  • The best performance by far on youtube ... You feel waves of sound and there is really beautiful harmony between womens and mens voices. And the moment of culmination is something what words can hardly dicsribe ...

  • I care not for barely noticeable shifts. Music isn't about being up and down and to the point, if it were it would be bland and boring. This version transcends any other on youtube, thank you very much.

  • Drop in tone was in the first 20 secs largely, but beautifully emotive rendition, much better understanding of Slavonic choral music then a lot of Western choirs who sing this.

  • One of the best performance ever!

  • Really awesome music!

  • Droga wykonawcza ok.

Brakuje ściemnienia barwy, głębszego piano, cerkiewnych legendarnych już dziś basów, modlitewnego nastroju. Może wina sprzętu rejestrującego.

Ogólnie in plus. Tak się tylko czepiam. Mieli szansę na platonowski ideał..

  • Your piece is just awesome , we brought this to Vienna last month but ... this is made for you , we just can try.. a matter of soul

    Thanks for posting

it is so great that we share this kind of music

    Holger from Berlin

  • Thank you, thank you, thank you for giving this song the pace and emotion it deserves.

  • i'm having this at my wedding!!!!

  • I used to sing this when I still was in a choir, and since this song, I never loved singing anything else this much!!!

  • Beautiful, the choir sounds very clear, and I love the slower tempo. It emphasizes the culmination, it's lovely sung.

Prekrasno, svaka čast. Regards from Croatia.

  • Beautiful.

  • A ja się zgadzam z drheti - cenne uwagi

  • I always cry when i hear this. I do so love the Holy Virgin.... wonderful

  • Bravo! This rendition is absolutely beautiful and dripping with empathy and love. The tenor and bass voices were very steady and brought a certain gravitas.

  • Indeed, it is a great performance, one of the best I have ever heard.

  • That was rather close to perfect. It's a pity the camera did not cover the real impression of the fff bit.

  • russian`s song, yup. but te choir is polish.

  • We did this in my choir class last year and it was a very lovely song to sing. I loved this song....and they are a Russian choir.

  • Sunshine - Warsow is in Poland.

    This is a polish choir.

  • alrighty then...

  • To be exact, Warsaw is in Poland. Warsow is actually sth connected with a computer game ^^

And when it comes to the choir, they're smashing.

  • obviously Bogorodice Dzjewo is how one says it in Polish..if you look at the link from which it was taken, it's a POLISH choir...

  • fail :) it`s Bogorodice Djevo and in polish: Bogurodzica dziewica :)

  • Beautiful.

  • Bildschön... Das ist ein sehr-sehr schön Gesangstück. Ein gute Chor. Wunderbar!

  • super :-)

  • It is Bogoroditse Devo, isn't it?

    NOT BOGORODICE DZJEWO

  • It's also a transliteration, which is bound to differ a little bit.

  • Technically there is no "correct" way to write a transliteration as it is just an American attempt to duplicate the pronunciation.

Personally I would write it "Bogoroditse Dzjevo" as I think that's pretty close to the Russian pronunciation... but don't quote me on that :D

  • so beautiful

  • The chamber choir at NUI Maynooth performed this at christmas and i nearly cried. Its so powerful! I think this, Barbers Agnes Dei and the adag from Mahlers 5th are the only pieces that inspire so much feeling in me. Theyre so beautiful...theres so many moments of tension that are released so beautifully. 1min55 and onwards make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up!! Thank u for such a lovely recording :)

  • The only problem with this piece is that it goes flat, and that can be easily represented by scrolling to 1:18 and then scrolling to the beginning. The choir starts going flat about 11 seconds in. It's a lovely piece though, and it was undoubtedly an incredible experience to sing it in that church, I'm sure.

The tempo is a fracture too slow I think, but I appreciate the prayerful quality with which the piece is being sung and the confidence. That makes up for any other inconsistencies. :)

  • I really enjoy this piece at a slower pace. More time to take this piece of music in eh?

