came back and started
I'ven been reading some of Adams's letters...and I don't think he would have treated Dr. Rush that way...not chatting with him a little. They were friends..and in fact Rush helped facilitate reconciliation between Jefferson and Adams
would have been nice if they could have shown more of Ben Rush (he was at the table w/ Franklin)..he was trying to find a remedy for the sick -Yellow Fever??-. I think he actually found a remedy and was trying to treat people afflicted with that while all this was going on
"John Adams" was a miniseries on HBO that came out in 2008. I am actually watching the very end of it right now. It is very good. It is based on the book by David McCullough [which I have also just started}.
I like how they portrayed them with English accents - I'm guessing that often gets overlooked. People tend to forget that the American Revolution was also a transatlantic British civil war.
Ben Franklin Was America's Merlin , George Washington Was King Arthur , and the rest of The Founding Fathers Were The Knights Of The Constitution !

lethrneck4 1 year ago
@lethrneck4 Sorry to say but John Adams did not understand diplomacy. He often did what Franklin said men did to their folly: Voiced their opinions and then caused dissent, anger, animosity and sorrow.

agreed diplomacy is one thing, but you can tell in this series how low the french think the americans are as far as being "sophisticated". adams was right, he wasnt about to throw all the work to break free from england, just to become in debt to france but you are right, adams one downfall was his outspokenness on what he believed, it is probably why so many other of ur founding fathers get far more credit than he does

when you have various regional accents in england, like cornish, etc tec.and mix them up,with other european accents at the time, like dutch, german and they all spoke english, thats what i think happened,as the modern american accent is more pronunced, which would explain the change in accents

God, I love this! Can you imagine such a discussion happening today? No, they would be shouting at each other and interrupting constantly, not even bothering to hear what the other says.
billyguns2 2 years ago 13

Are there still some areas in USA where they still have this accent?
carloncho1607 2 years ago
Tangier Island, a small island in the Chesapeake Bay, is very isolated and it is said that the inhabitants speak the same way Americans and Englishmen spoke when they came over in the 1600s. I don't know much about it, but I know linguists from both countries go to the island to study the accent.

Well, you might find it in the upper class societies in the eastcoast areas. They speak very good, and sometimes in reminds of the brittish accent.

Looks as though if one struck Adams' flint enough times, eventually his mild mannered demeanor would burst into a heated fire
Chuichupachichi 2 years ago
According to the series, he's quite hot headed.
KenMacMillan 2 years ago 2
@Chuichupachichi , Adams was a man of letters and there are examples when he wrote in great anger and bile. Adams was an unusually intelligent man and in many gathering the most knowledable, but his wisdom at times was suspect.
He was a man of principles and so was his son John Quincy.
progressiverebel 1 year ago
John Adams accomplished things with his "principles" that other people could not. He was able to push for an alliance with the Netherlands because of his bullheaded diplomacy. He pushed the envelope for what was right when more seasoned diplomats played weasel.
swainster1 1 year ago
@swainster1

Ben Franklin was a brilliant statesman, men like Adams and Jefferson were brilliant philosophers. We need both, but when it comes to getting things done I listen to the statesman.
YNot1989 2 years ago
I acknowledge Paul G's body of work, but William Daniel's Adams seems more accurate; bold, pushy, confident and self-absorbed.
Nonetheless, I look forward to seeing the whole series someday.

I like how they portrayed them with English accents - I'm guessing that often gets overlooked. People tend to forget that the American Revolution was also a transatlantic British civil war.
