  • They would have to do this outside a KFC... How profound...

  • see this is an paper thin issue because i can understand both sides on one hand you have the brotha who never got the chances and ended up workin odd in to keep above water then you have the few how get the help and inspiration to go to college its a thin line but one thing is for sure theirs more people of color suffering than doing good so in this life its either be the bad guy for trying or struggle with everyone else me i perfer the middle to do enough to be ok and still be wit my people

  • Great scene.

  • @smoothcollected duude yea... nigger@smoothcollected dude yea really. This gives niggers that rep. they don't like! What a moronic conversation, with a punch line that only nuggets thought "hit"... The other day some guy was talking '2pac was the realist nigga' ....here is a actual lyric from that "nigga" 'la la la Laaaa la la la la all you niggers die' how fuckin more dumb can you people get? Should blame themselves for slavery too, sick of hearing that shit! You allowed yourselves to b

  • DwayneCussinq !

  • ATL

  • Like a fuckin BITCH!!!........... lmao

  • @shawn415 lol "who you callin a bitch? bitch"

  • Great movie. This type of genius will never ever be duplicated. Espesially in todays washed up movie making.

  • I don't think the point was that by bettering themselves, they were acting white. The point was that an education wasn't going to buy their way out of racism. They would still have to struggle and be viewed as 'niggas' by society. A lot of college students do look down on the 'locals' by the way...

  • Oh man, Larry Fishburne comes too correct in this movie. Love love love it.

  • @ddsharper

no dumb ass, a black man wrote it.

  • As talented as these two are, this is the only movie Samuel L Jackson & Lawrence Fishburn were in together.

  • He said Ready for the world is talking shit lmaooooooooooooo *faints*

  • "You are not 'niggas!'" "Free your mind and your ass will follow."

  • European slave traders called the Africans they kidnapped for involuntary servitude in America "Negros." It eventually became the slur "niggas." Well, as of June 19, 1863, there aren't anymore "niggas!" Have a happy Juneteenth!

  • @variablast We are not all "niggers!" The word "niggers" is a slur of the word "Negro." During US Slavery, the slavemaster called the slave Negro in slurred form "nigger." We are not all "niggers." Quit trying to justify using that word. Learn the origin and the meaning of the word before you use it.

  • @pmjhns "Niger" in Latin means black.

  • @Yieiuu I'm familiar with the Latin word "niger." "Negro" is Spanish for "black," also. "Niger" is pronounced "NI-JER." "Negro," the Spanish word is pronounced Americanized, "NEE-GROW." After habitual usage, it was slurred into the word "nigger" by the slavemasters of the Transatlantic Slave Trade. There are no more slavemasters or slaves, so there is no reason to use the word. Female Negros were called "Nigresses," slurred into "nigras," which has become obsolete.

  • @pmjhns

Alot of people don't know that. But for those who do know the difference and what these terms meant.Really shows alot about words in general and how they can be changed by terms of location.

This is probably one of the deepest scenes.

Because he says they are not N***as.Which they aren't that was a term told to people in this case African slaves, saying they were less than people they were crap and that was all they would ever be.

Only if people today would learn the history of words.

  • ready for the curl lmao! a reference to the group ready for the world a popular group at the time

  • The funny thing is there are "STILL" people like this in 2011!!!

Mad at the world thinking it owes them something. It's pointless trying to hate on someone who's taking steps to do better. It's a shame how some blacks will just roll over and accept them worst in life and look down on those who want better.

You can never be a sell out when your taking advantage of what so many have died for us to have.

  • lmaoo o"who you calling a bitch, bitch" 1:13

  • @amissallday well if the she fits

  • love the message in the last part. Your NOT niggers/niggazs!!! I want all my black people to understand that!

  • "Remember to never sell out, you can prevail, just never forget where you come from" This statement has the right idea, right? but you don't know where you come from :-/, so what are u identifying with? Your ghetto? if u ask me its just keeping the slave mentality going..Right spirit, no substance, thats what we lack in our fights.

  • @BillieJTV and this is why I call myself an African American. My identity is not going to be reduced to just "black". Yes my ancestors were slaves...but they DID come from Africa. That is a part of my heritage that I will never let go. I AM AFRICAN American!!!. But my homeland is America.

  • when lawrence say wake up at the end was my part I loved attending an HBCU we as black are some hardworking people because at the HBCU i attended we were busting our a##es no lie and our professors wasnt passing us for a check... CSU ohio..

  • 1:11 my favorite part

  • READY FOR THE WORLD POPPIN SHIT!!!!!!

  • i love the part when he be like"like a fuckin bitch" lol2 funny!!

  • @reremy1steez lmao i thought i was the only person who would bust out laughin' at that

  • @779LR I AGREE THAT PERSON SAID THAT THE FUNNIEST!...BUWAHAHAAA.