  • I like it when it's sung slowly, but I think that the movement on the "ah" vowel is a lot more striking when it has a bit more movement in it. Now that I listen again, I think that the problem might be that there isn't enough of an arc in the sound, and perhaps it's too metric, therefore it has a slightly sluggish quality. It's beautiful nonetheless.

  • I'm a choral singer, and I agree with you completely about the 'arc of sound', The whole thing should sound organic- from the soul.

  • i have seen many choirs do this song. I think this is perhaps one of the most perfect rendition of this piece. Dynamics is on the dot perfect. Filled with enough emotions that speaks of.. a prayer.

  • Kocham to:)

  • masterpiece...

I still remember the time we sang it. It touches me every time I hear it.

    RIP Sergei

  • This is one of the few songs that I have actually shed tears for out of appreciation for the sheer beauty of it. Simply amazing...if only I could hear this live somewhere.

  • The beautiful music .....it strucks me.

  • Hi!

Thank you for sharing such a beautiful video. This piece - Vespers - is one of my favorite sacred works.

Could you please define for me "Bogorodice Dzjewo." I've heard different names to this particular section of the Vespers and I would like to know what is meant by the name given here. Thank you:0)

  • This is Russian Orthodox version of the "Hail Mary" prayer. Check out Wikipedia for more details on this version.

  • @shysterlicious

Bogorodice means woman who give birth to God, and Dzjewo means Virgin

  • I am from Serbia and this song is in serbian its beautiful i am first year in music high school and we sing it almost every day whit full choir. The original composer is Stevan K. Hristic

  • So you think Great Rachmaninov stole it from some Hristic? And besides, i am russian, and alll the words are in Cerkovno-Sloviansky, which is old russian. It might be very close to serbian, but its not serbian.

  • cerkovnoslavianskij is not the old russian, but the old state language of Rus and Old Russia later. It is a language of Greek Slavs of Solun (Thessalonike)

  • so this is old Russian as well, but you didnt get the point as this is not what i was talking about.

  • cerkovnoslavianskij is a south slavic language, but Russian is a east slavic language. So it can be an old Russian. It is only a state language of Old Russia.

  • whatever, this is not what i meant anyway

  • brings me to tears every time..

  • The tempo is too slow for me, but you manage to fill the form with sound! The shaping of "radyisja" and "Marie" at the beginning is stunning! The entrance of the bases gives so much depth - this is my favorite recording of the song on the YouTube! Well done!

  • maybe I'm wrong but it sounds like second sporano was sung by tenor ^^

but maybe it's not truth ;)

this piece of music is beautiful!

and choir is also grate :)

  • There are a few parts where the tenor sings the same as the soprano

  • They sound like they're breathing through their ears! Their phrasing is amazing and the only complaint I have is that this sopranos could've been a little more piano at the beginning of measure 14 (1:25) and on until about measure 23 (1:59) because the altos have the melody. They also get pretty flat by the end, but all things considered, they did a great job! Our choir is performing this for our "Romantic" concert in the winter and I'm really excited about it!

  • I totally agree with your comment regarding the sopranos.. That section is really the part for the altos to shine but the sopranos drowned them out.. good observation...

  • I agree, the Robert Shaw Festival Singers CD of the Vespers is superb.

  • I'm sorry, but I totally disagree... The Robert Shaw festival singers are very good, but they don't have the "russian & orthodox" spirit... technically it's quite perfect of course... I do prefer the recording of the St-Petersburg Chamber Choir! The spirit is there, the voices are just perfect and a special award for the low basses... amazing colour and "homogeneity" incredible fall to the low Bflat at the end of N.5... just listen to it and enjoy it!!

  • This is the best version on youtube. There is an even better version on cd sung in France with Robert Shaw and the Robert Shaw Singers (Telarc CD) The technical abiltity of this version is to be heard to be believed.

  • This was sung in... Poland?

My High School choir did this some time ago, and the version here sounds astounding. It makes me want to cry myself to sleep when I think of how badly my choir did it.

  • I sing in High school in Poland and in My opinion our choir makes it better...

