  • This was the first video I saw in complete ASL back in 2008. I learned the song and, as it turns out, my boyfriend's father and his wife are deaf. I was able to keep up with some that was signed between his deaf father and ASL-learned hearing mother. It was the first time that he had met his father in person, as he lives on the other side of the country. I am so happy that I was able to understand. Your video got me back into ASL. We are now engaged. I am now learning to sign my vows. Thank you!

  • Ty.. :) This was the VERY FIRST Song I ever did in Asl... :D

  • one of the best one I have seen. Easy to follow thank you so much for doing this video. Is it ok if I make a copy for my students who are in Junior High School in Japan? Part of the study that they do in English is a basic sign language section of their book to show them about communication.

  • @oblufire: Sure, but you should know, I was only in ASL 1, I believe. One or two, when I did this. It's really word for word. I'm glad you like it but looking at it now, I don't think it's that great. I also used AUSL for the main verse too. But if you want to use it, I have absolutely no problem at all with that, I just wanted to let you know this ahead of time. Thanks for the nice comment! =)

  • You did a great job, but you are signing the word "like" wrong for this concept. You should be signing "same". This is in the very beginning of the song.

  • I love it :)

    5 thumbs. Up :D

  • hmm im taking asl 1 also this year n i gotta say as much as you mixxed signs your signing is really good im impressed

  • Thank you. I'm now in ASL 3. With being in college each level of ASL only lasts about 3 months. It's a lot different than high school. I thought it was at least. In college you tend to be pushed as hard as they can push you to learn they cram that whole year into only a small amount of time. Im glad you enjoyed my video. I need to make more sometime, Im just not a fan of editing so I'm not sure when that will happen lol. Thanks for the comment.

  • i just realized that the "you're not alone" part is different from the sign language of darren hayes in the mtv of this song. I'm just asking if this is the AuSL part of the video? By the way, it's a very good song. And i hope you can do more songs in sign language

  • Its funny you asked the whole chours is AUSL except for the word alone and thats because I couldnt see it but I watched his video a few times just now and saw that he used what looks like the sign for "only one." I dont know AUSL so I'm not sure it has another meaning or not but thats what it looks like to me. Everything between the chours is ASL though. I also do hope to make more videos I Ill admit I'm so lazy when it comes to making videos I like making them but hate editing them.

  • @ativeanaer darren misses out loads of words but i still cant keep up i have written down the words he does but and i still cant keep up sign is so hard especially to music im gonna learn it

  • it was awesome, but my one piece of constructive criticism would be not to sign so literally, like, not every word. its more about the concepts, especially considering that asl [and i guess ausl too] rely on different syntax than english.

  • I would love to help everyone learn this song but I am saying no for two reasons. The first reason is because this song is partially in ASL and partially in AUSL "Australian Sign Language" and the second and more important reason is becasue I am in the process of learning ASL myself and don't feel comfortable making a tutorial. I would feel really bad if I taught someone the wrong signs. Once I get into higher classes I may consiter making a tutorial video in the future though.:)

  • it was great for an ASL one student i don't think i could have done that well in ASL 1

What i would suggest though is that you use more conceptual signs...less of a word for word translation

like in the chorus "fall apart" becomes cry...because literally 'fall apart' doesn't make much sense.

its important to find ways of expressing the more ambiguous language used in songs without using a literal translation.

other than that your signs were clear and understandable...overall good job

  • Thank you. We are working on glossing now. I can gloss on paper but I don't think I can pull it out of my head quick enough yet to do it in music or conversation yet, but I also wanted to try signing more true ASL eventually. I understand what you mean by using the non-literal words. I actually made this before I started ASL I. I will try to do this next time I make a video. Thank you for the advice and comment!

  • wow I totally loved this, thank you, though I'm confused on the "if you need to crash" part since the song is super fast. I'm trying to get that, though thank you ever so for doing this, keep up the great work, I'm sure there will be someone who truly benefits from this.

  • Hello, thank you for commenting. If you want to learn this part and need help with it, I can try to discrbe it through a message if your kinda familliar with sign language or I can show you on webcam in slow motion. I havn't gotten far in ASL so I don't know if it's right... that part you were talking about was actually Austrailian sign language. but I can try to help you. No promises on correctness though lol. Thanks again!

  • It was beautiful :)

  • Thank you. Input is always great. I'm only in ASL I right now so it's really nice to hear from other people how my signing really is, since It's a little early for me to tell myself.

  • Thank you! I'm hoping to record two more songs in two weeks after summer quarters ends.

  • loved it