  • That 'who you callin a bitch, bitch' part is just epic

  • Comment removed

  • I attended a HBCU. The tension in this movie displayed between the college students and what we called the "locals" was real.

  • @killerbees2K6 You're right. The locals(DC) were cool once some of us got to know them and they found out that a lot of us came from the same kind of neighborhoods back home. Problem was that a lot of the (upper middle-class)students didn't want anything to do with the community. They actually felt good that the locals were having problems.

  • @killerbees2K6 I feel you actually when i was attending an HBCU i was the opposite.... i was the uppity one until my friend and the real kncked me down to real life they was so real with me that i wanted to go home but i stay learned alot educational and real world experience and now i am well educated and i am conscious of what and how i approach people

  • who you callin a bitch bitch

  • like auhhh bitch.. who u callin a bitch, bitch....

  • "You're NOT Niggas!" thank you Lawrence Fisburn *smiling and applauding*. I love this scene. We are not so called "niggas"

  • The chemistry between Samuel and Laurence is just outstanding. One of my favorite Spike Lee films ever.

  • @jmj540 one of my favorite films, and one of my favorite scenes as well. i must confess, however, that seeing this film made me aware of a never ending struggleof which i wish i could be oblivious. There is a chasm between black and non black, and there is a chasm between dark skinned blacks and non dark skinned blacks, but it seems that there is no solution for the problem. so there is this heartbreaking knowledge with no remedy.

  • READY FOR THE WORLD POPPIN SHIT LOL!!!!

  • Niggers are beasts.

  • I hear many people of all colors refer to each other as "my nigga" when traveling to work on the subway, and on the streets of NYC, and it still makes me cringe regardless of their ethnicity or knowing that they are not referring to me, .. . but I think a visit to the Civil Rights Museum in NC or the basement exhibits in the Blacks in Wax museum in Baltimore should be on everyone's "To Do" list!

  • I generally see where Fishburn's character is coming from but I think people like him need to be careful not to try to put Blackness in a box. Blacks have the right to choose their hairstyles. If some want to wear weaves or jheri curls, which I don't care for myself(too smelly)then that's their choice. If Blacks want to wear natural styles again that's their choice. Let's allow Blacks to chose their own way of being Black instead of applying some script to Blackness.

  • @CrowdPleeza I agree, but this is way bigger than hairstyles, I think. It's about self-esteem or really the lack of it. Fishburn's comment was meant to make Jackson and his friend see the glaring contradiction of their accusing educated blacks of "trying to be white" even as they were putting damaging chemicals in their own hair to smooth out its natural curl. Jackson and friends are so full of resentment and (self) loathing they don't even see it.

  • @TheCatgirl6 i sometimes looked in wonderment at other blacks who i felt were adjusting their appearance to fit more mainstream standards, and yet,if you really think about it, we live in a world that is very hostile toward individuals who do not fit a certain visual standard. perhaps black people are the harshest at holding each other to an established standard of beauty. so how can i be angry with a woman who gets hair extensions, plastic surgery etc. truthfully, we all want to feel acceptance

  • @CrowdPleeza i think lawrenceis saying their talking about how their not black enough but is trying to change themselves by wearing a curl

  • @CrowdPleeza I think the point that he was trying to make was that they were trying to alter their look from what is naturally black. So they needed to take a look at themselves before they questioned HIS "blackness".

  • Preach

  • They had skinnies in the 80's ew

  • @FragileActtz Where you think this skinny jean style come from? lol.. Its not like these dudes just made it up.. All recycled from the 80s, just like the shoes

  • "Does Marsellus Wallace look like a BITCH?!?

  • who you callin a bitch? Bitch i laughed so hard when i heard that idk why

  • @twistoffate111 me too, that was too funny...

  • interesting dichotomy between locals & college kids. happens all the time. reality is the locals shouldn't blame the college kids 4 going away from home 2 get an education ... that's what u r supposed to do. instead, the locals should b angry @ (1) their own parents, who didn't stress the necessity of education n an information economy, (2) a system that uses poverty as a barrier 2 training 4 marketable skills, & (3) a country that doesn't pay a livable wage 2 everyone.

  • @evethezealot

A living wage isn't a cure all. How well a person can benefit from a living wage can depend on their knowledge of financial management and how many mouths they have to feed and clothed. A living wage won't do you no good if you're wasting that extra money on rims you don't need or have too many kids you can't afford.

  • @evethezealot I agree and I would add that the locals should also take a good long look in the mirror. They absolutely were not helped by parents who didn't properly guide them, especially where education is concerned. But they are not taking responsibility for their own short-sightedness, laziness and mistakes. Exactly where were they during their own school years? Why didn't they study? Why didn't they try harder? Why aren't they trying now? It's never too late to better yourself.

