Very interesting reconstruction. Where did you get all the stills of this lost episode? Why are there so many stills of an episode that was erased? One more question - how is it that the BBC still has the audio tracks of these episodes but not the video? Weren't they integrated onto the same tape?
@AnaiBendai The stills that exist are 'telesnaps' done by John Cura who was hired to take photographs of the episode during transmission. So these are actual pictures from the episode itself and about 70 were made per episode. 36 missing episodes have no telesnaps however.
The audio only survives because it was recorded on transmission, by fans as a way of keeping the programme for themselves. Fortunately fan audio recordings survive for ALL the missing episodes but the quality is variable.
I don't get it -- BBC wiped these episodes one year after their premiere. Who does such a thing to wipe out tapes so close in time? Haven't they heard of "reruns"?
@longhairfan Actually the story WAS repeated 06/08/68 to 06/22/68 and again 07/13/68 to 08/03/68 after which it was THEN wiped. Part of the reason was the BBC had gone to color and viewed B&W episodes as nonviable. Also Terry Nation (the Dalek's creator) had been trying since 1966 to get a Dalek TV series going but part of the agreement to do was the BBC had to to stop the sale of Dalek episodes overseas. These two things coming together resulted in the wiping
This recon is terrific fun! It captures the spirit of the segment and era wonderfully! What matter it looks cheap and cheerful, it's the fun and imagination that counts! And in many ways, these are similar to the pictures we would have had back in the day! Great fun recon, hugely entertaining, very well done, thanks!
Yeaaaahhh Max Payne Style Graphic Novel....now that would be great for Doctor who except its a Doctor Who Graphic Novel using the sound from the old episodes
i still don't understand: how can they LOSE and episode? do they carry a big pile of them around the world and occassionly drop one? lol. kinda stupid thing to do.
In the 1970s, once Dr Who appeared in colour, the BBC thought the old black and white episodes worthless, and so destroyed them. Now, however, the tables have turned, and the BBC want the episodes back - Many of them have come back, having been rescued by visitors to the BBC Film archive in the 70s.
Not quite. All the colour episode exist in some form, but many from the eary 70's have had to be reconstructed from other sources and about a dozen are still missing the colour.
He's Correct Y'Know. Back then, around '76 when most B&W Film was being wiped and sold, they didn't realise the full implications of what they (BBC Archives) were doing, and they thought they were useless as they were only commisioned for 1 repeat since original broadcast on the BBC.
I have had some issures of "Doctor Who Magazine" that would have photos of various episods which some of this could have come from. Also, there is that episode that is still intact which I saw on vhs.
I saw one of the episodes that was on a vhs that was about history of the Daleks. I checked out from my local libary in 2004, but now the library does not have it anymore.
And in case you're forgetting the exact start date of EOTD was given in the closing cliffhanger scene at the end of previous story: July the 20th, 1966.
It was broadcast in May 1967 so, yeah, the Doctor did travel in time, nearly one year into the past!
we will have to see how the cyberman invasion story turns out, they animated it and used the orignal soundtrack. hopefully most of the lost episodes can be `remade`
Hey, I'm a massive New Who fan, so I'm a bit bewildered from the whole recon business - is this not the actual episode at all? Or did you use a mix of the old and new episode???
Many Doctor Who episodes were wiped during the late 1960s. Very few episodes from the Troughton era survive, (William Hartnell lost lots too).
In the case of Evil of the Daleks, only episode 2 survives in full. But MOST of the stories have an intact soundtrack, and some clips from off-screen recordings. This is a mighty-fine reconsturction..
ive been wantn to see this peisode bad. by the way i have complete sets of tom baker and a few other doctors if anyones interested in buying, must live in america message sheik
This is quite the amazing recon. It was a bit funny - toward the end the fancy old car was driving and it drove past a modern SUV. :) I suppose you've used clips of other things, then.
wow... you've gotten some good compliments, well while I don't think your the next coming of christ as metelcloud does I appriciate your hard work even when it's abit over the top at times.
This is absolutely extraoridnary recon. You should do this professionally! (if you don't already.) thankyou very much for this post. it's as if the episode was recovered.
Sooooo much better than Loose Canon. I love this serial and so I can't wait to watch what you've done with the rest of this episode! I hope you'll think about uploading it as an avi for download somewhere too. Fantastic work. ^__^

@longhairfan What's funny is that this story was repeated in 1968 after season 5, the only 60s story for that to happen.
But most of the time it just didn't happen.

Great Idea, Some of us either weren't born yet or were too little for this kind of thing back when this first aired.
For those of us without a TARDIS of our own to go back and see it, this is a great alternative LOL!

They were erased by the BBC in the mid 70's, back when repeats were rare and there was no VHS, it was considered unnecessary to keep hold of them.
