  • There isn't anything you can put on your hair that can increase growth. One thing, however, that a ton of women think is that their hair grows slow when in reality, it's just breaking off.

  • ur video really touched me. Thanks so much for making it. I been natural almost 10 years but have slow growing thin natural hair. It can be very discouraging when my hair doesn't look right after putting so much effort into it. tk care

  • @nappyqueen86

Yes, I feel the same way. For ladies like us, it is just taking it one day at at time and refusing to obsess about it. That is why I like protective styles because then i don't have to look at my hair! Take care, lady!

  • What a wonderful video...thanks for sharing..Im a slow grower too!

  • @watchfuleye2008

Slow growers unite! I am a little mad at my slow-growing hair right now!

  • Thank you for this video! It was simple but genius in the frankness and genuineness of the info you offered. I will recommend this video to all of my friends. Even those that have expedient hair growth. The message is so universal. Accept and address, don't obsess!

  • @lvr2lvd

You are welcome! I am glad that it may help others "accept and address, don't obsess." (I LOVE THAT!)

  • Your vid is such a blessing to me. I remember being in tears when I lost patches of hair when I was diagnosed with seborrhea dermatitis. There are not many on YT that understand that no matter what some of us do, we still won't have the kind of growth we see with some people. Instead, I have chosen to focus on working out, eating healthier, and losing a few pounds. I realize that there are more important things to worry about. I figure if it gets to bad then I'll just start wearing wigs.

  • @Ravenpriestess

Thank you for taking the time to write this! I am so sorry to hear about your hair issue. It IS very discouraging when you don't see the same rate of growth as others. I was feeling a little sorry for myself tonight! However, I shook it off and moved on. There ARE more important issues and I love how you are focusing on changing/improving things you CAN control. We have no control over how slow or fast our hair grows and must make our peace with that.

  • All of these tips were good but Tip #2 and #4 actually made me cry. Ive felt this way so many times! Thank you for sharing your tips and advice for overcoming such obstacles. Being natural is just as much mental and emotional as it is physical.

  • @Alexandriakiel

Hey lady. Awwww, I am sorry you teared up, but I am glad my video touched you. I have struggled with my natural hair and you are right, it has been a mental and emotion adjustment. There are times I still want to slap a relaxer on my hair and call it a day. However, my hair is stronger than it has ever been and I have come to like - even sometimes love :-) - it.

  • This is one of the most important and best videos on hair that I have seen on YT. Thank you so much!!

  • @cheathamk

Well...wow. Thank you so much for saying that. I was only sharing my experience and I am glad so many people have responded kindly. It has helped me see that I am not alone.

  • I want to thank you SOOOOOOO MUCH!!! I have been feeling this way very often. I wish more people with slow growing and not so long hair broadcasted videos like this! but they dont and we still feel discouraged! THANK YOU!

  • @Morenax26

You are welcome! Yes, natural hair does not mean you are singing and running through fields of flowers, never to have a single problem again. (heehee) There are problems with all types of hair and I am glad you appreciated my story. Thank you for commenting.

  • I totally agree with you. I started out natural with a fade back on 1/21/10. as of today my hair is about 5 to 6 inches long. so i decided back in jan. of this year to wear nothing but braids. I have to say my hair grows better with braids. I also stop using commercial products and went back to using just coconut oil shea butter etc... I no longer buy products anymore. so in dec. of this year i will see how much more my hair has grown. thanks I love your channel Smooches

  • @TrulyUrulyNappyMe

Hi there! It sounds like you have a good regimen for optimum hair growth. I think yarn twists work well for me, too - less manipulation and as long as I keep them clean...it is all good.

  • "50-11" love this saying...lol... a break from YT?!?!?! what?!?!!? then we wouldn't watch you anymore....lol...everything in moderation...thanks for sharing

  • @dkblck1958

LOL! You are right, but still I stand by my words! =) But I totally agree...moderation to cut down on the bad hair thoughts!

    Thanks for watching, lady!

