Restricting a law-abiding citizen's ability to defend themselves is a big part of being a free citizen. It isn't the whole picture but it is a large part of being a free citizen. I shouldn't have to depend on the government to protect me from domestic dangers.
Also take into consideration that there are citizens in countries under tyranny that have a total inability to overthrow the tyrants. Why? They had gun ownership taken away. They are helpless.

I'm well and truly aware of the fact that there are indeed corrupt policeman today; just recently it's come to light that Ali Dizaei, a commander in the london met, had been taking bribes, drugs and even spying on behalf of the Iranian government. It's the cliche "fuck the police" mentality that I'm criticising here because, contrary to popular belief and congruent with your argument: not every policeman IS corrupt; there are some very genuine, law-abiding officers on the streets today.

Just like MacPhersons report the police are not (or were not) "Institutional racist", I'll agree that not all police are corrupt and nasty b*st*rds but... many "genuine, law-abiding officers" do indeed 'stretch', 'deny' or 'emit' evidence here and there to enable the police to smell of roses in court. i.e. not all evidence of an incident is recorded and passed to the prosecutor.
And that is corruption, small, but it is still corrupting open and transparent Justice.
