Hello Mark, I am glad to have come across this video of yours. I enjoyed it very much. I have also arranged this song for my cross strung harp. By the way, how light is your Paraguayan harp? Do you other kinds of music such as some early Classical music will sound nicely on this harp? I am looking for a very light diatonic harp (with levers if possible).
@MarkHarmer Mark, I have been speaking to a lady from Morley Harps because my 7 year old daughter is interested in learning to play. By coincidence, a couple of days after I posted my comment on your video she gave me your name as someone in the Cheltenham area who might teach. Do you teach in this area? We are looking at arranging lessons...not immediately but in the near future.
Beautiful! I grew up in Paraguay, and my sister learned to play the Paraguayan harp while we lived there (13 years). My brother and I learned to play guitar. The three of us loved playing Paraguayan music together.
Some Russian romances sound rather similar. Quite lovely. This could also be something that Bach or Vivaldi could have written. Arabesque. Impressive instrument. Is it a chromatic double? Sorry, I can't see or determine.
Gee!!! I remember hearing this song since i was i child, but i never knew its name!!...I found it by looking for "la partida" played by inti illimani.. anyway!! thank you for the name and for this fantastic interpretation! ;)
@zhria0828 Why? Just cause you don't do doesn't mean it can't be done! If someone is self taught and they want and can play with their pinky and sound good then why not?
Where did you learn to play?! My dad plays the Paraguayan harp, seeing as he is from Paraguay lol. He teaches it too, but it's too hard for me! That was great really!
yo just inspired me to play the harp could you send me the link to download and last ? i can already play the guitar and piano would picking up the harp be like starting to learn how to walk again
Hi! You're not wrong there - the back of the harp is solid so you have to reach up from a hole right at the bottom. I have never had to change a string (yet) so I don't know exactly how hard it is. Not looking forward to that!
I'm not an expert, indeed I've never seen a real paraguayan harp, (I get my first this week), but wouldn't you just thread the string through the hole from the outside, push it down to a place inside, near the base where you can easily reach and tie it, (however it's done), then pull the string back up from the top, cut it, and tie it onto the tuning keys?
ohh my gosh this song is so... so... so.. i don't know but you play it so nice I want to learn to play the harp for a very long time but c never ould afford one and didn't really want to take the time but this just gave me the extra boost I needed. I am going to save my money and get lessons. Thank you so much.
The "I can't afford it" is a excuse we all use. We have to realize that while yes, a expensive instrument does sound better, when learning the instrument, you just need something to practice on. It's when you're at the level of starting to perform for people that you move on and buy a more expensive instrument.
We came to visit this clip because my daughters want to choose an instrument to learn to play. This was an excellent clip in showing the girls how the harp can sound. I think it inspired them.

It was to Paraguay grow up and be the most evoluted country on Latino America, but they started the "Paraguay war" that try to atack my contry (Brazil), Uruguay and Argentina, so we atacked them back, and we almost destroyed them, only 2% of the population on paraguay was male.
So ... it's rare to see a pure paraguaian.

Thanks - and I hope they are inspired to learn! It's a great instrument. The Paraguayan harp (as here) is quite specialised - do have a listen to some others too to get an idea of the different types. If you choose an instrument that sounds good, it'll be more rewarding to practise on, and they will spend more time playing. You can always hire them too, if you're not sure. Hope that helps and good luck with it!

As you already play an instrument, you will already have an understanding of how music works (notation etc). I don't play the flute or cello so can't say if it's easier or harder, but if you play the piano then the harp's quite easy to adapt to. Don't know where you are but a good small starter harp would be 800+USD - anything much less will probably not be worth buying. Good harps will always be easy to sell again if you don't get on with it. Hope that helps!