  • i've always thought you were beautiful, but looking at your pics, OMG you are gorgeous and so cute!!! i agree with you on all you said, i went through a phase of envying others' hair so much that i couldn't see my own hair as pretty. Now i can envy "healthily". You are so sweet :) x

  • @louloumatou

Oh lady, you are just so sweet! This put a huge smile on my face! I can't imagine you envying anyone...your hair is GORGEOUS.

  • @NappyNFree

(Hard responding to previous comment using mobile)

I have a vitamix. I thoroughly scrub root and wash leaves. Entire thing, raw, goes in (cut up to assist blender). My nails have to be cut down every week when I change polish. Search also Mini Beet Protocol. Beauty in a bulb. Lol!

  • @trini467

Okay, my dad bought one of the Montell Williams' blenders, which I think is similiar to the vitamix. He decided he didn't want it, so I inherited it. I think I am going to see if I I can blend up some veggie shakes! Thanks for this!

  • Thanks so much for the encouragement! I am learning so much from your videos. I truly appreciate you sharing your journey. I just started viewing youtube videos and I'm glad I found your videos because I feel like your hair journey is so close to mine. My hair grows slowly and I'm ok with that. I just want to learn how to take care of what I have and not stress over length. Once again, THANK YOU!!! Love the vids:)

  • @lovelyrn3

No, thank you! I really appreciate this comment. We are all learning...it really is a journey and I am glad that I can help!

  • i know you've accepted your hair growth but have you ever tried Biotin or MSM? I 've heard good stories on based on hair growth.

  • @EpitomeWhatever

Girl, let me tell you! I started taking biotin and MSM in April 2010 and had to stop in Dec 2010. The supplements caused SEVERE colon "problems" (heehee) and I ended up having to go to the doctor. She blamed the creatine, but I have been taking creatine for almost a decade and never had problems. Once I stopped taking the biotin and MSM, all was well.(phew!) I have to say, though, I didn't see a big increase in growth, either. *sigh*

    That was TMI...I know. I know! :-)

  • Hey there how is everybody doing? I am giving NappyNFree along with ALL of you who have responded to this video a standing ovation. Don't compare your hair to anyone else, God gave each of us what we have because He saw it fit, we may not like it but we should. Put it this way, if it is good enough for Him it should be good enough for us. Well said NappyNFree, well said.

  • @LadyJacqueline07

    Thank you, lady!

  • I agree with everything you said and feel the same, great vid, my key point to al has been know your hair and its DNA this lets you know what your hair is and not compared to others hair

  • @sistersotrue28

Well said! Can't fight DNA and you have to accept what you have.

  • Hey chicka! Very well put! I was the fro queen til I found YT now the only time I see my hair out is on wash weekend. I like my hair out but my hair hate being out so my hair wins lol...GOOD JOB!

  • @wladytray

Thank you! I love protective styles, too! I play in my hair tooooo much!

  • This is why I love your channel. I had to like :) your hair is beautiful missy - this is a very encouraging vid and I agreed with everything you had to say x

  • @QueenChezabelle

Aww, thank you so much for saying this! I was sharing my thoughts based on my experience and I am glad that so many have been so positive!

  • I just found your videos and all I have to say is WOW! So informative and uplifting. I'm transitioning and my hair is THIN and slow growing and I just needed so common sense straight talk and I have been blessed. Thanks for the video..I look forward to more~Z

  • @kellyz2908

I like that...common sense, straight talk! I need people to talk to me like that, too. Just tell me like it is...I may not like but I have to accept and respect it!

  • Good Sound advice!(0:

  • @AllisonLPayne

    Thank you!

  • Yes, I agree with TheCoilWhisperer. You have the sweetest spirit and such a joy to watch.

    P.S

Sorry it took so long, but that Kali-tone Rhassoul Clay conditioner worked like a charm. My hair has a darker tinge to it and seems like its breaking less and less after each use. Definitely a keeper! Thx to you =)

  • @ExoticByNature

Awww, so sweet! Thank you! The KP and rhassoul clay worked?! Yay!! I am so glad that it worked for you, too! I swear these powders are so amazing!