  • Is that morpheus?

  • @GerudoUK omg i can't believe you only know him as morpheus.

  • Lol @"ready for the world talkin shit"

  • For the most a vast % of black males are trapped in this world of niggerazation.

The whole behavior of thuggism is some twisted slave type mentally.

Black america does not really understand the double conscious breakdown

that W. E. Dubois broke ground on.

If a vast % of these thugs in the hood could be isolated so they could be

    showned all the info.

This ignorant spell of thuggery could die out for good.

  • ever wonder why "black" people have identity problems? to things:willie lynch, and the curses.

  • @e69alpha

There was no Willie Lynch. He didn't really exist. We need to stop blaming this imaginary white slavemaster for our problems.

  • "And then come out in public with a shower cap on ya head! Look like a fuckn bitch...who u calln a bitch, bitch?!!" LMFAO!!

  • Coming out in public with an shower cap on! Yeah, Like a Bitch! Who U Calling A Bitch Bitch Lmao

  • they were niggers ..........lol

  • Spike Lee is brilliant!

  • I loved this movie because it was so relevant to me at the time attending a historically black university. Go Hampton! I lived the tension between locals and college kids. I see this scene as the class struggle and educational divide between lower and middle class blacks which is still present today. When Sam Jackson says the line "Y'all think your white" this rang so true because middle class blacks and middle class whites have more inline and aligned than lower class blacks. Good Movie.

  • I love this movie!

  • Great scene but.....shower caps in public?

    XD XD XD XD

Great scene. The mentality that a black person is perceived as 'white' by bettering themselves is rampant. And the killer part is that people don't see implied disrespectful view they have of the race when they say it to someone that they view as a sellout. Priceless.

  • I was there with you until the end. It's FULLY true that we're wack when we say "smart = white." That doesn't mean that smart black people (condoleezza, clarence thomas) can't be sellouts though.

  • @stillirise83 Yeah, and that shit still happens. Some people have the 'balls' to say things to me, from moving vehicles, because my pants fit and I don't walk with one fast leg/one slow leg.

  • it is a funny scene, but you can really see the seriouness in fishburn's eyes when he said you are not niggaz

  • that was powerful....it leaves you with something to think about.

  • classic samuel l. jackson. I don't think he's ever played a role that isn't like that.

And yes, I love the tension in the scene. This is very true. We are not niggas.

  • "Yall niggaz! And ya gon' be niggaz FOREVER, just like us!! Niggaz!" LOL! Damn. Samuel L. Jackson's character's view of the world was less than bleek. All jokes aside, this was the most significant scene in the whole movie. The conscious brothers step off campus & are labeled as wanna-be's just b/c they are trying to better themselves by obtaining a college education, which shows the complexity of Blk ppl's identity problem. Heavy stuff here. This still may be Spike's most introspective film.

  • @TheThirdEyeCeesU Great synopsis. This is my favorite Spike movie. My father showed me this movie when I was like 8 or 9. College was never an if but a when in my family, but after I saw this movie it was a done deal. I wanted to be like Dap! Best scene in the movie. I like the wake up scene, too. Didn't get it for like 15 years but still very poignant. Good post.

  • @TheThirdEyeCeesU It is tru that Black ppl who have more money& who R better educated act like they're better than the rest of us. So i'm not made @ samuel ( his role) 4 standing up 4 himself & letting them know he's not dirt& breath the same air as them.Which I think is a common problem in our communities. The way they were passing judgement on em with the showercap. That's Y alot of blacks act like "niggas".Bcs we treat each other like niggaz.

  • @aom22ful Idk if you've seen this movie or not, but at the start of this scene what happened was they simply walked into a restaurant and began to eat. They didn't say anything to Samuel's character. Samuel started talkin' about them and judging them and they didn't even say anything to him. They were just eatin' and Samuel's character was the one that came up 2 em judging them 1st

  • Self identity will forever be complex with our people..No how we try to find a place in this land we will never be identified as we still in the land of our captivity. whats the missing link? We are not Johnsons, Smiths, Thompsons, Where did our true identity go? And who took it from us? Who is still hiding it? The answer to these questions will make our reality more prevalent.

  • @TheThirdEyeCeesU

    Amen. I completely agree.

  • @TheThirdEyeCeesU Deepest part of the movie. I think it goes on in all races.

  • oh snap! thats Samuel Jackson! love it!

  • "nigga"is a mentality.we are gods and we need to snap out of "nigga mentality." well alot of us need to snap out of it.deres alot of gods dat rise above dis.NiggasVsGods

  • Great scene with future legends of the theatrical world: Lawrence Fishburne & Samuel L. Jackson - not to mention Jazz legend Branford Marsalis.

  • One of the best parts of the movie."You are not niggaz".
