How can people keep saying there's "No magic in Middle-Earth" when there are Dragons, Balrogs, Gods, Demi-Gods, Shape-shifters, magical artifacts, mention of sorcery, etc, etc, etc....
@JankyToe I've not heard it said that there is no magic - but all the magic there is in LotR comes from a select few characters called the Maia. Gandalf was one, Sauron another, Melkor yet another.
@DraumurionLawnmower I thought Melkor was the most powerful of them. Obviously he could be defeated by another Vala but I believe he was the most podent.
@DraumurionLawnmower They really don't say that Gandalf is a Maia. They only say that Gandalf and the other wizards were created to give Gorgoroth/Sauron some competition and to help the free people of Middle-Earth. Correct me if i'm wrong.
@krunske You're right, but Tolkein did specifically say the five wizards were Maia. They were servants of the Valar in valinor, and they get their "magical" power directly from the Valar. The one exception is Sauron, who was a servant of Morgoth, and is just as potent a sorceror as Gandalf or Saruman, but he gets his magic directly from the ring - which is why he is next to powerless without it.
@krunske Gandalf's original name as a Maia was Olorin, he has a role in the very early ages of the world as you can read in The Sillmarillion. In Lord of the Rings Gandalf himself speaks of being Olorin once. As for Sauron, he had been taught by Melkor/Morgoth himself in the art of black magic, so his powers have developed much further than those of normal Maia, but he remains a Maia nonetheless. Keep in mind the Balrogs are also Maia spirits, thus Sauron was never able to tame the one in Moria.

Would love to see the Silmarillion made into a movie but you would need another trilogy - 3 hours each to be able to effectively make it a respectable representation of the stories in the book. I think it would overshadow "The Lord of the Rings" pretty easily.
@rossapher24 The Silmarillion takes place before LOTR. Though not necessary to understand LOTR, I would still suggest reading The Hobbit, then LOTR and then the Silmarillion and Children of Hurin. I think everything would come together more easily in that order.
LOTR is fantastic OBVIOUSLY, but reading the Silmarillion brings a whole other level to it. Not only that but it's an incredible "mirror" to mythology. This is the most epic book Tolkien ever wrote. Took the guy 50 years of writing notes and he died before it was finished. If you have not read this book do it. Stop watching this clip, go and buy a copy and read it. I've just finished reading it for the fourth time, and just writing this makes me want to read it again!
Where is the final text quoted from? I don't recognise that from the published version of the Silmarilion, so it must be from one of the earlier versions?
crwnv i agree with u m8, but a lot of the other stuff that is mentioned is also very important, and im sure if a trilogy would be made, a lot of the stuff would need to be included, for one thing the creation of the silmarils (basically the bacjkground info on why the noldor were in middle earth, etc), otherwise the separate stories would make little sense. further, one would need to tie the three stories together as well as make a link to the LOTR trilogy, (lay of luthien & fall of gondolin)
@nerzhul23 yeah, guess u r right, but that just makes it less possible for filming... if u want, read my response to feanordae, it sums up most of my thoughts on the matter, so i wouldn't have to repeat myself...
This is much better than the others that just piece together clips from lotr. Of course if they could compress and alter LOTR into three films, I'm sure they could get a good part of this book onto the screen as well, but it would be a huge writing task. I also think someone besides Jackson would be better.
@unholyimage they could probably make a trilogy from silmarillion, with each part focusing on the 3 big stories - the fall of gondolin, beren and luthien, and turin turambar... but rest is far from real movie material, it's a true epic novel, not money-driven stuff like most of the stuff published today, which makes it a great reading, but nearly impossible to turn into a film!! u need the main characters, a basic plot, and the setting, and there's simply too much stuff mentioned in the book...
not to mention most of it is a bloody mess looking at it from an editor or filmwriter's point of view =P would be tricky indeed to film..like the bible in several ways
@FeanorDae well, it is the bible, for Middle Earth... :)
the more i think about it the more impossible it seems - the guy above said it right, a lot more stuff needs to be mentioned, as for the story to function... a nightmarish task for any director, and with little potential to earn money, it's far from possible as film... possibly in an anime version, just with english audio from the start, and then do some 100 or so episodes, covering the whole story...
@MrLordoffantasy a few yrs back and i'd say it was impossible to do it properly, with the budget and resources at the disposal of the TV companies, but now, after seeing the trailers for the game of thrones, i think that HBO and BBC are near the stage where they'll be able to produce such a series in a way which will make the fans happy, and still draw new audiences...
@MrLordoffantasy of course not now, i said they're near, but still, 5 yrs is a lot closer than never! :D and, actually, you were quite good with that assessment - the Hobit would be reaping the last of it's profits in that period, while the game of thrones serial would, by that time, probe the market and find out whether there's a big enough audience for such a TV show... now, if only some producers are listening in... :D
Question for elf fans: given all the deaths in battles and combat by male warriors, and the fact that elves are immortal, can anyone tell me why there are not many, many more females alive than males? I assume equal numbers of each sex are born.
the Sauron armor in the movie is completely based on the Morgoth armor from that Fingolfin vs Morgoth image.
Hey, ANY OF YOU GUYS who like Silmarillion, you should check the album NIGHTFALL ON MIDDLE EARTH, by Blind Guardian. The whole album tells the story of the Silmarillion. (its heavy metal, so not all of you may like, but its still worth checking out).
For the Fingolfin vs Morgoth battle fans, check the son TIME STANDS STILL...
@DrRipper19, not one movie but each story (The Children of Húrin, Beren and Luthien, The Voyage of Eärendil..etc) could be it's own movie, and then it would be a movie series.
The hobbit will be out soon. And Peter Jackson is getting the rights to a Children of Hurin film. But i think they should leave this as it is. No film could ever encapture the magic of this tale.
I heard Christopher Tolkien finished up one of his dad's old Middle Earth manuscripts. It's called The Children of Hurin, I think.