  • THIS THE BEST VIDEO I HAVE SEEN ON THE YT! Thank you so much for making this video. You are completely on point. Watching this video is like talking to a friend about hair. I feel EVERYTHING that you are saying in the video. I have made the choice to get rid of the notion of having hair like somebody else. It aint gonna happen no matter what I do to my hair and techniques that I use. I will not fight shrinkage, slow hair growth, and anything else that my hair texture does!

  • @rainbowbrite621

Girl, this was such a sweet comment! The best video? My head is getting sooo big! (heehee - just kidding :-)

Seriously, I am glad that I could help and reaffrim what you already know. We sometimes have temporary insanity as we strive to make our hair do impossible things, but we eventually come around and accept it for what it is and what it can do.

Thanks for watching and for leaving such kind words, friend. :-)

  • Yes, short and informative is what I like, thanks for sharing!

  • @1stlady2u

Thanks, lady! This was my longest vid to date and I was worried it was too much. :-)

  • Awwe, you are so cute as a little one.

  • @lulufullana

LOL! Thank you! I was a RASCAL!

  • I just have to say this: thank you.

  • @afrikanatural

Awww, you are welcome. Thank you so much for watching. I really appreciate it.

  • you are sooo honest! when I watch you its like talking to a old friend. Your honesty and your heart has drawn me to your videos. Keep up the good work. I do not have a lot of experience with youtube, but your certainly one of my favs. Keep it up sister. keep on keeping it REAL!!

  • @luv22beauty

Girl, I am so touched by all the kind comments. I am overwhelmed. I didn't know what to expect when I loaded this video and gosh, it has been wonderful.

    Again, thank you!

  • Thank you for such an encouraging video =) and for all your tutorials! I can see that you're a beautiful person <3

  • @shawnyeng

    Thank you!

  • @NappyNFree. See herdaily.com/health/8752/benefits-of-beetroot-health-skin-hair.html. They ain't lyin'! Must be the silica...look I'm not looking a gift horse in the mouth. LOL!!

  • @trini467

Girrrllll, I just looked at this site. I may have to buy and eat beets. (Too lazy to juice...not even gonna fool myself! :-) Do you eat them out of the can or eat them raw?

  • You are so darn sweet! I'm happy we have your spirit on YT. :-)

  • @TheCoilWhisperer

    Girl! Thank you!

  • @NappyNFree BTW, watching your video yesterday motivated me to twist my hair. I had planned on doing yesterday but got lazy and when 6pm came around I said forget about it but watching your video I thought to myself the day's not over... just get it done. :-) As we all know, one of the blessing of a protective style is you don't have to worry about what you're going to do to your hair for the following days. :-) No, thank you girl!

  • @TheCoilWhisperer

Girl, that is the number one reason why I protective style: I am lazy and love rolling out of bed for work without having to get up 30 minutes early to do my hair!

I am glad I motivated you!

  • Girl you better preach! Your story is mine, I just haven't had the guts to say it...because being natural is supposed to be all roses and my hair doesn't do ANY of the "cool" natural stuff that I went natural hoping to be able to do. But you're right, my hair is mine no matter what I do to it, I need it to do what it does, and just work with it. Thanks for the video girl, very inspiring!

  • @bmw0688

I was scared to say it, too! LOL! But it is the truth. Any hair - relaxed, loced, natural - has its own set of issues. Nothing is all roses (I wish, though! :-). We just have to see the beauty that our hair has...because all natural hair is beautiful. This past summer has been an eye opener for me - I really fell in love with my hair. (I know that sounds silly, but it is the only way to describe how I felt. :-)

  • Now that I've seen this I've always wondered. For ppl who have had a jheri curl back in the day and they wanted to go to a relaxer did they had to go natural first or did they just put a relaxer over their curl? I've never have a jheri or nver will. lol Just wondered.