  • I find it hard to believe that any high school choir, no matter how talented, would have the emotional maturity, the vocal maturity, the sensitivity, the stylistic knowledge, and the musicality to perform this piece better than these singers did. Take this opportunity to learn from people who are older and have more experience than you.

  • This is my favorite piece of music of any genre, any artist, any composer, anything that has put two notes together and is called "on purpose."

  • As a matter of fact they started to flat in the first bar- but I don't care! It is a beautiful performance. Most important it is sung in the Russian church style including sliding into the pitch from below (this invites flatting) It has Slavic style and and does not sound like another English cathedral choir as it shouldn't. Love it.

  • For me this is the right tempo. Congratulations for a breath support. Probably best performance I've ever heard.

  • ohhmyygooddd. i have tears in my eyes.

  • O tak, doskonale! Naprawdę bardzo dobre wykonanie!

  • For the most part, very nice job. However, the key dropped significantly due to intonation and lack of breath support...or perhaps the tempo was too slow. Around 40 second into the performance you notice change in key and it continued around 1 min and 30 sec.

  • @conductor78 If you listen to the beginning and jump to the end, you'll notice that the drop was not that significant, I would say not even half a note. What bothered me instead was that they seem to go on forever and don't stop to take a breath. I get the feeling that I'm out of air because they don't take any. weird feeling.

  • wow.

wuddup w/ the heck of lower key??

poor bases who have to sing those Gs...

    :/

  • Absolutely beautiful. My choir (ECU Chamber Singers) is doing the full Vigil tomorrow. This is my favorite movement and I LOVE the tempo of this performance. It really shows off the sonorities and aching melodies. GREAT JOB!

  • Very nice interpretation. Love this song, just beautiful.

  • Beautifully done - does anyone know if a recording is available?

  • This piece has to be one of my most favorite pieces ever! Very well executed. Absolutely beautiful. Choir....wonderful job!

  • The Climax Gives me goosebumps everytime i hear it! And i've been listening to this piece for ages!

  • This gives me the shivers, it's so beautiful.

  • Very nice!! Regards from Serbia

  • Wonderful ..... Rachmaninov is one of greatest composers in the world ..... A lot of compliments from Italy ....

  • SUPER.

  • Wow!

  • amazing performance. it really "pulls" as they say. i only wish the recording were better. i couldn't hear enough bass, but i'm sure it was there in the performance. aces.

  • The most wonderful hymn to Maria I've ever heard. Rachmaninov is great.

  • My favorite Ave Maria by far. Although not my favourite vocal peice by Sergei. Mine would have to be Vespers. I think it was a bit slow on climax, but the musicality was wonderful. Salamu Alaykum.

  • Breathtaking!

  • lent, majestueux: belle interprétation !

  • I sang this song too with my choir, and I can assure everbody, it is not easy !! But this choir does it very well, very clear and crispy sound. There are more versions on Y-Tube, but I think this is the best.

  • do not be surprised - it's one of the best choirs in Poland

but I also recommend you: chór sgh :)

  • Apparently it does show !! I am glad I can trust my ears....

  • also: chor uniwersytetu medycznego w bialymstoku :)

  • jednolita barwa, cudowne brzmienie, czysto... przeszły mnie ciarki...

  • we have to sing this song in choir it is so hard but a lovely song and on the 13th december we are singing it in the chrch

  • The slowness of it makes it so personal and beautiful. The space of the church they're in makes the sound really come out. You can tell it was meant to be sung in a church. Simply beautiful. It brings you to the verge of tears. The ending really stamps a close to this beautiful prayer.

  • I really do agree. Every other version I've heard is sped up, which is okay, but doesn't bring out the full potential of the piece. This was done beautifully and I can only wish to have been there to experience it live. As a person who has sang the piece, I can fully appreciate the level of hard work it took. Fantastic work.

  • amazing.. I lone Rachmaninov and Bohorodice

  • So grand - I love the interpretation.

  • Thank You for posting this. It is a wonderful performance. Bravo!!!

  • I've been waiting for months for someone to post music from The Vespers. Thank you very much.

  • Wonderful sense of line, color, & ensemble. I love this anthem from the "Vespers" and you do it beautifully!
