If Glass Steagal Act which prohibited a bank from offering investment, commercial banking, and insurance services hasn't been repealed then the "sub prime bust" might not be as damaging IMO.

Given a bunch of toxic assets, mandated by Frank and Dodd and others during the Clinton administration, the banks started playing "hot potato" and passing these bundled up "assets" on.