  • @LilacStar82

    (1) Girl, let me tell you that I had some time switching from a curl to a relaxer! I had to let my hair grow and it took months before I had a good amount of new growth. My hair looked a mess - I was a junior in college and pledging - and was so embarrassed. I remember going to my stylist - hair looked a mess, mind you - and she was hesitating about relaxing it. I was on the verge of screaming when another stylist came over

  • @LilacStar82

    (2) and said, "Go ahead relax her hair." It was one of the best days of my life! LOL!

Now, my college roommate didn't have to go through that drama. She was able to switch from a curl to a relaxer - no problem. I still don't understand how that worked, but that is what she told me.

Sorry that was more than you needed, but you brought back some memories!!

  • Great Vid! You sure was speaking to me. Im a slow grower as well, but not as slow as I thought now that Ive been using the Ayuvedic powders. Its allowing me to retain my length.

Thanks for the reminder to stop comparing self to others.

  • @carmelqt77

Ayurvedic powders are simply amazing! I love them!

  • you are a very beautiful and kind woman...thank you :)

  • @shelski101

    Thank you!

  • Loved this video! So encouraging! Thanks for sharing!

  • @luvnmycoils

    Thank you!

  • Thank you so much for this video. All the things you touched upon rang true for me as I too am a slow hair grower. I always thought that I was doing something wrong because when I look on YT and see all the other naturals with hair past their shoulders and mine is still at my neck...OY! It can be discouraging. I think you're right in recommending protective styles to keep our length in check. I've found that has worked for me. Thanks again for the Excellent Video!!

  • @MissEducates

Yes, even knowing you are a slow grower, it can be discouraging...especially when it is genetics and there is nothing you can really do to remedy it. However, we will perservere!

  • My feelings exactly! It's the truth, from what I've been learning the hair and nails are the last to receive nutrition. So if the diet is poor, hair and nails suffer (putting genetics and illness aside, that is). So I decided to concentrate on nutrition FIRST, then keeping my hair protected and moisturized. You're an inspiring person, particularly with your protective styles and yarn braid tutorials! Keep motivating! Thanks! :D

  • @ltcartwright1976

Hi there! Thank you so much! Yes, diet is key, and I strive to eat healthy. Some days are easier than others! If only it took putting stuff ON hair - my hair would be down my back! LOL!

  • Love the info and encouragement! You know I can relate. Great video and stay encouraged sis.

  • @dpayton30

Hey lady! Thank you so much. I know, there are a lot of us slow growers out there!

  • Great video I've worn my hair in its natural condition for a number of years, I love that YT and other internet sites are there with information on how to maintain hair. Understanding what my own hair is capable of and how to care for it, knowing what works for me has been my only concern, for budget reasons I thankful that I've not become a product junkie and thankful for you for sharing your knowledge stay blessed

  • @meadowarch

Thank you! Yes, I have had to learn that is doesn't take a whole lot to take care of your hair. I am in the process of giving away and using up much of the products that I have. My goal is to have one shelf with products.

And, yes, no one can claim ignorance about their hair - the internet has a wealth of information and it has taught me so much.

  • Your Gheri-Curl was fierce!! I had one too. I remember being jealous (a lil bit) of people with fabulous gheri curls back in the day...lol

    Great tips!

  • @StormyHair

GIRL! Do you know that I LOVED my curl?! I had such a big-head back then. I was 18 in that picture and you couldn't tell me my hair didn't look good! As I got older, the curls got better because I was able to convince my hair stylist to use bigger rods. Remember how they would use those tiny rods? That was part of why many had these stringy looking curls.

A few months ago, I actually entertained the thought of getting a curl!

  • Great video! Fast growth when I was younger. Thought I had become a slow grower until I added weekly protein treatments (outer) and raw beets to my diet (inner). Turned out to be retention issue. However, until I knew what the problem was I naturally found the other tips in the video. And I still don't length check.

  • @trini467

Huh. What is in beets that have helped with your hair growth? I use to juice beets all the time; maybe I need to revisit this! I am glad you remedied your problem because slow growing hair is not fun!

  • (2) Again, I told myself off because I was concentrating too much on wht others were doing with their hair, instead of my own. I love how far you have come in your journey since ayurvedic days when you didn't talk to the camera! when you started talking I was so pleased and still am, great vid I enjoyed the pics esp the jehri curl pic too :)

  • really enjoyed this vid, thank you. It is so nice to see a different perspective on hair growth. I don't length check either, I feel like I need to focus more on the overall health of my hair and the growth will follow. I used to get the tape measure out EVERYTIME i was in my hair and lo and behold, my hair didn't grow much since the day before when I checked it lol! I had to nip in tht obsession! I still admire other ladies hair too, esp the lush moisturised manes.

  • @TheNaprika

Thanks, girl! You are right - length checks do become an obsession and is so discouraging because your hair ain't growing that fast...especially when you check it every day! LOL! Yes, the key is concentrating on your hair and less on what others are doing.

I was just thinking today about my speaking on vids and how at one point I NEVER did. I have made progress, not just in terms of hair but in my comfort with videos and talking to people. It is an effort, though! :-)

  • Excellent video!

  • @NaturalDiva10

    Thank you!

  • I feel You NnF, I have thin slow growing hair as well, and I needed this Video. Thank You Hon...

  • @ConnectedToMeNow

Awwww! I am glad it helped!

  • @aprilrain2606

Yes, that is another great tip! Thanks for watching and sharing!

  • Great video. I can relate to everything you said :-). I did length checks early on, and it was disheartening. BTW I have the same look in my baby picture :-). I just have one, and all I have is a little patch on the top :-).

  • @TheNaturalmystery

    Thank you!

Oh no! You have that same baby pic?! LOL! Today, I told my mom that I almost uploaded it with the vid and she commented, "You would get a lot of views then!" I laughed and told her, "Yeah, people would be cracking up and telling others about it!"

  • Cute photos! You have not changed or aged!

I also know the boundaries of my hair. It will grow but is very spongy and does not show it's length. Because of it's texture, applying heat only makes it stringy! I can get some stretch using the tension method but I don't want to use heat too often. Oh well . . . I enjoy watching other people style their hair but realistically know what my hair will and will not do. Acceptance.

  • @thecreativelady

Hi 'Lady! Thanks! I like how you say that. It IS knowing the boundaries of your hair and accepting it for all that it does...the good, the bad, and the ugly.

  • Your hair is beautiful. I too have always had thin hair, bald on both sides lol, But my hair grew fast. NOW, since i have gotten older my hair grows soooooooo slowwwww. I thank God is has gotten thcker since going natural.

  • @teddygirl52

    Thank you!

Yes, this is me - my hair grows sooooo slowwwww, too. This sums it up quite nicely! :-)

  • preach sister! great video.

  • @adassa

    LOL! Thank you!

  • You are so right on so many points. I guess I am the type that don't jump on all the bandwagons, but make decisions based on my beliefs and economics. I enjoy watching the styling videos, but was very reluctant to go out and buy all of those products. It can be overwhelming. Find something that works and stick to that. And the lengths checks are like jumping on the scale. DON'T DO IT! Thanks for the video.

  • @jellovette

I have only jumped on a few bandwagons: the indian powders (love it!) and the steamer (eh). Now, I am like you, belief (an understanding about my hair) and the fact that I need money for more important things (like school, a car and a new laptop!). Having lots products can be overwhelming and I am in awe of those youtubers who buy and use a lot.

I love the analogy of the scale. That's exactly what length checks are like!

  • I can definitely relate to the hair envy and length checks issues. I did length checks every month at the beginning of my journey for a year, compared it to other youtubers which sort of depressed me since my hair didn't look and grow as fast as others. I no longer focus on length checks and really focus on how to take care of my hair. I appreciate your perspective on this topic!

  • @MyBlueSkiez

How much hair growth did you see month to month? I bet comparing month one to month 12 shows an amazing amount of growth!

Yes, I am with you! I focus more on ways to keep my hair on my head! Hair care is the most important thing if you want to see growth.
